I don't know what the hell it's called so bare with me.
It's like a traveling shimmy but not just walking and shimmying.
It's like floating and shimmy....ing.
Any one know what I'm talking about or how to do it?

Are you talking about the one you do on your toes? The one I know that sounds like what you're describing involves keeping your knees rigid but your hips loose, while pumping your feet up and down really quickly. All while on your toes, lol.

It sounds more complicated than it is to do it. After watching a friend, I got the gist of the move in the first try. Just stand in front of a mirror and keep an eye on what your hips are doing while you practice.

yes, but also remember your not on your tippy toes. your on the balls under the toes. it gives you more leverage. just press into it and pop your hip up. do it slow at first then fasten the pace untill you get to where you want.

Would it be easier on a carpet or hard floor to start?

Your feet aren't going to hurt too much. For me, my thighs always burn a bit after I practice.

agreed. i practiced on hard flooring and it doesn't bother any. just the leverage you used on your knee bending.

Do you or do you not bend your knee's? o.O it depends. you know your knee's are bent in standard position. doing floating shimmies is no different. you just bend your knee's to how deep you want your shimmies to be. i may be wrong. but i go with that i see my teacher do. its like regular movement shimmy (step fully) but then when you step on your front heal, its pretty much the same. either your taking bigger strides or shorter strides. its alot easier to explain in person than in words. but i tried my best

My friend in South Florida taught me the hard way: stand on one foot (hold onto a barre, if you're in the studio, a dresser or table at home) and practice the shimmy on one foot. Then switch to the other foot. then try walking.
I also re-learned my hip movements by not using your legs but your glutes. This is Suhaila style and you can see her demonstrating her practice on youtube, (she's showing/teaching it to Ellen Degeneres), hmmm. I think it's under "Suhaila on Ellen" or some such thing. It made a difference on my legs since you stand and travel on your legs the extra strain is taken out.

Hrm, we do this in my belly dance class. We call it a running shimmy, we practice for it by running in place like football players lol. Its hard and hurts my feet a lot, but I think once she lets us refine it a bit (we do things to the extreme to learn them right, then refine it down to look normal) it should look great.
