The book is large but simply designed. The two covers crafted from thin wood held together by coiled metal. Carved on the front cover is a Japanese symbol meaning music. Two strips of printed silk are tied together to keep the journal closed.

Beside the book instead of a pen is a brush and a jar of ink.
