This hollow in one of the big trees in Granny’s territory is normally used as a small classroom. Tonight it will have to be a shelter for the storm instead. The opening can be covered with a frame of braided branches and this will hopefully be enough to keep the warmth in and the wind out.

Bumble sped from tree to tree, his wings weren't sufficient for long flights and the wind was pushing the little sentinel in directions he'd rather not go. He was alone, and the storm was getting worse and worse. He trembled, if not from fright but from the cool rain drops that soaked his feathers. He knew where he could go, he didn't stray too far from it before the storm started. The little classroom would be perfect.

He landed unceremoniously in a puddle of wet fledgling feathers. Bumble gave a small shake, scattering the drops all over. I'm not afraid of a little rain! he thought, putting on a brave front, but just then the Thunderbird clapped, and he ducked behind his wings. This wouldn't be fun.

Granny was still wet from the short flight from her big classroom to this one. She had hoped to be able to fly back and forth between the two and keep track of all of the fledglings during the storm, but she feared that her old wings would not allow another trip. Hopefully Osprey and Bumblebee would be all right and stay safe. The bigger classroom was not an ideal shelter, and she hoped they would have the sense to huddle together and not try to go outside.

She had brought Crawly here with the intent to try to move the other fledglings too, but the rapid onset of the storm had foiled her plans.

Bumble's arrival was a huge relief. That meant another young one was accounted for and safe from the storm.

"There, there," she said and preened the little wildtype gently. "I'll put the wind frame on and then we won't have to see the rain."

With a combined effort of beak and Will she managed to get the braided frame in place, shutting most of the wind out.

Crawly's entrance was far from graceful. His already weak flying had only been further dampened by the storm, and it took every last muscle in his body to make it to the small classroom. The ghost landed with a damp splat, flapping his wings slightly in a futile attempt to clear off some of the water, although ultimately it only resulted in spreading the water onto the other two. He grinned slightly at this result, before wobbling deeper into the driest spot of the classroom.

The fledgling had been slightly concerned about being trapped alone with the teacher, so the sight of Bumble was a relief…although he made sure not to show this with a series of grunts and complaints. He watched the two from the back, fluffing up in an attempt to keep his damp feathers away from his cooled body.

At least I escaped a lecture, Crawly's mind murmured. The ghost then began to snicker at the other fledgling as he was preened. Well this might just be fun after all.

Golden orbs swirled towards the entrance as he watched keenly as the old teacher mended the entrance. The storm seemed to be only getting worse, causing the fledgling to stir slightly. He couldn't help but to notice the concern upon everyone's face, and he knew from such worry that this wasn't normal.

At least they would be safe in here…

Bumble was relieved when he saw Granny arrive, he wouldn't have to take this storm alone in here. He shook off his feathers again, and accepted the preening, until he saw another fledgling watching the scene with delight. After Granny had stopped to go put up the frame, he put on his air of toughness, which included puffing out his feathery chest and narrowing his eyes. He shifted his feet, and felt as the wind died down inside the hollow, Granny had gotten the frame up!

Bumble walked on over to the frame, and peered through a small hole in the woodwork, checking out the storm. Still going strong.

"Bumble, is it?" Granny asked, without really needing to. She had a knack for learning names quickly and made a point to know both fledglings and their minders by name. "This handsome fellow in the corner is called Crawly. Have you two met before in the minders enclave?"

Finally satisfied with the frame's position Granny waddled over to the back of the classroom and fluffed up next to Crawly.

"Now dear boys," she said, "In a storm like this it's important to stay as warm and dry as possible, and that's why we'll sit close together in here. Come on over Bumble."

Crawly clicked his beak in sheer amusement. Perhaps this whole ordeal would be slightly more amusing than he first anticipated. His ear tuffs raised slightly in pride as the teacher complimented him, although only for a few moments before folding back into their general annoyed position.

At least the old fart's only blind in one eye, the young ghost mused to himself, grinning slightly at his twisted wit. He turned his head to face the wildtype, amused at his attempt to appear larger. Oh this is going to be fun.

"No," he responded, unamused by the antics to create a decent conversation. He could fix this.

"Yeah Bumble," he imitated, hissing slightly in mockery. "If you stand too close to the door, the thunderbird will take you." His tone shifted to a more serious baritone to intensify his next words. "I heard it takes you, chews you up, and feeds you to its chicks…like you are nothing more than a mere mus." He faked a shutter. "And it's angry tonight!" He flailed his wings…ignoring the limited space.

Bumble nodded his head at Granny's question, then swiveled his head to look at Crawly. "No, never met him before." he said, rustling his feathers in annoyance to his comments.
Careful Bumble don't let him get to you!

Without a word he wandered over to the very small huddle, thinking. Crawly was an annoying, little bug! ..a crawly one! He laughed, as if out of nowhere. "Yes, the Thunderbird IS hungry..." he mocked back, intending by his tone of voice and the way he stared at Crawly to turn the 'thunderbird's hunger' to the other fledgling.

Crawly's flailing wing brushed against Granny, and she gave him a stern stare. She wasn't hurt by the wing beat, but it wouldn't do for the chick to get his primaries damaged if he managed to hit the wall.

"Don't hurt yourself, little one." she said, and preened one of his eartufts a little too roughly. "It can be dangerous to flap too much inside."

Ah... Fledglings. Granny smiled at their bickering and boasting. Crawly usually demanded a lot of attention, and it was good that he got to spend some time with a fledgling that could stand up to him. Out of habit she started to turn their scare tactics into a lesson.

"The Thunderbird might sound strong and frightening," Granny said in her best storytelling voice, "But he will always give more than he takes."

She unfolded her wings just a bit, to give the fledglings room to scoot closer to her body and share her warmth.

"It's too easy to focus on what he might take," Granny said, "And you are both quite right – he can chew you up and spit you out as easy as that, but do you know what gifts he can bring?"

Crawly swayed in disappointment. He expected more from Bumble! At least the other fledgling seemed annoyed by his antics…it wasn't fear, however it was something to work with. A grin returned slightly, and the devilish mind went back to work. He'd have his fun, one way or another.

The little ghost hissed as he was preened, annoyed at his lack of choice in the matter, and resembling a wet feline. Braving the storm was looking better and better ever minute. Had he been less stubborn; he might have even considered the idea.

Here we go, Crawly rolled his eyes as the old teacher began the lesson. This is all his fault. he shot a nasty glare at Bumble.

"He can weed out the unfit," he droned, knowing very well that she shouldn't stop until he said something. At least it was slightly morbid. "And I heard he has a particular fondness for 'em Wildtypes…they taste better or something…"

Bumble mumbled under his breath at Crawly's comment, but he devised a come back, keeping his little fledgling voice calm. "Oh perhaps, but why spend time looking for one when ghosts are sooooo much easier to see in the woods!"

He huddled close to Granny and looked up at her. "Whats he bring?" He wouldn't act like this normally, when there were many fledglings about, but it was just he and the Crawly bug. He felt he could deal with the other, but he was metaphorically rubbing his feathers the wrong way.

"Not a bad answer," Granny said, and ignored Crawly's Wildtype comment, "The storm will weed out rotting and weak trees." She turned her head from one fledgling to the next. "And also those silly enough not to take shelter I suppose, no matter their type. It's not brave to fly in weather like this, and only those who have to perform some task or look out for wounded Sentinels will be out at all. I do not envy their task."

She fell silent and appeared to look at something far away, but she snapped out of it after a few heartbeats.

"Well then," she said cheerfully, "Back to those dead trees. Removing them makes the ground lighter in the spot the tree used to shadow. All that sunlight might sound frightening, but good things grow on the ground after a tree has fallen. Old rotting trees on the forest floor are great for gatherers."

The wind suddenly picks up, whistling threateningly through the holes in the braided frame that keeps it outside, and seems to make it start to bulge inwards. But this time, instead of impotently falling back after its fierce assault, the wind is boosted by a tremendous gust that tears the frame from the opening and hurls it right into the small huddle of Sentinels. There is no time to escape, as the windbreaker does not really have far to fly.

Oh that fledgling was soooo dead. Crawly huffed at his comment, raising his dark eartuffs in an aggressive stance. Good, the least I don't have to look at them, his mind hissed, and he opened his beak to ramble on how ghosts were superior, and wild pointless theories on how they would one day rule the forest, when he was cut off by the Teacher.

"Does the thunderbird like sacrifices?" The ghost mused to himself, giving a motioning look towards the other fledgling. He was considering carrying out such acts, when a large crack distracted him from his thoughts.

Pain. It was the first and last thing he remembered. Despite not taking the brunt of the door, the young ghost had been thrown to the wall. Grey feathers scattered everywhere, and much of his left wing primaries had been twisted far beyond saving. Warm blood dripped from scratches upon his head, pooling by his talons.
