ten points to gryffindor, it's sweeney todd. I'd like pointers on poses and rendering. I'm using Corel Painter Essentials, so unfortunately, any suggestions involving fancy brushes or technical bits will be hard to use, but any suggestions about technique would be fabulous. Also, the pose is meant to be threatening stance, and then fear and restraining child, and then an angry child trying to lunge out of restraints. I'm unsatisfied with how it looks now, and would love any help that could be given. Also, any help in areas I haven't directly mentioned would be appreciated too.

currently, it stands at this:

(i started off with dress folds in these progress shots, but the costume dress never has these, so i figured to get rid of them. any ideas about how to make the dress an interesting shape would be awesome)

I just can't get past the head sizes. His is waaay too big. Hers is just kind of too big by comparison... and the kid's head looks tiny compared to their giant heads.

And we happen to know that he is probably pointing a blade at the viewer because we know the movie, but if you don't know then you have no idea what he is doing.

Her arms are also way too thin.

the heads are shrinking gradually as it progresses, mostly to fit the faces in, but the hair still needs trimming. would you suggest shrinking the heads or enlarging the bodies?

and the blade is only facing that way in i couldn't figure out a decent/believable angle for it to sit at. what angle should the blade sit at?

i've also wondered if her arms are too long, is this true?

ehehee, he does too. i think the sweeney hair needs to be a little more above the ears at the moment. and not so circular, but more combed up with shine.

my first love of this musical was a cd. i think it was a collection of music's greatest villains or something like that. it only had the three segments of 'these are my friends' culminating to epiphany. and tim burton's work is something i don't want to like, but he's made a feature film of my favourite bedtime cd, and is all fluffy and mushy and luffly. angela lansbury still wins though.

and a few things fixed up according to suggestions. i'd still love to get the poses right. i get the feeling this is just going to be limbs akimbo if i continue like this.

You know, her expression is alright - and the kid's is almost passable. Sweeney there doesn't look threatening at all, though. He just looks vaguely grumpy. I would not feel scared or impassioned at all looking at this picture.

I'm no color expert, but I personally recommend nixing the black.

any pointers on how to make him look threatening? in some other way than big angry eyebrows and pointy teeth?

and yes, the black has got out of hand, i grant that.

Start by making a really angry face at yourself in the mirror. Push it, no matter how ridiculous it looks. Then, make a smug face. Tilt your chin up and look down your nose. Watch the line of your shoulders as you point at yourself angrily.
