Hey all,

Before I ask my question, I should introduce myself. I'm DistOne, I play the Bass (been playing for about 8 months, 3 of those seriously). I currently have a Yamaha RBX375 bass and an American Standard Jazz bass as well as a Squire acoustic guitar (as cheap as it is, it does sound pretty cool).

Anyway, I've been getting bass lessons for the last 3 months and I just don't feel like the instrument clicks with me; I'm really not that enthusiastic to play it. I don't want to give it up (especially considering I bought my Fender Jazz just over a month ago) but I think I'd like to try out the guitar, see if it fits me better (which I really think it will considering acoustic songs tend to be my favourite).

So my question is, if I change my lessons to guitar lessons, will my bass playing still improve? As in, I imagine if you can play guitar well, you could play bass well (at least with a pick). However I always here other bassists say that knowing how to play the guitar doesn't mean you know how to play a bass. Is this true?

I hope my ramblings make sense; I'm just in a confused state at the moment as to what to do.

if you learn to play any fretted instrument you be able to play others.
it all depends on far you advance into it.
if you become a master of the guitar, and understand all of the formulas behind the different scales and patterns etc.
then yah that will help with bass as well.

its just i doubt you'll know any actual bass songs.

dude stick to bass.

After a while when you understand music theory better and are really skilled, you should be able to switch over to guitar really fast. Guitar and
Bass aren't all that different, except for the fact that bass has no B or e strings and is an octave lower.

but yeah, stick to bass for now, and learn it well.

ok well first of all whoever told you being able to play guitar doesnt mean anything about your bass skills was probably a bassist who was upset because he couldnt play guitar, but a guitarist could outplay him on the bass.

they're really similar just one has fatter strings farther apart and a longer neck. i mean you can play bass in a band after like a couple days with it, no joke. guitar is a bit easier to play because the strings are thinner and easier to manipulate but you have to do a LOT more to be considered good enough to play in a band.

I was originally going to pick up bass to join a friends band, but I decided to go ahead and get a guitar instead and actually ended up passing this guy up in guitar skills before they could find another bassist haha. granted this guy kinda sucked, im still glad i chose guitar in the end because i know i can bass if my buddies need me to and still get to tear it up on the 6 string.

anyway, id say learn to slap on bass cuz thats really awesome and fun and its the time i feel most jealous of bassists when i see em doing it. im planning on buying a bass for myself so i can record it with my guitar tracks. im probably not even going to bother learning slap, though, because its just going to be for backing my own guitar tracks as i said.

as to if you should switch to guitar or not: its up to you. you gotta do what you feel youll enjoy the most in the long run. bass is more often based around clean sound than guitar, but listen to the bassist in placebo's "pure morning" thats a big part of what inspired me to start saving for a bass to go alongside my guitar. i think it sounds killer. also dont buy a bunch of single step up basses (like dont go gradually up the midrange price zone) just save up and buy a used rickenbacker for your next one, those are awesome instruments, the last one youll ever need.

i don't understand how anyone can NOT like playing bass, especially when jamming. maybe that's it, playing alone definetally get's boring, but playing the classics with some good friends = life.

Finger picking anyone?
But if you can play one or the other exceptionally well, you shouldn't have a problem switching over, it's not that different really.

Thanks for all the replies biggrin
I got in touch with my teacher about this and he was really cool with it. I'm going to start learning the guitar and he said if I ever want to switch back for a period of time and work on my bass playing then that's cool. So starting next week I'll be a guitarist biggrin
