I like avatars that go for something coherent, be it a concept, or by matching colors or themes, dressing up as someone, etc.
Anything that looks like the person took their time thinking of and putting together usually are my favorites. biggrin

Coordination is key to my liking as well as good, thought out themes. Sure there are a million narutos, but only a few may actually pull it off to my liking because they might be using an item to substitute something rather than use the pre-made naruto items. *huggles Kunais though...lol*

Cute and pretty. And coordinated. Yes, sometimes it's fun to put together a hot mess of an avatar, but I like it when the colors and shapes balance and flow pleasingly to the eye.

Something super cool/cute/pretty. Either a well conveyed theme, or color coordination. Purplewiz or LupusDeva(spelling?) are good examples. I detest people wearing sets togethor, where's the thought?

though my avi's tend to be a bit scary to the normal people, I'm not partial to overdressed avi's... throwing every MC you have on you at one time always makes you look overloaded and very messy

I don't know how to put my preference other than...black and white. I like sets if you add the right accessories to make it look awesome.
Colors are good, but to me, nothing beats the black and white combo. ^^
