Has anyone ever had someone come up to you while your mining and you go to drop a cargo container and they steal it from you and then someone else drops a cargo container and the person drops what they stole from you and picks up theirs. Then waits for you to do something and then blows your ship up. I HATE PEOPLE THAT DO THAT!!!!! (it was in a 0.9 area)

Can't say that that's happened to me. But I also never drop cargo containers whilst mining. confused
I've only had people take the cargo off of rats I blew up with my drones.

It happened to me, once, when I was a fresh noob (like, my third day in the game). Some guy picked up a cargo container that I had mined -- I had left to cart to the station and left 33 units of Veldspar in it. When I returned, he locked me. I warped out, but now that I know how the game works, I should have waited for him to fire on me. biggrin
Since then, I jetcan mine all the time, and haven't had anyone steal anything. Though I have to admit that I usually mine is rather unpopulated systems. I also have the benefit that if someone did steal a can from me, my husband in his Apocalypse will warp in to back me up soon...

I, fortunately, haven't had much run-ins with ill-intentioned players. When playing, I do my missions. I warp/jump to locations constantly, make sure I dock before going AFK. Only once I was locked on by a criminal, but I warped out before it could lock on. As for the future, well, who knows...

Unfortunately, I'd probably be the one stealing your ore. Unfortunately for you, that is.
Yarr!

Only time I've been fired upon is that gate camp at the Teonusude gate in Bosena. They were jamming, else I would've got a couple before I warped out with 26% hull. I had 2 medium reps and 2 hardeners running.

Exactly how does that work? Normally I just fill my hold, warp back over to a station, reprocess and repeat.

My friend got destroyed (but not pod killed) last week.
He was mining an exploration belt, not a regular asteroid belt, so the person must have scanned for him. The guy warped in, destroyed his Hulk, and left -- didn't steal the ore in the multiple cans that my friend had floating (which were worth around 25m). My friend podded back to the station, got his hauler, and retrieved all the ore.
To CommandoDude: To be more efficient, miners mine the ore, then jettison it. Then they keep mining, open the jettison can (which is called a jetcan), and place more ore into it. One jetcan holds about as much as an Iteron V with 5 expanded cargoholds in the low slot, so once the can is full, they get the Iteron V and get all the ore in one trip.
It's a lot more efficient than hauling every time you fill your hold, but of course, it's vulnerable to someone coming in and stealing the ore. However, ore thieves are rather rare, and the efficiency more than makes up for getting a can stolen once in a while.
And, of course, it opens you up to the trick that the original poster mentioned -- those people just want to shoot you without getting Concord on their asses.

Wait, then how do you get the Jettisoned Ore for refinement?

Lol, someone just tried to steal my jettisoned Can, except all that it contained was a note.

Jesus. I've had it with the can crap. Twice I've tried to fight off an ore stealer and twice my ships were destroyed. A Navitas I understand, but for my Cruiser to lose to a Frigate?
The fact modules need 95% Cap to be onlined is stupid, if it hadn't been for that I could have overcome that warp jamming and got out.
