I am currently in the middle of reading Tolkien's Silmarillion. The beginning is slow but it gets much more interesting. In my opinion it closely resembles the bible. Eru - God | Valar - angels | Melkor/Morgoth - Devil | Belrog and orks etc. - Demons |

It is funny how the Devil was once an Angel who turned bad and was cast out of Heaven. Melkor was a Vala and became angry and envious over the the other valar and became Evil and was rejected by the Valar.

(wow i just used "and" way to much.)

bado go Eru,
Matt

You say it's slow in the beginning...define "beginning". I am always up for a good read, and I usually read bad books all the way through because I keep waiting for it to get good... But some books are too hard for even me to slough through boring beginnings.

I want to learn how to say my name in Elvish! Nycole, or Nikki... Wanna teach me? 3nodding

Well I usually count the beginning as at least the first half of the book : ) I still can't quite get past the middle part. I've got a little bored with it and just get motivated to finish...

Sure...I usually go to a website that gives the meaning/origin of names, example: Katelyn means: perfect, pure, etc. then I go to the nearest Sindarin/Quenya - English Dictionary and make a direct translation. MY name supposedly means strong or great. Then I went to the Silmarillion and looked at the appendix. "Ar/ara" is the word for something close to great (I don't closely remember it and i don't have my Silmarillion at hand) and the suffix "dil/ndil" is a suffix making the name personal. "O/on/ond" is a suffix to a name making it masculine. You can change it up a bit too to make sound right as long as its not a huge change. Hance the name "Arendil". An example of this is Elrond. "El" meaning star and "ond" making it a masculine name. hence the name Elrond - "star". Arwen meaning "fair maiden" because "wen" means maiden.

I can probably translate your name for you If you want me to. Hope I could help!

I definitely think that the Simarillion was heavily influenced by Christian beliefs. Tolkien was after all Christian himself, and translated two prayers into Elvish (the Lord's Prayer and Ave Maria); others have translated chapters of the Bible. In the Book of Lost Tales (I'm currently reading Tolkien's unfinished works) there is a poem that was never really elaborated on that suggests a purgatory for Man, called Habbanan beneath the Stars.

But yeah, the parallels between Christian beliefs and the ideas presented in the Silmarillion (and the unfinished works) are many. I've heard people call the Silmarillion 'the Elven Bible'.

Arendilon
An example of this is Elrond. "El" meaning star and "ond" making it a masculine name. hence the name Elrond - "star". Arwen meaning "fair maiden" because "wen" means maiden.
Elrond = "Star-dome" ( "Rond" = "dome" referring to the heavens. )

Arwen = "Noble Maiden" ( "Ar-" = "Noble" ex. "Ar-Pharazon" )

Sorry... *Cough.*

Anywho... I would like to say, that The Sil is by far my favorite book. ^^

The telling of the creation of Arda has to be my favorite part, closely followed by the Tale of Luthien. ^^

I own a First Edition. razz

lol, nimmy... what am I going to do with you?

I guess it is good if you correct me because I'm human unlike somebody, and I make mistakes....

a first edition huh?
PostPosted: Fri Jul 18, 2008 3:30 pm

Yes, a First Edition. And yes, I AM rubbing it in. It's my one claim to fame.

...

At least two other people in the Subforum have one too. xp

...

I can go on...

Elros = "Star-Foam" ("El-" = "Star"; "-Ros" = "Froth")

Elladan = "Elf-Man" (Prefix "El-" derived from "Eldar" = "Elf"; "Adan" = "Man")

Nerwen = "Man-Maiden" (Prefix "Ner" derived from "Neri", singular "Ner" = "Man" in relation to male elves, not to be confused with "Adan" which refers to the race; "-Wen" = "Maiden")

Celeborn = "Silver-Tree" ("Celeb-" = "Silver"; "Orno" = "Tree")
And now... In Quenya!!!
Teleporno = "Silver-Tree" ("Tyelpe-" = "Silver" ; "Orno" = "Tree")

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. razz

...

Poor mortals. v.v

...

Good thing Nimrodel only spoke Nandorin. I suck at Quenya and Sindarin. xp

I just ordered a copy of the Silmarillon like a week ago so it should be coming in soon.

I always though though, that elves were the angels and orcs were the demons.

I suppose thats a way of thinking about it. But what would that make The Valar? And the and the and the...... Oh well, it's a huge deal. But I can see how Orcs and such would be demons as they are the minions of Morgoth, but Eldar, erm, Elves are just the children of the Illuvatar. (Um, sorry if this information is incorrect. I'm just trying to remember this off the top of my head.)

Cool, at least someone's putting effort into reading it. xp

I think one-on-one comparisons between Tolkien's world and the Bible are a bit limited, just one aspect of the story. He was heavily influenced by the Bible but also by the legend of Atlantis, Norwegian sagas, celtic folklore and a number of other sources.
