This is an essay that I wrote for my philosophy class that I procrastinated to do until the last day before it's due and ... a lot of crap happened which is partially in my latest journal entry if you would like to bother reading it. XD But surprisingly, it got an A, meaning the class must be pretty laid back or something..
The topic was anything that was discussed in class, along with my arguments regarding the issue or something. So I chose it on this weird theory some guy made after he got kicked out of his home country for making so many anti-god type philosophies or something.. meaning it sounds like some thing he bullshitted in hopes of grabbing enough attention by his home country to let him back in or something, but whatever. @_@ I ripped through his theory anyway.
" In class, we have discussed a theory regarding how god is perfect, but if he does not exist, then he is not perfect, therefore god exists. However, I was surprised as to how no one questioned the relation of man’s definition of perfection and the existence of a being. How did a thought of god’s perfection have little to no influence in whether if he existed or not slip by without even any acknowledgement? There can be many other counter theories regarding this theory. By the end of this essay, there may be more questions than answers, but I believe that is simply a part of philosophy.
The definition of perfect is as follows: adj. conforming absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type. With this definition, we must ask ourselves what our ideal type of a perfect god would be. If it were me, I would picture an all-knowing entity shrouded in light with great super natural powers. As perfect as that may seem, it may or may not be absolute perfection. Either that or people’s ideals of a perfect god differs, in which case, people will believe in different ideals of gods. But how does each of our ideal thoughts of god prove its own existence through its perfection? And how would each of our different ideals of gods exist if they do exist for their perfection, both within and outside of religious teachings?
How is it that a god cannot be perfect without actually existing? What defines perfection as something that exists, or is it the other way around, where when something exists, it is then perfect? I for one do not see the relationship between perfection and existence, and even when I consider it, the same theory does not make sense when applied to other suggestions of hypothetical perfection of ideal situations. So what makes this theory regarding god any more logical than others? I personally believe that god can be perfect without the need of existing, and that people themselves are making the lack of existence of god as their view of imperfection.
Now, there are some theories that I can come up with that can counter this theory of how god must exist because he is perfect. If a god truly is perfect and such a perfect being must exist in order for it to remain perfect, then there are two cases where this theory would have a flaw. One theory is that god is not perfect, which may be more apparent in polytheistic religions. In polytheistic religions, often times certain few gods tend to be known as more popular or powerful god than the countless other gods, which differences in abilities are depicted in their stories. Another theory is that our concept of a perfect god is impossible due to our own imperfections of our concepts and mind. These counter theories would easily challenge the views of god’s existence.
With these thoughts in mind, I question whether if this theory of god’s existence supporting its own perfection are true to its words beyond that which contradicts this theory. I have revealed some conditions where the theory may be wrong in two points. The relevance between perfection and existence has very little ties but its own concept, depending on the people’s ideals and concept of a perfect god. Also, if god was not perfect, then it would create an exception to this theory that would prove how god exists. These possibilities are the reasons why I was surprised that no one questioned the theory of god’s existence through its perfection in class. "
