- Destroyed Housing District -
Located near the western part of the island and protected by the cliffs, the housing district lay in bits and pieces. After the great destruction of most of the island due to the Black Spring event, the few remaining shinobi and villagers were left with nothing to their names. There are two main roads that criss-cross each other, like a coordinate grid. In each section, there lies much ruble from the fallen homes that once stood tall. Grass has taken over much of the ground area, along with some leafy foliage that has begun growing on some of the rubble. Most villagers and Shinobi now reside in makeshift huts and tents so they at least have a place to go to cover their heads when the weather gets nasty out.

A small moan sent low vibrations throughout a room that didn't belong to their owner, eye lashes softly fluttered until they were finally thrown back to reveal still tired eyes which shot around the room that wasn't naturally their after the nightly napping. Sorri jumped out the straw bed and looked around frantically, what was this? he spotted his mother and father asleep in bed together, that was a slightly reassuring sign of safety, but still the was still the mystery of their current whereabouts. Sorri began to slowly tiptoe around searching for his cloths. Upon finding and applying said attire he snuck a look out the window....this was the village but there was bodies along the streets, even on the carts...no blood. Sorri pushed the door open and leaped out on the count of five and fell into a roll next to three parallel bodies and flipped them over. Still there was no blood, but there were laid out right? Wait...there was a sound ...snoring? Maybe someone had snuck some sort of toxin in the water and food supply?Damn...
Sorri stayed low and took a full three hundred and sixty look around before his pun took his kunia out and twisted it in his right hand before sprinting of to an area of safety, the academy, maybe he could find Yuki-sensei or on of the of the other teachers were there, maybe he wasn't the only one woke...then again he may run into an enemy, but the requirement attempt was a necessary, right?

Shinichi gripped his head, wincing as even the brief race with Noburo caught him out of breath. Whatever drug had knocked him out earlier on still was wearing off, although Shinichi sensed that it would be better to let the incident pass. He had been discussing common Orochi attack maneuvers with Sachiriku, only to find the two of them fast asleep, heavy bodies sprawled on a mountain of maps and charts. After making a quick round of the village and seeing nothing set in flames of missing, the ANBU had to attribute the sudden loss of time to friendly forces. Seiteki and Hanabira didn't mention anything and he didn't have a hangover so Shinichi had to conclude that a genjutsu was used. And who else had such awesome strength except for Ichi?
Shinichi unlocked his apartment, his eyes closed in meditation. As much as he wanted to believe that enemies had attacked while he was drooling in his sleep, it was much more likely that Ichi forced his soldiers to take one last peaceful rest before the war. But, why in the middle of the afternoon and why without any warning whatsoever? Shinichi sighed and made a point to speak to his boss about this mystery later. He had to believe that the man had the village's best interests at heart.
Until then, there was work to do. Shinichi pushed the speculation about his unwitting nappy time out of his head and set the bundles of long-stemmed flowers on a table. He lit a fire and threw himself onto the ground, spidery legs automatically curling into a proper sitting position. "Noburo," he called, "Get a vase from the cabinet." When she called him a naughty name, Shinichi frowned, but repeated the command in a firmer tone.

Noburo whined like a puppy dog, whirling around Shinichi and pestering him to play some more with her. Her childlike nature could only pick up that Shinichi was putting too much thought into yet another one of his overly protective schemes for the village. In her mind, they were quite silly, since who would be dumb enough to attack a place with so many powerful men and women, all trained in the killing arts? It wasn't as if Shimagakure was the prime hunting spot either, an island isolated with no bigger prey than the monsters that lurked beneath the waves. But a cool swim in the middle of winter would be kind of fun and she'd get to poke fun at Shinichi for his human weakness against the cold.
Noburo opened her mouth to suggest they go hunt sharks, but was interrupted by Shinichi command. She hissed viciously, complaining in her own language that the flowers would best attract prey in dirt. Instead of throwing something at her like usual, however, her partner shook his head and pointed a finger at the kitchen. His eyes revealed that he would not budge and that it was in her best interest to obey him. Noburo cocked her head at this new display, more curious than scared since her human almost never directed someone else to do something he could take care of by himself unless there was an ulterior motive. Intrigued, Noburo flitted into the kitchen, cursing when the cabinet proved to be one of those made for human hands. She scowled, digging her claws into the narrow crack, trying hard not to splint the wood.

What was taking her so long? Shinichi grudgingly bounced to his feet and made his way into the kitchen. A low chuckle escaped from the humorless man as he watched his bird fumble with a simple cabinet. It would be much easier to help her, but there would be times when he couldn't do everything himself. In a domestic sense, that moment wouldn't appear until many long years into the future, but he would need to control the rowdy falcon on the field. Due to Noburo's impulsive nature, she had never been assigned to any tough mission before since the Kage had always been afraid that their animal weapon would backfire on the squad. Shinichi smirked at the precaution as his thoughts returned to a clumsy Noburo. "Try yanking at the corners," he suggested, trying to contain the amusement in his voice. Animals probably didn't like to be mocked. Noburo might even refuse to listen to him completely unless he proved he sincerely wanted to help her. Shinichi formed a makeshift claw with his own fingers and easily lifted a corner of another cabinet.

Although her first instinct was to claw Shinichi's ugly laugh out of his throat, the man quickly stopped as if he actually sensed her discomfort. Noburo watched her partner with suspicion when he demonstrated the maneuver, though she noted that his claws looked nothing like her magnificent weapons. Her eyes wandered to the free hanging shredders and Noburo flexed her talons like a woman would stare at her painted fingernails. They were stronger than steel and yet didn't chip quite as easily, the perfect tools for a born hunter. A gentle bark from Shinichi brought Noburo's attention back to the task at hand. She sighed, but gripped the edge of the cabinet and dug her smallest talon in at the corner. Surprisingly, the cover flung open. A startled Noburo barely caught the door before it slammed shut. She gripped the slippery glass vase and proudly displayed the dirty, crusted object to Shinichi.

"Now, wash-," the lanky man started, but stopped as he remembered his goal. None of the children really liked it when they accomplished a tough task only to be rewarded by another one. If he was going to become a better teacher, he had to think of their needs first. Shinichi nodded conspicuously, but decided that wasn't enough so he complimented Noburo with a "Good job." Great, that drew a proud beam from her eyes, although as with Hanabira, he could still see obvious traces of distrust. Swallowing his uncertainty, Shinichi molded his face into a warmish expression of delight, pushing away the fact that all she had done was to open a simple cabinet. Now what? He had to transition into the next job, but without sounding too authoritative. "Now let's try something harder. Rinse the vase out." The first part of his command wasn't too shabby, but he rushed the final sentence. Shinichi frowned at Noburo's blank look. Was she stupid or something? He tilted his head in the direction of the sink, tapping his fingers impatiently. Why wasn't she smiting the scrum right out of that vase already? It occurred to the man that Noburo had probably never washed anything in her life. Shinichi bit down his frustration and calmly told the gyrfalcon, "Press down on that pump. That will get the water flowing. Fill the vase with the water. Then dump the water out and repeat everything again." He never realized how many steps there was to such a simple task.

Now that was plain weird! Noburo screeched softly, waving a wing in front of Shinichi to determine if he had drunken too much liquor because why else would he be acting so strange? What he had her do wasn't embarrassing enough for his calculating mind. If he was drunk, she could always laugh at the silly things he said without worrying about him remembering. The one time Shinichi had gone home doozy, after some festival where he had mistaken the new sake for water, he kept on muttering nice things about Tomoko. But now, Shinichi's eyes could follow her movements to a T. Noburo almost missed his compliment, but she wished she had. The gyrfalcon, stunned, nearly dropped the vase, but she managed a curling smile. When he went on to describe "washing", Noburo listened without drifting off for a second. That didn't sound so hard. With one foot, she pushed down on the pump while holding the fragile vase under the flowing water. She wasn't used to holding things still so it took a few tries for her to steady her claw long enough to collect enough water, but she managed to do it just fine.

Certainly nobody would be too comfortable with a killing machine with Noburo's temper handling his only glass product, but part of teaching involved trust. If students weren't exposed to dangerous objects head on, either a fear of the kunai or a reckless curiosity would develop. But, as Shinichi grudgingly admitted, if they were forced into too scary scenarios too soon, their self-confidence might plummet to the point of not wanting to train anymore. A snarl escaped Shinichi's thoughts, which stayed on his lips when a little water dripped off the vase in Noburo's claws and onto the kitchen floor. "Baka!" Shinichi barked, seizing the wet glass from her claws and drying it with a towel. He fumed silently, not believing that anyone could be so dumb and could lack as much common sense! A bop to the back of his head made Shinichi turn around and throw a punch at the perpetrator, although he stopped his fist halfway through. Damn! This was exactly what prevented him from effectively using Noburo in combat in the first place. He had to stamp out her unneeded qualities, not encourage them. "Take the vase out there," he muttered, shoving the holder into her claws to keep them out of his skin, literally. Shinichi ran his fingers through his hair, moaning when he felt a trickle of blood.
Directing Noburo 2d20 + Handle Animal 21 DC: 31 Train: 0/5
Noburo snapped when Shinichi took her work from her so she did the only logical thing. She launched herself at him and dug a talon into that blasted hair which everyone identified the grumpy man with. She was starting to care as much about the vase as if it had been her lunch! The gyrfalcon saw the sign of violence erupting from way Shinichi's breath quickened even before his fist came at her. Dropping into an impromptu dive, she ducked from the nonexistent blow, a fact which registered on her luckily just before Noburo planned to rip the man's throat out. Good, that idiot had a brain! Huffing, she snatched the vase from the brute and got out of the kitchen as soon as she could, nearly dropping the slender object in her escape. She would show him who was the real genius! Noburo fumbled a little more with the vase before wrapping her talons around its neck. Now, where to put it? Well, what use would a vase be without flowers in it, right? Noburo climbed about a metre into the air and spread her wings so that she glided to the table with the jasmine. This way she could concentrate on gripping the vase, which was still slick from water Shinichi had missed. There! Who was the smart one now? She yelled her raucous self praise into the kitchen doorway, stamping her foot furiously.

Clutching a gauze pad to the back of his head, the man that cautiously peered around the door frame expected the equivalent of a war scene in his living room; Maybe half of his furniture would be on the fire and the other thrown out the window. Or Noburo could be about to launch a surprise attack that would really wreck their relationship. But when he chanced a glance into the dystopia, Shinichi sharply exhaled to find Noburo waiting for him to continue directing her, an undamaged vase sitting next to the falcon. Still wary, he stepped into the living room, getting his chakra flowing in case she suddenly changed her mind. Who could tell with an unpredictable roommate? Once he was within a few feet of her and still alive, Shinichi grunted, but said nothing more. He was ticked that she so pompously acted like she didn't need him. When he was teaching her to use a sink, Shinichi wandered if Noburo was only mocking him in her own special way. Sure that she was smart enough to finish preparing the flowers by herself, he pointed to the sweet-smelling blossoms and asked an impatient, "Well? What are you waiting for?"

The sight of a paranoid Shinichi only rattled her nerves further. She expected praise for her deed, but he regarded her as if she were a criminal, or about to do something stupid. Well, right now he was the one being an idiot. Noburo didn't see a reason why she should extend her trust to a human who didn't respect her skills enough to trust in her. Giving Shinichi the cold shoulder, for he wasn't even worth the scars she inflicted on him, Noburo picked up her own bundle of brightly colored flowers and left the apartment. Outside, she scratched a few groves in the dirt and stuck the pastels in. It was difficult to handle the delicate bush clover blossoms, especially since the young sprouts were still too immature to bear fruit which would strengthen their stems. Noburo knew that during the winter, food was scarce, even for her, so she needed to pay careful attention to ensuring the bush clovers survive through whatever storm came their way. At least these were known for their resilience.

Shinichi's eyes flashed like a candle before a lion's pupils. Very few people had ever defied him in any way, partially because he was rarely in a command position that offered choices other than to obey him or die. Even the academy students he had tortured up until a few weeks ago felt their lives were in danger if they screwed up. A trickle of sweat rolled down the ANBU's face at this unpleasant thought and how he failed to become a role model for the next generation. It was too late to redeem himself with the kids, but maybe he had a chance with his roommate. Noburo was bound to be trickier to control since she could take him out in two seconds flat, but even she couldn't argue with convincing logic. He just had to appeal to what she called rationality, which probably meant leaving a chunk of his ego behind. This training was meant to improve their bond, not to do chores.
"Hayano," Shinichi croaked softly, pushing the vile taste down. If Noburo saw that he could concede in their debate over what species she was, perhaps she'd be willing to compromise as well. In his mind, though, Shinichi scoffed at the gyrfalcon for being so stubborn and not seeing the clear fact that she was way too large for a peregrine falcon, a hayabusa. But, he tried to make his voice as neutral as possible to appease her. Shinichi froze, not sure what to say next. Anything that came at ease to him was sure to sound like a command, which established a detrimental hierarchy in their relationship. Well, it was obvious he was the stronger man in the partnership, but as drilled into his head by the other shinobi, brute force didn't always solved problems. It just worked most of the time. But what would work now? Shinichi flipped back to the way the world's finest diplomat phrased his wishes. Ichi's voice echoed in his head, the silky voice soothing Shinichi's anxiety, giving him the boost of confidence he needed. "Why don't we work on smoothing out your high speed turns?" Shinichi suggested, his voice gentler though his expression remained blank. He nodded for Noburo to take them to whatever training ground she chose.

[Exit to Forest of Sorrows]
Stupid, stupid, overbearing, masochistic... The insults rolled off her tongue and towards the bright bush clovers. Noburo's feathers stiffened when Shinichi's footsteps approached her from behind, then stopped. To a normal person, this would signify doubt (as it was in reality) but considering that the near silent feet belonged to a mass murderer, Noburo's survival instincts kicked in. She dropped her work and scuttled up onto a drain, hissing viciously at her partner, warning him against coming any closer. It never occurred to her that the distance was nothing to the ninjutsu user. Noburo glared at Shinichi and puffed her feathers, standing at edge so that she appeared bigger than her already massive size. Well, was he going to attack today? She swore she was going to break that pretty little neck of his! All of a sudden, Noburo decided that she would automatically hate anything that smelled even remotely of jasmine since it reminded her of this moron and his lover boy. Yesterday she roosted outside to enjoy the last warm day of the year before winter, but got bored and decided to snap Shinichi's kunais in half for fun. But, peeking in through his living room window, a sight she never expected to see was being played out full force. Since Shinichi always scolded her for breaking things, Noburo was furious that he said nothing after tearing up that room worse than she ever did!
But all that confusion whirled out of her head as soon as the rusty drain snapped under her weight. Noburo blasphemed and soared into the air, riding circles around Shinichi. He was saying something and she wouldn't have caught the murmur except that a gust of wind blew the nickname her way. Hayano? Something was wrong! Noburo screeched menacingly, demanding to know what was up with Shinichi because he did not just say that to her! The man rarely addressed anybody by anything other than extremely formal means. Everyone was called by their clan name or with -san and she'd only seen him drop the -sama with Ichi twice. So it made no sense when he affectionately combined her name together like they'd been childhood friends or something. Noburo's amber eyes hardened in suspicion with Shinichi's next words, a complete flop from his usual gruff orders. Did he hit his obnoxiously tall head on the door frame?! Noburo ruffled her feathers, however, not able to come up with a reason to oppose his idea. Her pestering for them to go do some heavy duty training must have finally gotten through to his head, that was all. She whisked through the air, already forgetting the incident. Noburo tucked her head in between her legs and tried to do a rapid u-turn in the air, showing off while yelling back at Shinichi for being so slow. He certainly fooled her with his claim of being the village's fastest shinobi.

Shisei’s feet took him to a new area in the west. It was full of two story apartments, but those were not the only homes. Along the path of intertwining roads, the young Orochi could see ranch homes, huts, closely together on a path with two roads that intersected after every few houses. On the outer parts of this section also lay houses. These buildings had small shrubs of grass growing and a few wild plants.
“That will soon change…” the boy thought to himself as his feet kept him moving. Soon the snow would fall and this district would be a mess. Shisei began to wonder who lived in this area. Perhaps it was an area for his peers? Or maybe teachers of the academy. If the teachers did live in this side, they probably would make their students shovel the path when it becomes icy. Ohh the good times that lay ahead for the students… Shisei ran the path of the district until eventually his body was out and onto another path.

Z mumbled quietly to himself as he sat on a red beanbag chair in his dark room. It was his least favorite day of the year and he had decided to hide instead of deal with his problems? What day was it? His birthday of course! How he hated his birthday. It wasn't actually his birthday of course. Since he had been found on the beach by his adoptive parents he had no knowledge of his actual birthdate. But noooooo. They couldn't just leave well enough alone. No, they had to go out of their way to celebrate his false birthday every year even with his complaints and objections. He snarled slightly as he stood up and tossed the book he had been reading behind him. He was in such a bad mood right now. He had to do something to take his boredom and annoyance off his mind. He was bored of reading and he was far too tired to train. In addition he had to stay in the house lest he run into Kenom and his inevitable wishes of happy birthday. After a moment of thought he got an idea and picked up his log. With a few page flips he found his solution. He would bake cookies! He took a recollective glance at the instructions.

Zero yawned as he tried to read his chicken scratch hand writing. He hadn't written the directions for the scrumptious treats very well. He had of course been sick and tired, as he often was, and his notes were short and sweet. Mainly just the ingredients and very light and adjectiveless directions. Z was by no means a good cook. After a few deadly attempts at making breakfast he was put off breakfast duty forever and began taking care of more manual labor than more artistic tasks. Now of course he had no responsibilities with the exception of doing well at the academy. He sighed as he continued deciphering his own handwriting.

Z was starting to get rather frustrated about his handwriting. Even after he finally understood what one line meant he forgot it as soon as he looked away from it. He really had to work on that dreadfull memory of his. Or get better handwriting. After scrambling around a bit he found a pen and paper and began to rewrite the ingredients as he deciphered them. "Let's see . . . 11/2 cups of flour. eleven-halfs? . . . One and one half!" He quickly exclaimed. God he was terrible at this.

Uphill... or a neverending horizontal path... what was this feeling?
The dawn had not quite hit him yet, but something was driving him out of bed. At the same time, not a single inch of his body would allow him to draw away from this state. It wasn't as though he were half asleep. It was an unconsciousness: a void. His thoughts seemed to be unaffected, although if he could dream in such a state, they would all be shrouded in the same nothingness.
Is there... something there?
He wasn't able to comprehend anything he was thinking, but that didn't stop his mind from working. Was this a dream? Nothing seemed under his control, he simply existed within his mind. No body, no grasp of any physi-
"Hem..." The sounds of stirring finally came from under the lump of blankets covering the bed. Still unable to awaken, he took in a deep breath, his hands clinging aimlessly to whatever his fingers came across. It was only when he felt the resistance of yanking at the bedpost that he finally managed to pull himself away from his strange state.
"Was that... memory?" His eyes started to water from opening so quickly, but a gentle brush against the pillow clutched in his left arm easily took care of it. He had slept a lot lately, ever since that morning everyone in the village had fallen asleep at the same time.
"Morning... today is..." A shock creeped into Xyn's face, causing it to freeze in place before he dropped his head as deeply into the pillow as he could. He'd have to leave his bed eventually but... today... nobody else knew about today.. right? Maybe he should try and hide for the rest of the day...

- Twilight time - After a rather long while of writing and re-writing his directions he stared at the directions. Now that he had them he wasn't sure how to start. Well I guess I'll get the ingredients." He said rather idly. He paused for a minute. He had no idea where anything was in this house. He was beginning to regret his parent's lax attitude about his responsibilities in this house. He sighed and began looking around the kitchen for his ingredients. Salt and sugar were fairly easy to find. Flour took a bit longer. He found eggs and butter last. "Okay. Now . . . pans?" He thought coming up with the next step. Within minutes he had all of the required pans and pots and cutlery.

-Twilight Time- Zero took a deep breath before continuing with his work. All this scrambling around was rather tiring. It was nice to finally know where everything in the house was. He could finally make food for himself without relying on his brother or his parents. Thinking of which, where was Kenom. He should have been here by now. It was past midnight, which meant it was no longer his own birthday, and with only the two of them in the house he couldn't be out doing chores this late. Now that he thought of it where was their father. It had been three days. He had never been gone this long when it was just he and his brother. He knew he had business to do back in his home in the lightning country but he should have been back by now.
