Neoni'liga smiled as she trotted along the beach, once again in search of shells. She had recently added a bunch of pretty new shells to the seaweed necklace that her mother had made her when she was a cub, so now her secret stash of shells was running a bit low. Also, she liked making shell necklaces and bracelets for others, so it didn't hurt to have a few spare.

A fair distance away from where Neoni'liga was searching for shells, Penda'ji was searching for someone to help him. His mother had gone to sleep a few days ago, and she had yet to wake up. Because of this, the cub was forced to leave her in search of help and food. He hoped that if he found another adult, they would be strong enough to wake his mother up. He was still only small, so he figured that he wasn't able to shake his mother hard enough to wake her up.

The shells around Neoni'liga's neck gently clinked together as she trotted along, causing her to start humming a tune to accompany the pretty beat. Along with the sound of the waves crashing on nearby rocks, and the sound of wet sand crunching beneath her paws, the blurple lioness thought she had invented the greatest song ever!
What wasn't great was the lack of shells today. For some reason, she just couldn't find any. She giggled as she pondered whether or not Ravi had beat her to them today. With a happy sigh, she breifly looked up from the sand to look across the horizon. It was then that she spotted a small pink figure in the distance. "Huh?" Curious, she broke into a steady jog to go and get a closer look.

Penda'ji whimpered as he walked, his paws beginning to ache after travelling so long without having a rest. He was just really worried about his mother, and so was very determined to find someone who could help her. His mother had told him at some point that not many others lived on the coast, so he was beginning to think that he wouldn't be able to find someone.
It wasn't long before all the hopeless and negative thoughts got on top of him. Tired and upset, Penda'ji dropped to the ground and began to cry. He didn't even notice the approaching lioness.

As Neoni'liga got closer, she realised that it was a little cub who had caught her attention. "Oh my gosh!" She broke into a run as she saw the cub collapse, her heart beating rapidly as she began to panic. When she reached the cub, she dropped to the ground in front of him and lowered her head to his level. "Are you OK?!"
It was then that she saw that the cub was crying. "Oh dear, please don't cry!" She said, still in a mild state of panic. "Are you hurt little one? Where are your parents? Are you lost?" Neoni'liga didn't do well in negative situations, as her happy disposition rarely allowed her to encounter them.

Penda'ji blinked and rubbed his eyes as he heard quickly approaching footsteps. It was a lioness! Finally, he had found someone to help him. He was still deeply upset though, so he continued to cry until she reached him. When she dropped down on the ground in front of him, the cub shimmied backwards a little. He was a timid little thing, so although he could tell that the lioness was simply worried about him, he was still rather scared.
In an effort to be brave, Penda'ji blinked the tears from his eyes and gulped before taking in a deep breath in order to tell the lioness what was wrong. "I need help. My mother fell asleep a few days ago and she won't wake up." He whimpered a little. "I'm scared and hungry, and my paws hurt."

Once the cubs had explained what was wrong, Neoni'liga could only think of one explaination. His mother must've died. It was hard for her to believe that such a terrible thing could've happened in or around the Bahari'mtoto lands, but then, life wasn't always as bright and cheerful as Neoni'liga believed it was.
"Oh no..." She said finally, her red eyes glistening as she thought how best to tell the poor little cub that his mother was gone. Maybe she wouldn't have to though. "What about your father? Does your father know that your mother has fallen asleep?"

Penda'ji continued to whimper as he gave a small shake of his head. "I don't really have a father. My mother said that she left him before I was born, so I don't know where he is now." He now wondered whether or not the lioness could actually help him. The look on her face suggested that things were worse than he had first thought.
He quickly disregarded that though, and got to his feet. "Come on, I'll show you where she is! You're big, so you'll be able to wake her up!"

Neoni'liga bit her bottom lip as the cub revealed that his father wasn't around. It was down to her then to tell him why his mother hadn't woken up. At this point, she felt like crying herself, but she knew that she had to be strong for the little cub.
"What's your name?" She managed a small smile, but it soon faded when the cub motioned for her to follow him. With a heavy sigh, she shook her head. "I'm so sorry to tell you this but...your mother is gone. When any creature goes to sleep for that long, it means that they're never going to wake up. I'm so sorry." With that, she lowered her head.

The little pink cub remained silent for the longest time. How could that be possible? His mother had been totally fine before going to sleep that night, so why was it that she would never wake up. "You're wrong!" He shouted finally, tears welling up in his eyes. "She's just really tired, that's all!" Although the majority of him didn't want to believe it, a small part of him could tell that the blue lioness was telling the truth. His mother was gone, and there was nothing he could do about it.
Soon after, Penda'ji burst into tears, unable to cope with what he had been told. He ran into the blue lioness and buried his head in her chest, completely devestated by his loss.

Neoni'liga could feel a lump in her throat as the cub threw himself at her. This was the worst thing she had ever experienced in her entire life. She quickly lifted a paw to cuddle the cub tightly. "Don't worry. I know I can't replace your mother, but I promise that I'll look after you. You'll be safe here, and I'll never let anything bad happen to you. I promise!" Saying that, she looked down at the cub, hoping her promise was enough to reassure him.
"Just call me Neoni'liga, OK? Or Neoni for short." She smiled, trying to reassure the cub some more. She knew it would be a long time before he got over this loss, but she was hopeful that she could help him.

Although he was heart-broken, the brightly-coloured lioness' words comforted him somewhat. "O...OK." He said finally, agreeing to accept her promise. "My name is Penda'ji." His whole body was shaking as he remained close to Neoni'liga, seemingly unwilling to let her go at first. As much as he would've liked to, he couldn't bring himself to return her smile. It would most likely be a long time before he smiled again.

"Penda'ji. That's a lovely name." She replied, before lowering her paw. "Well Penda'ji, my den isn't too far from here. I have a fresh kill there, so you'll be able to feed." Neoni'liga then motioned towards her back. "I'll carry you there on my back, so your paws can get a nice rest." With that, she carefully picked up the cub by the scruff of his neck and placed him on her back. "Don't worry dear, you're going to be fine." Saying that, she slowly started walking to her den, hoping and praying that the little cub would be OK.

Penda'ji nodded slowly and allowed Neoni'liga to pick him up. He felt safe with her, even though they had only just met, under very upsetting circumstances. "Thank you." He whispered in her ears, before resting his head on her back. It wasn't long before he was fast asleep, the events of the last few days having got on top of him. He wasn't so sure that things were ever going to alright again, but he was sure that Neoni'liga would do her best to look after him.
