Being highly interested in both the paranormal world and the steampunk one, a question crossed my mind the other day as I lightly sipped a cup of tea in my study. I thought, how would someone fight against or harness the wild powers of the paranormal, spirits, were-creatures, vampires, should he or she encounter them with steampunk-styled tools and the like? I set about trying to put together a kit for fun of things I’ve been modifying, but I’m at a large loss! And so, I come to you all. What would you put in YOUR steampunk-styled paranormal hunting kit? Any input of tools, methods, anything is greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

You could try to make a rapid firing crossbow for vampires. Flamethrowers are good for killing paranormal stuff. Besides that, a portable tesala (or however you spell that) coil.

heart Flamethrowers..... XD

Hmm...

-A shiny brass compass-like gauge to see how high a level of paranormal activity is going on would be useful
-Clockwork nightvision goggles! (One can dream, can't they? smile )
-A flamethrower for the nasty things
-An old-fashioned camera for evidence photos (with a flash bulb handy)
-A nice, sturdy leather knapsack with brass details to keep everything in

Other than that, not quite sure what a paranormal hunter would use.

I'd take inspiration from the movies. Van Helsing has all sorts of period gadgetry geared toward combat of the paranormal, oddly fitting for your interest. The devices used in the Ghostbusters flicks, modified with brass and clockwork, would be interesting, depending on exactly what level of technology you're wanting to employ.

Ah, and don't forget zombies. All they need is a good axe or shotgun to the head. If you really really want to get creative with it, check out the Ravenholm level of the video game Half Life 2. Guns that shoot sawmill blades, gas-powered spinning scythe traps... the zombies never stood a chance.

To quote something a little more modern, "A stake through the heart? Are you kidding? That would kill anybody!" I've been pondering how to assemble some sort of piston-driven polearm for months now and I've got the mechanics of it worked out, but I still need to figure out how to power it without encumbering myself unnecessarily. One would think that (essentially) a handheld pile-driver would make short work of most things, especially (if the legends are to be believed) if you make the head out of some sort of silver alloy.

Taking a cue from terrible vampire flicks involving pickup trucks with winches and a**-kicking clergymen, crossbows firing barbed bolts with- and this is the most important thing -lines attached to Very Heavy Things. Drag them out into the light and let them burn to death.

Of course, nothing is an adequate substitute for simply being a skilled fighter and hacking them to pieces, so sharp implements should always be kept handy for dismemberment. I'm partial to large knives, but there are quite a number of saws in my shed that could be put to use.

theres a fictional graphic novel that covers this kind of theme, i believe the heroes in the book call themselves 'the rippers' and wear skull masks when they go hunting evil creatures.
it has a few characters who are also included in the league of extraordinary gentlemen

What is the comic called? I would very much like to read it so that I may cleverly rip it off.

Just kidding, by the way.

Rulin' ya universes...

I must say, I love the concept of bashing up zombies with a wrench (like Winry x3)
...since 1992.

The old fashioned way: Crucifix/Holy Water/Stake-through-the-heart. Failing that, a revolver with Silver Bullets, a sharp sword and ample fire cannot hurt*.

*unless proper safety measures are not applied on the part of the individual.

If you're particularly clever on the technical side of things here's a project for you:

Take a little inspiration off Ghost Busters. They trap ghosts with vacuum cleaners. xd

Modify one of those old vacuum cleaners that are a little tiny box with a hose coming out of it and it has a strap so you can wear it like a bag.
Essentially all you do is make a tiny contraption over the top that blows out steam every time the vacuum turned on, attach that to the box, and then decorate the whole thing in a steampunk fashion.

Also, if you're super pro, or you have a lot of time on your hands you can tool around with the vacuum and figure out how to actually get it to run off of steam. biggrin

Some of those old vacuum cleaners wouldn't need that much modification...

Could be steampunk
Dieselpunk-ish

On another note, Would you like some A-bomb anxiety with your clean floors?

Anyway, here's what would be in my paranormal arsenal...

-Something like a nail gun, only loaded with wooden stakes
-Flamethrower
-A device like a swiss army knife, which, by extending a number of foldable arms, could be converted into the holy symbols of most major religions
-A water cannon with one reservoir filled with holy water, and one filled with juiced wolfsbane
-An elephant gun & a gatling gun, with silver and iron rounds for both

In the vein of my fixation with elements that react violently with water, I want an express rifle loaded with hollow rounds divided into two compartments. The compartment at the tip is filled with rubidium (my favorite element, as long as I'm being ridiculous). The other contains water. My major difficulty is how to test this. confused

I would say watch the (as bad as it is) Von Helsing movie. It got some pretty cool artifacts that could very well be used as Steampunk resouces or as inspiration for it.

Plus the clothes in that movie (though historically incorrect) could very well be Steampunkish.

I myself, if I were a Paranormal Hunter, would go for the silver tipped crossbow bolts for Werewolves and oak bolts for Vampires, holywater for ghosts and such like and other fun gadgets and trinkets for exorsisms.

But then again, I would most likely be the one that dabbled in necromancy and be the one causing all these troubles for everyone else. With a great deal of fun I might add. biggrin

Adding to this, I was just thinking that some sort of Steampunk Ghostbusters would require a sort of mechanism to keep the ghosts in - I'm just currently imagining a great copper tank with a porthole-style window to look in at them.

Almost like some weird washing machine...? With a protruding valve on one side (and a little near the top) in which the ghosts are inserted.

I'm having way too much fun with that thought, now I wanna write or draw something up for it. whee
