You don't, but if you apply for a student visa and want to work once you get to Japan, you most likely will need a separate permit. (It
may vary between city/prefecture, but I don't think it does. You definitely needed one when I lived in Kyoto and I
think people needed one when I lived in Tokyo.) I would ask whoever's coordinating your study abroad/exchange trip for help with this (the Japanese side, if possible).

I recieved mail from the university I plan to attend && they do allow students of the university to work after a specified time limit in Japan.
Of course, they know well enough students need the jobs to pay off tuition and rent. =3
