I am working on a word list, and picture book.
I wanted to know some of the first words people learned in hiragana and katakana. And maybe some pictures to go with them.

So like, good vocabuluary for begininers?
Well.. I learned a few words with every new kana character, way back when, and some very basics are things like o (tail), ue (up/above), etc. Then there's hoshi (star) and... well, if you want everyone's first words, it's probably either kawaii or neko. =__=
Would konnichiwa count?
And if I may ask, what's this for exactly? Self-study purposes, an online guide for starters, a picture book for children around the world?

Well, like the kind of stuff you first learn in any language, you could probably include some common animals, stuff around the house, family labels (mother, father, cousin, uncle, etc.), clothing names, food names ... things like that.

I learned all the characters of hiragana first then I learned basic sentences like my name, this is my father/mother/sister/brother, what day it was. Stuff like that.

I dug out a Japanese Learning program called Power Japanese. Learning Hiragana gives so good words for the symbols. I plan to make a list of them. I just need to know what form to put it in.

Konnichiwa. Sayonara. Arigatou.
That basically sums it up. =D

I distinctly remember that two of my first words in Japanese were oishii and sayonara. ^^

Seems like everyone chattin' here is a little distracted from the request at hand.
One last question, good words for begingers (konnichiwa, domo, mata, etc.) or easy, basic words (o, e, ee, iie, asobi, youbi, etc.)?

The most useful and basic things I learned starting off were greetings (good morning, hello, goodbye, etc...), answering 'yes' and 'no', colors, numbers, days of the week...just stuff that is easy to grasp.
