She wasn't sure what day it was. She had been silent and numb for the past who knows how long? The only time she made noise was when she sobbed at night. Her mommy hadn't come back yet.
Polly was almost certain she wouldn't be back ever again. She curled a little closer into herself, sniffling loudly as she hugged the charred Gator Boy doll to her chest. She hadn't liked the one that the lady in white and blue had brought her. It wasn't her Gator Boy.
Her Gator Boy made her remember her mommy. It was all she had left of her mommy. And--and-- She started to sniffle again, rubbing at her nose with her forearm. She had been a very bad girl...

Lily was angry. She had believed in that woman's wish for a child, and look what had happened! She would be far more loathe to grant wishes in the future, if this was the outcome!
"Selfish witch," Lily mumbled to herself, and pulled herself out of her well.
Slightly transparent at the best of times, Lily's hold on the world was tenuous at best. Only when her flowers surrounded her was she able to appear as clear as she had today, and Lily wondered what had led this child to this place as it was beneficial to the both of them.
Seeing the crying child, Lily hung back for a moment. What about her would make the girl-child believe in her, trust her? Lily wasn't sure that another female presence would make her uncomfortable, but she was afraid to scare the poor, shattered child.
"Polly," She whispered, despite herself.

Polly jerked, looking around for a long moment, but seeing nothing. "I'm sorry," she finally said, figuring some voice from the sky was going to yell at her. Or tell her she was bad, or something. She didn't know. She was so confused!
"Mommy didn't like me," she whispered. "I burnt the bed."

Lily concentrated on making herself opaque, knowing that her voice was not as comforting without a body to hold it.
Stepping out in to the open, she stood away from Polly, a small, worried frown on her face. She knew she didn't really look... real, her real appearance lost long ago. The facade she wore as a ghost was eternally beautiful, but she knew she hadn't appeared beautiful while alive. Whatever the reason, she knew her beauty was compelling, though probably not the comfort that Polly was crying for.
Lily wished she had broad, soft arms to wrap Polly in.
"I like you, Polly," Lily quietly replied, unwilling to approach the question of the burning yet. All in due time, Lily thought.

She sniffled again, a hint of a smile pulling hesitantly at her lips. "Ye--yeah?" she asked. It felt like a dream, really, with this half there, half not lady holding her. But she felt familiar. The little girl pulled up Gator Boy, showing it to the lady.
"This is Gator Boy," she told her. "He likes me, too. I burned him, but he stayed." Which was the most important thing to her at the moment.

Lily settled beside Polly, smoothing out her dress fretfully. She had wanted children, yes, but she had never realized how delicate they were.
Smiling at Polly, Lily mimed patting the Gator Boy's head, knowing that her hand would drift through it.
"He is a good friend to you, I think. He would stay with you through anything, even a burning bed."
Knowing that the problem of where Polly would stay would be brought up soon, Lily's mind whirled. Where in the cosmos could she place such a child, and how could she determine that she wouldn't be hurt AGAIN when she found a parent?

Somewhere on a small planet island a teenage boy was sticking his bare hand into a fire to pull out a flat rock they could cook on. He looked, astonishingly enough, a lot like gator boy.
"Uh huh!" Polly agreed. "He's my best friend!" But then there was Chris and Rory and Orli and-- She fell silent again, wondering if she would ever see any of them again, now that her mommy was gone...
