An explosion rocked the building to their right as Cartel Squad sprinted down W Capitol Drive heading east. Fire and debris rained on the soldiers from every angle. Miguel yelled to his squad "move! Get to the pelican!" It was only a ten meters away now, but every one of the Brute pack was behind them. As they began to pile in one by one spikes and plasma rained down on them. One of their guys went down, his ODST uniform failing to protect him from the Covenant onslaught. Fires burned through the buildings everywhere. It was a hell. Once they were all on Miguel sprinted inside just as Pelican began to lift off. "Everyone on and accounted for?!" The noise inside the pelican was immense as the thrusters roared, announcing their attempt at escape.

Ben quickly dove into the Pelican, Spikes trailing at his feet. Thinking quickly and in a hurried panic, he buckled himself in, and patted the guy next to him. "10 Ok!" he called. The line went down the list as everyone sounded off.
The feeling in his gut never seemed to settle as the Pelican rumbled off the ground, Brutes fell back into the distance and the skyline became visable out the back of the Pelican.
Ben was still panting, his nerves were on edge and his breath was hot and sticky as ir blew back at him with every huff.
"You alright bro?" he called to his brother, The Sergeant in the corner.

"Yeah, I'm good" he said to the Lance Corporal strapped in to the Pelican seat. A bead of sweat fell from his brown down through his helmet as the air in his suit began to recycle. The smoke was filtered and fresh cool air blew into his face. "Alright, Cartel! We're retreating under the orders of Major Nelson back to Santa Monica. We'll be in charge of-" "Sir!" Miguel turned around and looked at the ODST pointing to the city they were leaving. "Oh s**t..." He looked on in shock, gripping the handle he was holding tighter and tighter as a Scarab rounded the corner of tall buildings and looked their way. "HOLD ON!"

The light from the Scarab's "head" shot out, and lashed at the Pelican's topside, melting it, molding the pelicans topside out like a knife through hot butter. The metal was still white hot and boiling from the blast. Black smoke accumulated from the wound; and the bird began to plumit from the sky.
Ben could feel the G-Force's press against his stomach. He couldn't take this s**t anymore, his head became victum to the freefall and a sharp pain shot through his temple.
"Echo Zero-Zero-Seven-Nine, Ingle Nine Back MAYDAY MAYDAY, WE ARE GOINGDOWN!" He could hear the pilot scream from the cockpit.
"Sergeant..... HEY MIGUEL! Whaddya think?" He called to his brother from his seat.

Miguel had just enough time to look at Ben when he felt the impact. His body went flying towards the cockpit after the Pelican had nose dived it right into the intersection of W Summerland Ave and N Western Ave. The last thing he saw was his brother reaching for him and the dark smoke filled sky out of the Pelicans aft. Everything went black.

The smell of sulfer and smoke awoke Ben from his slumber. The sleep from his eyes clung to him as he tried to figure out where he was. His thoughts combind and the peices filled in after a moment. He was on the Pelican... and the Pelican was on the ground, back en in the air like a hanging ham in a market.
"Anderson? Silva? Fernandez?" he called out, but nobody answered. They were all slumped to the side. Loooking next to him, the Lieutenant, Lieutenant Myers, had his head slumped back, blood trickled down his head. Reminding Ben of rivers on a map flowing into some open space... This was not good.
Placing his rifle next to him, he slammed his fist against the harness to pop it openand was taken hold by gravity. He fell into the wall of the Pelican shoulder first. The pain nulled him, but he started to move all the same.
The Pelican troop bay was a scene of chaor, metal was up from the flooring, everything was just off where it should have been. But then he took a look at the seat at the end, closest to the door, and it was empty.
Quickly, Ben rounded his head around the corner to see his brother lying belly up, his head bleeding from the top. Ben thought the worst.
"MIGUEL!" He hopped down to the second door and kneeled at it brother's side. "ANSWER ME DAMNIT!" he checked for a pulse, he wasn't dead... Thank god. He began to slap him agianst the side of the faice gently. "Damnit boy, wake the ******** up! What would momma say?! WAKE UP DAMNIT!"

Slowly the darkness turned to a blurred reality. Sulfur, smoke, and charred flesh coerced his senses; a ringing in his ears slowly died away as he lifted his head. A sharp pane receded through his skull and his cheek as Ben slapped him across the face. "Damnit" he said in a low voice, "stop hitting me." His voice was choked and coarse. Slowly he sat up and look around at the carnage. "s**t..." he said placing his head between his knees, "how many?"

The tears stung is face as they began to surface. "Miguel... you b*****d." Ben gave a small smirk, but it slowly faded when his brother asked for thr death count.
"All but us." He said. His voicewas dull and grey like the sky above them.
"Can you move? We gotta get outta here."

"Yeah, I can move." He stood up and grasped the side of the Pelican's innards before looking around. "Gather ammo and tags, then we'll head for cover."
Miguel proceeded to reach for a BR55HB SR Battle Rifle and picked it up, slinging it over his shoulder.
There was no doubt in his mind that they were being tracked by Covenant. Quickly he climbed his way to the top of the Pelican's aft collecting ammunition for his Magnum as well as his Battle Rifle. He also grabbed a few grenades, along with five of the twelve tags of dead soldiers. While he glanced out of the Pelican and looked at the deserted city he quickly moved all the soldiers in the squad from ENLISTED to KIA.

Ben followed his younger brothers, grabbing 5 clips for his MA6C and 2 for his HE Pistol. He leaped to the side of the chair mounts and climped up the wall like a monkey. From there, he leaped up to the grip bar by the door, and hefted himself out into the cool breeze. He slid down the Aft side of the Peli and landed right at his brother's feet.
"Do we know where we are? Or what we're gonna do?" He asked, Checking his rifle and racking the bolt.
He sat on a rock, or the remains of a pilar and lookd at his brother as he contemplated.

"We head north west towards Santa Monica. From there we'll figure it out, try and get in touch with HIGHCOM" he said pointing toward the north. "Alright, let's move!" he said and started off with a trot. He thought he could hear the roar of the Chieftan in the distance, probably getting a whiff of the scorched flesh. Fires burned civilian cars, and a TV broad casted a news report.
"UNSC troops have been pulling out of Los Angeles after a struggle against he ruthless aliens. Casualties are estimated in the hundreds of thousands. UNSC Officials have also instated HAMMERDOWN on the area. All civilians have been evacuated to the North and South."
Miguel didn't hear the rest of the news broadcast as his ears filled with the roar of C709 Longsword-class Interceptors began their bombing runs on the immediate city not one kilometer from their position. Fire and explosions were everywhere destroying buildings and sentient life alike.

Ben tapped Migues on the shoulder away from the window of the corner store. He pointed to the bridge. "Miguel,if we take the bridge to the Harbor, the harbor trabels south past this s**t into Santa Monica. From there we can hook up with the rest of I-Company. An-" His sentance was cut off by a clatter down the alley.
Thinking fast, Ben grabbed his brothers harness and pulled him to the ground. He held up a finger to his lips and grabbed his rifle to scope around the corner.
3 Brutes were scavaging through the reckage of the Pelican, pucking apar his comerads and eating them as if they were tonights dinner...
"We need to move now Miguel...." Ben whispered. "Bridge?"

Miguel nodded his head and grabbed his rifle. He looked at the reflection of himself sitting on the ground with his back to the debris. He looked like an infant clutching a toy; a reminder of the innocence they had all lost. He looked up down the street at the brutes who were policing the Pelican, grabbing and throwing the dead bodies out. He wanted to hoist himself up and shoot the ******** in the face.
He controlled himself. "We'll move across the bridge and break for it, look for survivors."
He looked at Ben, "Ben, I think we're the last ones. News broad cast said troops were pullin' out."

Ben nodded, and went first.Grabbing his brother by the shoulder and almost draging him to his feat. Fear climbed into his head, he wanted out.
The beating of his feet against the pavement felt almost in slow motion. His heartbeat ran in his ears like a typewriter, typing to his mother back in Chicago about their deaths... if she wasnt dead herself.
He collapsed against the side of the building, back scraped up against it, rifle in hand, Miguel followed. He always laughed how his little brother was a few ranks ahead of him.
Looking back across the street, he could see the Brutes, but his eye also caught something else... the gas tank, leaking gas onto the pavemet. This could be their smokesignal.
"Miguel... I need a grenade." He said, sticking his hand infront of his brother but not turning away from the Pelican.
