Overall, I think the states still hold the balance of power over most peoples' daily lives, but the federal government is growing rapidly, as it has in fits and spurts since WWII.

its all about balance. I think the constitution is pretty clear about which duties belong to which.

It should be clear but via use of the commerce clause the goverment oversteps it boundries quite a bit

The system is set up so that the US Federal Government is "supreme" in its own way while the states are "supreme" in whatever the federal government leaves them. The problem is the areas do not have a finite line and so the power is left to the supreme court to decide.
