Personality - Nash is pretty much an all-around nice guy. He's been through quite a lot of bad things in his life but he tries not to dwell on them or let them get him down. He's well-traveled so he knows a lot about different things, but he doesn't flaunt it. He's very loyal to anyone he considers a friend (or more) and he also loves children.
He does, however, have his flaws. Nash has a temper and when it's roused, he can take a while to calm down again, often lashing out at those who have nothing to do with the real problem. Also, people sometimes have to quite literally spell things out for him letter by letter or he won't 'get' it sometimes. Though other times he seems to be fine - it's pretty random.
History - Nash was born into a race of mages who basically looked like humans. The mages lived on a planet called Relan in the midst of a far away galaxy that included several different planets - each one with its own species and beliefs.
Some time in the past, all of these planets knew about one another and the entire galaxy was embroiled in a huge civil war that would likely have destroyed all the worlds had it been left to continue. So the mages of Relan decided to separate all of the worlds through means of a spell that took away all knowledge of space travel and of the other planets and races. This spell was very powerful and very complicated - and ended up claiming the lives of many of the mages who were directly involved with it.
After the spell had been cast, the mages became overseers of a sort, keeping watch over all of the planets to ensure that none of them ever again discovered the others existed - for fear of starting another war. Things went on like this for several centuries and everything was calm ... though the mages were ever-vigilant in keeping their watch.
It was into this time period that Nash was born. He was actually left on the streets as a child and was adopted by a mage named Valen, the son of the head of the current Mage Council - those who governed Relan and kept the watch on the other planets. Usually it was unheard of for a child not of "pure" bloodlines to be trained in the higher magics reserved for nobles, but Valen saw great potential in Nash and so took him in and began to train him.
Then, when Nash was a teenager, disaster came to the galaxy ... in the form of invaders from outside. In point of fact, these invaders were humans from our galaxy - seeking resources as they had finally exhausted nearly all that the Earth had to offer. They began to pillage the planets one by one... and without any knowledge of space-travel, the different races of the planets could not even begin to fight back.
Most of the mages were in a panic at this point, not knowing what to do, how to protect all of the planets at once. There simply were not enough powerful mages to help. But Valen had ideas of his own. Against the Council's wishes, he decided that he would leave Relan and travel to each of the planets... gathering a small team of representatives from each planet and lifting the old spell from their minds - showing them the other planets and then asking them to go with him back to Relan and petition for an alliance between all the races.
Nash begged to go along, but Valen wouldn't let him, instead instructing the younger mage to stay on Relan and practice the latest thing that Valen had been teaching - namely, Gates. Gating was a way to get quickly from one place to another without the need of vehicles, forming a magical doorway through space that one could simply step through into elsewhere.
Angry at being left behind, Nash began experimenting with his Gating, finding and reading forbidden texts, trying out dangerous magics. And indeed... this proved disastrous for him. One of the experimental Gates that he build warped more than just distance... it also warped the very fabric of the world, sucking him in and dumping him into another dimension entirely.
And once there... Nash could not figure out how to get home again. He wandered for days, lost and upset, through the deep and dark jungles of an alien world - trying to avoid the large predators that made that world their home. These were large cats, about the size of a jaguar, but with wings... demonic-looking wings which they had somehow developed to fly and glide from tree to tree in the canopy of the jungles. The cats were marginally intelligent but highly aggressive and territorial, attacking any strange creatures they found in their realm.
Nash survived several of these attacks by sheer luck and stubbornness, eventually finding a small cave to hide out in while he still tried to find his way home. Until his luck ran out... again. For there were other dangers besides the cats here. In particular, large insects that were highly poisonous. One such, a type of spider, bit Nash while he was trying to gather food ... and the young mage knew that the bite would prove fatal if he didn't do something.
Desperate, he thought back again to the forbidden books that he had read back home, and determined to try one of the spells from them - a spell to steal the life force and immunities of another creature. For the cats seemed to be unaffected by the spiders, as he had seen one step into a nest of them before and then fly away again unharmed.
Already dizzy and getting weaker, Nash searched until he found a small cub of one cat - unguarded for some reason ... and took the young cat back to his cave. There, he tried the spell that he had read... but things didn't go exactly as planned. The young mage did, indeed, gain immunity to the bite but he also managed to fuse himself with the cat somehow - gaining the ears, tail, and wings.
Once he realized what had happened, Nash rather though of himself as a monster... and attempted to kill himself more than once. However, the cats also had enhanced healing abilities and as soon as Nash would pass out from loss of blood, his wounds would heal and he would wake up, still alive. At the time, he was far too upset and irrational to consider throwing himself out of a tree or some-such thing ... simply trying the same thing over and over again until he eventually decided ... that he would have to live. Even if he was a monster.
Soon after this, he actually managed to make a Gate work, but it did not lead home - instead going to a different place in that same dimension. But he had had quite enough of the jungle world and so jumped through.
Since then, that has pretty much been the story of his life over the past several years, jumping from place to place - always on the move and never really home. More recently, he's found himself on Gaia ... and actually started to build a life there.
