I am so bloody sick of people who want a plecostamus because they think it will clean their tank. And those who think they are poop eaters. And those who say they have alot of algae. PLECOS ARE CRAPPER FISH, NOT CLEANER FISH. THEY THEMSELVES POOP ALOT. PLECOS CANNOT LIVE ON JUST ALGAE, THEY DO NOT EAT POOP EITHER. THE REASON WHY YOU HAVE ALOT OF ALGAE WILL PROBABLY KILL YOUR PLECO!. In the wild plecos mainly eat leafy vegetation. They cannot survive on just algae, they need supplementation with algae wafers, spinach, cucumber, zucchini, shrimp pellets, driftwood/bog wood, and those dried algae sheets. A healthy aquarium isnt going to have that much algae.
I also want to hurt those who think that if they keep the pleco in a tiny tank it wont get any bigger. THAT IS THE SAME AS KEEPING A CHILD IN A CLOSET OR A LARGE BREED PUPPY IN THE CUBBARD UNDER THE BATHROOM SINK. Common plecos grow to 2 ft and should be allowed to do so. There are smaller species of plecostomus that are better suited to smaller tanks, they usually cost a little more but are well worth it. Bushynose plecos, and bulldog plecos only get 5 inches, while the clown pleco only gets about 3-4 inches.

Soon Plecos will be outlawed, here is a picture of a 4 lb pleco caught down in florida where they aren't native evil

Um, hi?

I think the biggest problem with pleco is that the petshop people don't give proper information on the fish they are selling.
If at all.
I have yet to find the person who asks the client in what aquarium size they are planning to keep their newly purchased goldfish and/or koi.
Many people don't warn new costumers of the potential danger a african ciclid poses to a community tank, or tell you that you can rarely keep female bettas together with the male, or that Angels and bettas don't mix in small aquariums.

I think most of the people who work in a petshop now a days don't know that much about fish, nor do they even care.
It's all about the money for them.

If more 'fish awareness' can be brought to them, they will be able to instruct the new comers to the hobby better, and thus lessen situations such as the pleco and countless other fish are found in.
It's a shame, because now many fish are basically just being mishandled, and the owners aren't even aware that they are basically committing animal cruelty.

at least, that's my view on it.

Yes i agree alot of the time it is true but i tell people and alot of people dont care, thats what my rant is about. Daily i get people who say "well he will only grow to the size of my tank", even after i tell them what really happens when you keep a large fish in a small tank.

Ugh, fish 'havers' talk2hand
But you are right. There are people that just don't care.
They don't respect the animal.
But it's not only fish. You see it happening with birds, hamsters, reptiles, even puppies and cats.
I've come across people who seriously believe that generally dogs don't get much older then 2 or 3 years.

I'm not sure if this is ignorance or carelessness, but I think that in our primary education a little or a lot more attention to nature and the worth of it is needed to ensure that the future generation in general will take better care of it.

Just because a small pet can't scream or tell you that something is wrong, doesn't mean you should neglect it and view it as just a disposable material possession or even toy.

Then again, what can be done to change mass mentality?
Refuse to sell? Take up the protest board and act out 300?
A small group against a million?
I'd love to believe a small group can make a difference, but I am at a loss as to how....

you know what i hate hearing the most?"It's just a fish.." it makes me want to flip out!! its sad to see some one walk out of the pet store with a bag full of gold fish and a little 1 gallon bowl.. or a betta and one of those BDT(betta death traps) ugh.if i ever got a pleco it would be a bristle nose for my 10 gallon, because they stay a reasonable size.

I know it drives me insane! why do people even buy fish if they don't care about them?

People usually do not take good enough care of their fish for it to ever get to that size sadly. I know someone that used to take their fish out and clean the tank with DAWN. >.>;;

It is just a fact people are stupid and impulsive.

I know plecos eat alage but people who say they eat POOP? LOL! I just found out some people thought that. omg.. rofl! rofl

And also, a fish may seem small at purchase, but can grow huge.

You wouldn't believe how many times I have given a watered down version of that rant at work. SO many people come in looking for a fish "to clean up after the other fish".

I saved myself the breath by writing down the dietary needs and that they are sensitive to poor water quality on the pleco tank with a paint marker. I get lots of people "WOW, i (we) did not know that!"

I also wrote down the goldfish tank rule on the goldfish tanks. I still get the douchebags who either dont know how to read or dont give a crap and still wanna put a goldfish in a tiny a** tank or a bowl. It really sucks that i cant refuse sales nor smash the bowl across their effin heads.
