Well here's my general cold care routine:

- add as much raw garlic to food as possible
- add as much cayenne pepper to food as possible.
- lots of ginger.

These food items are all stimulants. Garlic is well known for it's anti-fungal/bacterial properties. Cayenne pepper is said to help with your circulatory system and get the blood moving to purge sickness. Ginger is good for stomach ailments and nausea.

I have a garlic soup recipe somewhere that I love to make when I'm sick enough to need to make it (which doesn't happen that often, thank you good immune system)

A good tea recipe to have on hand is to boil about a 1 inch piece of ginger in some water to make tea, then to add some lemon juice and honey.

Also, if you have a sore throat/cough. Sucking on a spoonful of honey helps to coat your throat and ease the symptoms.

Anise is another good remedy for queasy/upset stomachs. If you can find hard candy anise drops, just suck on them to relieve the symptoms. Otherwise you can boil some seeds to make a tea.

Thank you very much! (:

Where do you learn all of this stuff? Can I pick up a book that has all sorts of these home remedies and herbal cures?
PostPosted: Mon Mar 17, 2008 2:12 pm

Mostly through my own research.

A great way to start is to google "natural remedy for ___" Or "natural toothpaste/shampoo/etc recipes"

I recently bought the farmer's almanac "traditional home remedies" book. The solutions offered in it are mostly anecdotal though. neutral

I'm sure there are some good books out there. I've been more concerned with buying farming themed books lately than health. Although, I do want to find one or two good natural health styled books for my own.

when I get sick, it always affects me in the throat and my nose gets blocked up. Whereas with the rest of my family, they get bad headaches. So everyone's different. But here's what I do.

boil water and make some green tea. I prefer gun powder tea, personally I find it tastes better and there's A LOT less packaging and waste. I use Twinings, just cause that's what my local grocery sells, it comes in a tin container which you can later reuse for just about anything.

Anywho moving on, I squeeze about half a lemon and throw in a bit of honey. Green tea is an anti-oxidant. "here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:

cancer
rheumatoid arthritis
high cholesterol levels
cariovascular disease
infection
impaired immune function

Lemon will kill any pathogenic bacteria and honey helps to soothe your throat.
If you want to stay awake, you can throw in some ginseng. If your looking to get a good rest, try to use decaff tea and I usually put in a bit of Gin. I love this drink and have it occasionally even if I'm not sick, just to prevent myself from actually getting sick.

The magic of nature!!

p.s. Lately I've taken to cleaning my skin with just hot water and a washcloth to scrub it. At least every other day I'll spritz on some acv (apple cider vinegar) mixed with tea tree oil and then wash my face with the hot water. I've noticed my skin clearing up. Well, there's a lot less of the nasty big stuff that leaves the red scarring marks. Still little bumps under the skin and blackheads (yay genetics. poo for acne at 25) but at least they aren't developing into big problems anymore.

Prevention is always a best medicine :3. I eat tons of garlic, and I've been sick about once in the past three or four years. Exercise helps boost your immune system.

I'm a fan of oregano oil. You can do capsules or oil. It's nasty stuff, but it seems to work well for me. (Either it kills it, or my body gets better so it doesn't have to taste the stuff anymore.)

Tea that kicks the a** of sore throats:
Mixture of licorice, ginger, cinnamon, rose hips, and flax seeds- about one teaspoon of an mixture of the first four, and another teaspoon of the flax seeds. Put them loose in a small saucepan with a large mug full of water, and simmer them for about 15 minutes. Then strain back into the mug (compost the herbs and flax seeds), mix in a bit of honey if you want, and drink it as soon as it's cool enough to not burn your mouth.

Ginger alone (fresh diced or dried chips, simmered 15 minutes at least) is also an excellent cure for stomach upset. Very strong plain peppermint tea is also good for stomach upset. Generally I use ginger for illness-induced stomach problems and peppermint for anxiety-induced nausea.

I can't do the raw garlic or cayenne thing for colds- they both give me a really upset stomach and the cayenne leaves my mouth in pain for hours besides (I have, like, NO tolerance for capsacin or however the hell you spell the name of that chemical) . I'll happily eat COOKED garlic by the head, but raw just doesn't sit well in my stomach.

Congestion cure:
You will need a big saucepan, a towel, and a thick hankerchief or two or lots of tissues. Put about an inch of water in the saucepan, put on the lid, and bring to a boil. Now, with the lid still on the pot, move it to somewhere you can easily sit an lean over it- I use the coffee table next to a comfortable couch. Lean almost over the pot (not quite, you should be slighty offset), take the lid off, and throw the towel over your head so that you make a sort of tent with the pot and your head- the point is to be breathing in the steam without burning yourself. Breathe under the steam-tent for a couple minutes or so, then duck your head out, blow your nose, and take a breath of that lovely cool non-steam air wink Then back into the steam tent. Repeat until the water isn't steaming enough or you can't stand to continue. This generally gives me several hours of relief from stuffy nose.

I've done the head-under-towel-over-steam thing many a time. It's quite good for clearing out your sinuses and other mucus gunked around in your head. That is until it builds back up and you need another steam session.

Toss in some eucalyptus leaves and you have a remedy that's better than vapor rub.

I've done that too! It seriously works after about 30 minutes, and it quite relaxing O_O

As for natural teas and remedies, if you live in the South East of the US, make sure you look for a Sevenanda Store, its an all natural grocer and has A LOT of natural beauty and health supplies. Its the Kroger of natural foods and things ^__^

Mmm... Aloe.. whee I love Aloe vera.

When eaten, both the dried gel and outside skin are very strong laxatives. (I've never tried it, but from what I hear I wouldn't recommend ever eating it unless you really need it)

Aloe vera juice has a multitude of antioxidants and is a great toxin cleanser, it also is commonly used in weight loss diets/drinks.

(Most commonly) The fresh aloe vera flesh can be used for burns or as a good first aid for minor cuts and scrapes. It's soothing and can help quell pain quickly. It also cleanses the skin and makes for a good acne treatment and (from what I hear) a refreshing lip balm.

Rosemary 4laugh

I spent a couple of weeks researching rosemary after I bought a plant of it..

Rosemary is high in iron, calcium, and vitamin B6. It also contains a moderate amount of antioxidants, slightly less (I think) than regular tea leaves.

Rosemary yields its properties best when infused with spirits (alcohol) but is still strong enough to do good when made into a tea.

Rosemary has a ton of uses eek The most useful, in my opinion, are as follows:

Anti-arthritic
It wards off moths
When made into a tincture, is a mild astringent (Great for those with sensitive skin)
Helps alleviate headaches from usual causes: stress, pressure on the head, head sickness, things like that.
antiseptic (Rosemary oil, when diluted with water, makes a good antibacterial cleaner)
Can correct low blood pressure
When applied topically, it stimulates hair follices
When burned along with juniper berries it's used as a disinfectant where people with contagious sickness are.
It's said to help stimulate the mind and improve memory
Helps mestrual problems and liver dysfunction
Stimulates circulation

It's also said to remove or alleviate the affects of paralysis when ingested regularly over a period of time eek Though I'm not sure if I believe that...

"The young tops, leaves and flowers can be made into an infusion, called Rosemary Tea, which, taken warm, is a good remedy for removing headache, colic, colds and nervous diseases, care being taken to prevent the escape of steam during its preparation. It will relieve nervous depression. A conserve, made by beating up the freshly gathered tops with three times their weight of sugar, is said to have the same effect."

A quick bite about dandelions

They're good for helping headaches and sore throats and also are very good at cleansing the liver, so they're a prime relief for a hangover xd

ooh! ooh!

I have dandelion tea. I forget the brand but it's organic. Only I'm not a big tea drinker so I don't drink it regularly (like you should) to detox my liver.

It's a very strong taste almost like coffee in that it's slightly bitter. I boil some ginger in water and then use that water to make the tea and it tastes better.

Ginger is my fav!

I have a pretty sensitive stomach so I always have some form of ginger around.

Yogi Tea makes a great ginger tea. They also make other fantastic teas.
