I love to read books like Midnight pearls and Before Midnight. Both of wich are retelling of some very popular fairy tales. Like Cinderella and the Little Mermaid. both are very good books you should try them out.

Mercedes Lackey's Elemental Masters series is a collection of retellings. Robin McKinley has also done some cool ones (I love her Beauty). Shannon Hale's Goose Girl is another one, as is Charles de Lint's Jack the Giant-Killer (alas, I think it's out of print).

I just re-read Robin McKinley's Spindle's End. Sigh. So cool. It's a variation of Sleeping Beauty. I'm going to have to find my copy of Deerskin by her now and re-read that one.

Snow White and Red Rose by Patricia C. Wrede is a good retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tell of the same title. I finished it today and i loved it. It even includes the original within it. It's cool.

I've read that story as well. I loved it entirely. Patricia C. Wrede has a totally whimsical way of writing fantasy and her short stories always a pleasure to read and re-read.

I think Wrede's Snow White and Rose Red and de Lint's Jack the Giant-Killer were part of a series of fairy tales varients published many, many years ago. Jane Yolen wrote Briar Rose for that series.

That sounds interesting. I'd like to know more about that series of publications.

I just realised that the story I thought was Snow White and Red Rose was in fact something else - a short story called Cruel Sisters by the same author. My memory betrayed me! blaugh

Now I'll have to go looking for the real story so that I can say I read it.

Just did some digging: The Fairy Tales series, published by Tor Books.

Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia C. Wrede, published 1989.

The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars by Steven Brust, published 1987.

Briar Rose by Jane Yolen, published 1992.

Tam Lin by Pamela Dean, published 1991.

The Nightingale by Kara Dalkey.

Jack the Giant-Killer by Charles de Lint. Republished with Drink Down the Moon in Jack of Kinrowan in paperback 1995.

White as Snow by Tanith Lee, published 2000.

Fitcher's Brides by Gregory Frost, published 2002. (Bluebeard variant)

The last book on the list was the last of the series. Hope this helps!
