So I'm working on my little novel-thing. And there's a vampire in it.
I realized this two paragraphs in, and then was like "right, I need to do some research before going on."
So I did some research. I developed a theory that there are two types of vampires, bloodsucking evil ones and angsty self-restraining 'hot' ones. I scrapped it. I stopped researching and just read the vampire stories, which was fun but generally unhelpful.
Then I started thinking. What is vampirism, exactly? Blood-sucking, right? But some of the myths that vampires come from are nary so limited or specific. There are bald fat men who go to women in the middle of the night and instead of doing traditional "I vant to drink your blood" speech they drink the unfortunate victim's /milk/. That's right. You heard me. Sometimes the vampires eat the flesh as well.
So really vampirism is just like... being a parasite? But more than that, because in most vampire stories there's also the element that, by taking something from the victim, it is possible for the vampire to make the victim another vampire. Which is not something your everyday parasite does. And even that quality isn't universal to all things that have been called vampires everywhere (everywhere in literature, anyway.)
...discuss? Frankly I need help, I'm not totally sure where to go with poor, neglected, *cough* evil, blood-sucking* Gabriel.

gonk We're not that baaad. Really. We're really quite friendly.
Anyway, I'd go for the parasitic route. Go for the traditional bloodsucker. It's an accepted view, and although the cannibalism gives an edge, it can also scare away potential readers, depending on the audience you want to reach. Besides, the bloodsucking thing can be sexy, if you're in to that kind of thing, especially if this Gabriel is particularly noble or sexy. Perfect for the teenage girl set.
As far as becoming a vampire, my family's always had this story about how when a vampire drinks your blood, it doesn't kill you. But then again, you're not really alive, either. You're pretty much doomed to walk the earth forever in search of what you lost--your humanity.
And there's this anime, Trinity Blood. It's got some good view points.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. Post some story bits soon, I'd love to read it! <3

biggrin Actually chapter one is already up in the Works in Progress subforum. Anyhow, yeah, he's definitely a bloodsucker and there IS a teenage girl involved - but she's not quite the "omg sexy vampires!" type. More on that later, haha. Hmm. That's an interesting take on what exactly happens after you're bitten - not one I'd heard before, either. Hmm...

I take her word for it. She is, after all, a vampy. It's why she's so tiny. ><

o0o0o... we all talking about vampires? the creatures I idolize? ask me anything, i'm the expert. i have a volume of trinity blood, but i found it a bit to cliche for my tastes. (lots of violence and stuff from the bible and plastic characters and overused themes) one vampire manga i reccommend reading is Vampire Knight, from Shojo Beat. it portrays the vampires as beasts, AND people with real emotions. it's a bit dark and gloomy in places, but there's tidbits of humour squished in there. i think, to have a vampire as a main character, you have to make them at least a bit likeable. to do that, you have to make them a bit more than a 'parasite', and give them 'human' and 'understandable' emotions. and yes, the vampires are ALL hot and sexy, which adds to the humour.(in the manga) another book which gives the bloodsuckers emotions and a meaning to life is "interview with a vampire" it's got some very good viewpoints, including the theory that the vampires are the angels of death and give death to the suffering people who wish it most. there are tons of vampire books and movies out there, including twilight, salem's lot, Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak, Anne Rice's Vampire chronicles, 30 days of Night, the Blade and Underworld Trilogies, the Lost Boys, and of course, Dracula. What you really need to do is create your OWN version of a vampire, and what makes him a Vampire. if you don't, your creation will just blend in with the hundreds of other vampires out there. you don't need to be accurate; the Vampire is a figment of our imagination anyway. take an aspect from the parasite, the sexiness, the angel of death, and the bloodthirsty cannibal, and you could have something. just make him relatable, and you have a winner. hope i didn't ramble on too long. XD i love vampires, what can i say. -sakura

Basically it seems to me that a vampire can be categorized as a being that needs to feed on the energy of another being.
Personally, what I see very little of and wish to incorporate in at least one story is the idea of a psychic vampire.. one that feeds directly on psychic energy instead of blood.
So.. basically what I'm saying is that the idea of a vampire can be experimented with quite a bit so not all that much research is needed. It would probably actually be better to defy the conventional idea of vampires so the story is not written off quite so quickly by those who don't have a special interest in vampire fiction.

Mm. See, that's specifically interesting for my particular thing because the vampire in my story feeds off plotlines - he gains power from following the accepted paths of stories.
More on that in chapter two, haha.

My apologies for making so general a statement, guess thats what I get for only reading the first post before responding.. and not checking the date on that post either sweatdrop EDIT: Also, that little bit of sarcasm just gave me a great idea.. I'll have to try and remember to write a story based on that...

What about the vampires of society? The dredges of our people who just feed off of our government? People who do nothing but consume and not give back.

I wouldn't call myself an expert on vamps, but I do have a long running novel on them. >_> Some day, it'll get published but that is so not my point.
Anwhosit, Sakura is right. The vampire is your creation. Make it what you want. Take a piece from someone else and warp it to your liking. If it's the main character, make them relatble and likable. It it's the bad guy, don't (unless your going for angst). I've been working on my novel for. . . over two years (oh how times flies) and I'm still developing my vamps. . . mostly because I just smooshed a bunch of my stories into one realm and am thusly adjusting things. ._.
@Nihilistic: >.< I have psychic vamps. Two distinct kinds, actually, and a few other not so distinct ones. <3 I lurv them.

Make it up. That's what I'm doing for my novel. I'm chaging the way we see vampires and the way we change from human into vampire but still keeping the same basic stuff. Like -their pale (almost no way around that) - the suck blood (preferably out of humans but some use animals as prey) -incredibly good looking Etc etc. Since your the author you have certain licenses on such small things to changes. That's what I'm doing.
