Let's talk anti-stink...

For the longest time I've been trying to find the best deodorant. I switched pretty early on to tom's-of-maine and was happy until they mucked with the formula and I started breaking out in rashes under my arm.

Not pleasant.

I tried other natural brands, but they didn't work as well. Some were downright skunky. gross.

Finally I got fed up and started using straight up baking soda. This worked great for a while. But long term use can dry out the skin and build up. So I mixed in some cornstarch to make more of a deodorant powder type deal. Swell! Some days I came home at the end of the nigh and would smell my armpits. There was an odor but it wasn't noticeable and within the boundries of acceptance.

Then I just got lazy. Powder is a little messy blah blah. I finally picked up tiny container of those crystal salt deodorant sticks. The solid ones, not the liquid roll-on.

Well I'm sold! No irritation and it lasts all day with no smell. This stuff is awesome. And from what I hear the salt crystal lasts a wicked long time as well.

So yeah. That's my progress and where I'm at. Like seriously even in the morning when you wake up there's no smell. It works super long.

So share & discuss.

If anyone's interested the mixture I was making was 50% baking soda and 50% cornstarch.

The salt stick sounds like it'll burn if I put in on after I shave.
Does it?

surprisingly no. I got more irritation using baking soda under my arms than the salt crystal.

I can find these sticks of wonder at someplace like Whole Foods, yes?

I have an amazingly nose-gasm deoderant that I use, but it's probably not animal friendly. As soon as it's finished, I'm going to switch to these organic salt crystals of yours. (:

Oh, and do you have any pointers regarding toothpaste? My mom keeps buying me extra tubes of Colgate that I don't want. I want stuff that is organic and animal friendly. D:<

And shampoo and conditioner?

I've actually never shopped green before. I need to start RIGHTNOW.

Yeah I bought mine at whole foods actually.

For toothpaste I used my own blend of baking soda, salt, and sage all processed together into a powder. It worked pretty good. Occasionally rinsing my mouth with hydrogen peroxide helped to eat up all the yucky bacteria. (which i still do)

However I got worried about wearing my tooth enamel by using the baking soda blend on a regular basis. (it's something you can look up and decide for yourself) I actually found this toothpaste at whole foods called Peelu for around the same price as a tom's of maine brand 3.49-ish. It claims to be non-abrasive and I haven't had any problems with it yet. I recently saw that whole foods has neem oil toothpaste but it's $7 a tube!

As for shampoo, I've tried alot of different methods and recipes. Most weren't sucessful. I've tried the no-poo method (again with the baking soda). A great clarifying rinse that I've found is to use about 1-2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to 1-2 cups of water.

Currently I'm using Lush brand shampoo bars and they work really well. I also have avalon organic's brand mango conditioner (It's almost gone and I probably won't buy it again) and a nature's gate conditioning hair mask (that i got on clearance for $1)

Thank you so much (:

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, and although I'm grounded, I'm pretty sure I can make a stop by Whole Foods and snoop around while I'm still out.

Did you ever take that trip to whole foods?

Yes I did (:

I went the other day and I bought that deoderant. I must say that I am very impressed! I didn't smell like anything when I came home. It confuses me that people will waste chemicals on something that works only sort of well when they can get something completely natural that works amazingly well. Like, when I get home from whatever, my armpits usually smell like my deoderant and body sweat, but now it just smells like dry skin.

Thank you so much for the recommendation! (:

I may give one of these a try when I'm done with my stick. I'm really shy, so when I get shy I tend to sweat a bit, which really sucks, because then I get even shier wondering if I smell bad or not.

I'm glad Toasty!

Even on days where it's long and busy at work, when I get home I'll notice a faint scent from sweat and whatnot but nothing offensive at all.

Well worth the money imo.

You might want to check those sticks for alumina. The crystals used to have aluminum salts, and aluminum is a metal that builds up in the body. Metals in the body are not a good thing.

I do the baking soda thing myself, with a couple of drops of essential oil of lavender added, or some dried lavender leaves from the plants in the garden. If you use a sugar shaker for your dispenser, most of the time the leaves just stay in it.

I used to do baking soda, but it would build up after a while and really irritate the skin under my arms. Mixing baking soda with cornstarch cut down on the problem but I needed a different solution.

I did check the label and it lists natural mineral salts (ammonium alum). neutral

I'll keep using it until it's gone but I guess it's time to better research the crystal deodorants.

I use a crystal rock as well. I've had mine for years. I'm unfortunately a naturally sweaty person sweatdrop , but rarely smell. When I was a teen and young adult, I was very worried about smells and any wetness that I would layer on the Secret, Mitchell, you name it.

I've noticed that it really depends on what I eat as well.

I have a Kiss My Face roll on deodorant with a light smell that I have in my purse just in case. (I'm such a worry wort.)

Toasty Marshmallow
I'm a big fan of the anise flavoured Natures Gate (found at Whole Foods). Mint gives me a headache, so I need to stay away from it. Last time I went to the dentist, he asked what I was using, and when I told him, he was very surprised. I guess he didn't think natural stuff could actually work. I've even got my boyfriend to switch.

I generally use a spritz of witch hazel and then some baking soda... when I use anything at all sweatdrop Most kinds of deodorant give me a rash gonk

Hey, I'm a cross between a hippy and a computer geek, I am entitled to smell sweaty. xd (Seriously, though, I find that washing frequently- quickie spongebaths in winter, 2-minute cool showers twice a day or even more often if I can manage it in summer- works better for me than deodorant).
