My fiance and I have been talking about birth control lately. Does anyone have any personal advice on what they think is best? I've been on the pill for awhile for health reasons, but am basically terrified of getting pregnant once he and I are married (we are both virgins). I don't want children anytime soon, and honestly I'm not sure if I ever will. My fiance and I have talked about surgery options but have decided we don't want to cross that bridge until we are completely sure of our choices about having children.

glad i got back on to the fourms..

we recently and FINALY got on birth control after nearly a year of intemacey.. and a lucky no suprise year that was..

now i have been through a few alriedy.. 2 of which i started for my mom way before i was sexualy active cus she though 2 periods a year was werid.. no.

anyways.. The Pill.. old fashioned and the lest expensive.. you MUST take this every day at the same time or it wont work at all.. and miss a time or skip a day... ohhh youll feel like vomit..

The Patch.. good for most, its a weekly regiment.. 1 week all on either on your stomic, back or shoulder (you were 3 patches a month and then one month off) but it makes u look like your quiting smokeing.. and with me.. i had a bad reaction to the glue so i cant do that anymore.

The shot (lasts 3 months.. ) in ur butt.. basicly it.. but you have to see ur doctor every time

Right now im enjoying the nuva ring.. ITS AMASING.. i dont feel it at all... easy to put in. leave in for 3 weeks take out for one. it sits high up right near your uterius, so one you dont feal it.. and the majory of men dont eather.. even if it happend to pop out wash it in cold water
just awesome.. i highly recomend it.. since ive been enjoying it since monday ^_^ hope this helps

Ah, I was actually looking at looking into the nuva ring. Since I'm only on the pill right now for medical reasons it isn't so big a deal if I don't take it at the same time everyday and yadda, yadda... I like the idea of the nuva ring, it seems nice and simple.

I take the pill. It's been effective. Thank God. Don't get me wrong. I love my kids but I'm too old to have more!

I definitely don't recommend the shot. It's too effective. . .being on it for too long can actually lead to infertility. Also, once you've been on it for any amount of time, it takes a long time for your body to readjust so that you can become pregnant if you so choose to.

I was on the pill for two years. It worked for me. Plus I kind of miss the added benefits that you get from being on it: healthier skin, a period like clockwork, etc.

Good luck with your decision!

I actually have Implanon for birth control. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have good insurance because it's expensive. (I only got it while I was still on my parents' insurance.) Basically they insert a little rod into your arm, right under your skin. Sounds painful, I know! BUT it lasts for 3 years. I figure it saves money, too instead of paying $20 a month EVERY month. That adds up! (I used to be on the pill, so I know.) But I love it. I don't have to remember about taking pills or that panic of "Oops! I forgot to buy more!!!!"

@Lady Catalina
If you don't mind me asking...

Did Implanon give you issues with your period? I've heard about it sending it out of wack.

No I don't mind at all. At first, yes it was off. It wasn't heavier, but it wasn't my normal schedule. Now it's better and on schedule. It took probably a month to be back on track. (And lighter, too! Yay!) My Doctor said that women usually have lighter period or "spot" with it.

I use the pill. I get it free from this place called the Annex near my house. So far it is the ONLY pill i can swallow. My period has always came on the same day of the week since i started it in October. And it is less...though at times seems like it is near the end..but not. so i have to wash more, if you know what i mean.

It has worked great so far. i can go there until im 25 for BC. But all my friends take the shot. They have noticed weight gain and lack of weight loss since starting the shot.

I forget things very easily..so I'm surprised that i have only forgotten to take it once. (Good thing i don't see David often..it didn't interfier with our happy fun time whee )

hm..must get to thine Annex for a refill soon.... ninja

I'm about to start my third month on the pill and my period is like it's the first day for the whole week(just a smear). I haven't noted much improvement in my skin, myabe it's just not yet.

it's alot esier than condoms but when your used to a certain amount of sensitivity with the condoms and then you dont use them.... it takes some adjusting.

but if you may not want to have kids for up to five years the IUD works good I hear. the pill is more if you want to have the ability to concieve again soon, but the IUD is inserted into the uterus and can stay in for 5 years or taken out sooner if needbe.

hope it helps

Don't do that patch....unless they redid their formula or whatever, it was getting lots of girls sick and I found it very annoying cuz it didn't stick well for me and I was always paranoid.

Nuvo ring sound real cool and what I'd get if I was on birth control.

My husband and I do natural family planning which is kind of like the rhythm method that the catholic church "sponsors", each day I chart my temp and body signs and fluids. You avoid days when you're most fertile and go at it the rest of the time. It's risky if you're not careful, but we've been on it for over a year now and there's been no scares. And if we're randy and unsure, then we use a condom. We're not doing it for religious reasons, so that why we still uses condoms every now and then, but I just like not having to worry about a pill/shot/whatever.

i really comind you on that, it sounds way to risky for me. If never had a normal menstral cycle so its 10 times as hard for me to even know if i was prengent other than blowing through about 20 tests. Typicly i have 2 to 4 a year.. doctor says its ok. lucky i guess. but even my god sister gave me the hits such and white discharge and such to clue you in on your fretility... before i got birthcontrol.. my husband used the pull out meathod.. risky risky, but had no scares.

Earlier in this thread, I condoned the use of the pill . . . one thing that I failed to mention is the after-effects you may experience after going OFF of the pill. I quit the pill 11 months ago, last May, and my cycle still has not learned to self-regulate. I've gone anywhere from three weeks between periods to four months and my periods have been anywhere from five days to six weeks in length. I think this may be a risk with any type of birth control though. After your body depends on an alternate source of hormones to regulate your cycle, it's hard for it to learn to depend on itself again after you quit taking it. Good luck!

I'm on the pill, originally to help regulate my period but now I use it more to deter pregnancies. My fiancee has agreed to get a vasectomy after we get married, but I'll probably stay on the pill for the same reasons I started taking it in the first place. Luckily, we live in Canada so we don't need to worry about the cost of the surgery.
