The sun was low in the horizon, putting whispers of night into the atmosphere surrounding the Cirque trailers. Of course, this hardly meant that the workers of the Cirque were preparing for bed. Oh no, if anything else it was after dark that the true 'show' began. Some began to practice their acts, some continued with work while others fell into drinking or other means of entertainment. Tables were cleared and card games laid out, bottles of booze were pulled out from the cupboards and the raucous sound of laughter soon echoed from various trailers and clearings throughout the entirety of the compound.

A few did, however, continue to work. While others continued cleaning cages and fixing broken gears, however, Aemilia was practicing her act. Or, rather, practicing her abilities. She had plans for her act, and that involved pushing her talents to limits she had not yet tested. Standing before a handful of cages that held a few of the animals used at the circus, she chose a beast that was a tad less formidable in size then her eventual conquest; the elephant. For now, she decided upon a horse that was tethered off to one side. She didn't need it to be moved, but she appreciated that it was easily accessed. Fortunately, she held no fear for a beast that she had only recently learned the name of.

Striding towards the stallion, she pushed up her sleeves and held out a hand. Could she really do this? The feel of her hand upon the equine's forehead made the beast do a slight side-jig, but he soon steadied beneath her as she took calm, deep breaths. She'd made small creatures disappear and herself, but never something so significantly larger than her - and a living, breathing, moving thing. Moving things were more difficult, but she had to push herself. In a few moments, her brow furrowed as the horse suddenly disappeared. To anyone standing around her, they would have seen the grey dappled stallion simply blink from existance and it appeared as if the girl was resting her hand on air. Unfortunately, the horse didn't appreciate how long her hand remained there and he was not a patient boy anyway. With a squeal and snap of his teeth, he pulled from her touch and lunged at her. He, of course, immediately became visible when her fingers were no longer touching his pelt and Aemi narrowly avoided getting a shoulder bit into.

She had, however, succeeded. And she had thought the horse would simply cease to be if she were no longer touching him, would be invisible until she was able to find him again and fix it. No, instead he had reappeared as if nothing had ever happened. Perhaps it was her concentration on the light around him rather than the animal itself, but her thoughts were jolted once again when the beast suddenly lunged forward with his teeth chomping. He caught a bit of her sleeve, but the fabric (dusty and worn) gave way and he only pulled away a scrap. Aemilia did not need another warning and she quickly scrambled backwards. Evil creature! She was actually still in reach of flailing hooves, but for the moment he appeared content to simply glower at her and pound his hooves.

___Rasui had always had a romantic love-affair with the idea of horseflesh. They were strong, powerful, valiant, and loyal. Really just a very large puppy-dog. He remembered the small quick horses at home, and the magnificent thoroughbred races that were held. The horse was a God in its own right, and worshiped all the same. Tears shed whenever a victory or fall took place, no matter if they were rivals or companions. The horse was the most magnificent of all the animal kingdom, in his opinion, and his very favourite. Fine-boned Arabians, swift Thoroughbreds, rough'n'tumble Quarterhorses and spiritual Mustangs from the wilds of a long-forgotten America. In the few wide-open spaces that had been preserved in his dying planet earth, they were given the wilderness once more.

___When Rasui had discovered that Cirque had its own stables and a training ground, he almost leapt out of his skin in excitement. Quickly he had searched it out and found the round corral filled with rust-coloured sand. The stalls were brimming with the beautiful creatures, soft eyes, delicate noses, and naughty teeth. Each one, each breed, each colour, he felt it was all too good to be true. Rasui found it hard to contain himself and wrapped his arms around the long face of the nearest animal, breathing in its salty and natural scent. The peace was shattered however, by a high-pitched female shriek, or perhaps it was a horses high whinny. His heart jumped, someone was in trouble, and before anyone knew it he pounded out of the stableyard and to the corral.

___A very large, very unhappy horse stood near the middle, with a small girl victim to its rambunctious ways. Pulling himself up and hoisting over the wooden fencing, Rasui landed heavily yet gracefully in the sand and sped over to the animal. With a large hand he reached out while dodging damaging hooves, and wrapped the reins tightly. The animal reared, angry at this human for challenging its authority, and Rasui dug his heels in to pull it taught.
___"Be good ... be good." Softly the man whispered to the unhappy creature, a bit of his British accent coming through the heavy Egyptian rumble of his voice. The horse wheeled, trying to get the man off him but Rasui played dead weight, and let the horse try to shake around. As the stallion finally calmed down, Rasui tentatively reached a palm out, allowing the animal to nose him carefully. Animals didn't like being touched unless they had a chance to inspect you first. The horse nickered quietly, and the man leaned slightly and let a warm breath wash over the flared nostrils. It needed to know him. Gradually its breathing slowed, and finally dropped a hip in complete relaxation. Rasui could now turn his attention to the young lady.
___"Are you hurt?" He questioned, smiling at her charmingly, almost completely oblivious to anything else besides the horse.

If anything, Aemilia had not intended on startling to horse into dangerous ground. She hadn't thought the beast would react like that, having only seen them in the ring or being led about. She had never encountered the beast on her own, but being fearless in the face of new aquaintances, she'd bounded forward nevertheless. There had been, however, a moment of sharp fear in her belly as the horse had snapped it's teeth and waved its glinting hooves. She had thought they were herbivores! What was this - baring its teeth and acting as if it might skin her alive? Wide-eyed and unhappy, she had not been expecting the large man to come swooping from no where to settle the horse.

In truth, she had no idea what he was doing at all to the beast. She watched him, taking in his every move so that she might mimic it later if need be. She was no where near as big as this gentleman - he was huge in comparison! - but she gauged her strength to be just as well, if not more, should she need to use it. Being a dead weight would not be so easy, but if she stuck her heels in and held tight, she might be able to do something of the same technique. Her mind was always taking in information, learning how to cope with the situations she found herself in. Often times she stumbled, but she would still try. Watching as the horse took in the man's smell, she marked that as a method to calm the animal down as well. It appeared completely at ease now, a much better mood, in her opinion.

Now that he was calm, she could take in the form of her 'hero'. He had spoken with a tad British accent; not quite as strong as Charlot, but he hadn't exactly said much so perhaps that could still be proven wrong. There was a gruff undertone that she couldn't quite label, but it wasn't so pressing. His skin was a bit darker than her own, not much, but not darker than Hazina and even so, a different hue. He looked magnificently intimidating, all dark features and bulk. Not to mention how he had calmed the stallion so quickly! His expression caused her own features to lighten in an appreciative smile as she steadied herself on her feet and brush off her shirt. "I'm alright, thank you." She noticed his attentiveness to the horse and inquiried, "I thought they ate plants?"

___Rasui laughed, loudly, his voice ringing with joy. It was the kind of laughter that didn't make you feel small because it seemed it was directed at you, but more because of the pleasure and happiness it brought to the inner glow. She was small, and seemed quite sweet.
___"Of course they eat plants." He said with a broad smile, his bright green eyes twinkling at her. "But if you frighten or upset any animal, they will do whatever possible to discourage you." He motioned with a finger to the small tear in her clothing. "That has happened to me many times before, except most of the time I wasn't fast enough and suffered a nasty bruise." He chuckled. Rasui had been kicked, thrown, bitten, and crushed by these creatures he adored, but he had no resentment whatsoever. It was in any nature of an animal which lived and breathed.

___He reached up and smoothed his facial hair, bringing thumb and forefinger down the carefully tailored mustache to his goatee and trimmed beard. Rasui often did that when he was regarding something, or someone. His white teeth flashed at her in a gentle smile.
___"What on earth were you trying to do?"

His laughter caused her smile to broaden, lips curling upwards and bringing out the dimples in her cheeks. She certainly felt small next to this man. Everything about him was larger than life, and yet she wasn't frightened. He was definitely intimidating, as stated previously, but he was not something to be feared quite yet. Of course, the horse had lulled her into its trust so perhaps this horse-tamer could do so as well. She wouldn't put it past him, but she wouldn't hold it against him, either.

Whether he had meant to or not, his instruction made her skin flare with embarrassment. Pink hued her cheeks but she quickly faltered into a response, "Oh. I 'adn't known. I.. 'aven't exactly spen' much time with... 'orses." She nodded towards the animal, "Or anythin'. Th'tigers when I clean their cages, but I don' get t'touch them." She wiped her palm on her shirt absently, the same hand that had touched the horse only moments before. She felt better knowing the same had happened to him a few times, and now, at least, she knew how to react the next time.

His question, however, was a little more difficult to answer. She certainly didn't feel up to just reaching for the horse again quite yet, so she couldn't show him unless she explained it first. Shifting from one foot to the other, she went for the most blunt response, "Make 'im dis'pear. It worked, aschully, but he got startled."

___"Tigers, eh." Rasui smiled at her. "Big old brutes aren't they? Nice to watch, but not so much to be part of their snacktime." He laughed again. "Never really been around horses?" The man seemed almost appalled by the idea. "Well get over here then!" His large frame swept her up into his arms and right into the creature's nose. "See, he likes you!" Rasui clapped her on the back proudly as she stared the thousand-pounder down. At her comment on trying to make it disappear, he frowned with slight bemused patience.
___"Disappear? Like close your eyes I can't see you, you can't see me disappear?" He teased. "Playing peek-a-boo with the animals, are we?" Rasui winked at her and grinned. The sun was setting, and instinctively he held her just a little bit closer as the cold began to set in. Beautiful colours, like a prelude to a night-time symphony. When they were between worlds, Rasui really had no idea where the caravan was. It looked almost warped between spaces, and you couldn't go anywhere except to the edge of the camp before it dropped off. Where it went to, he didn't want to risk his neck to find out.

"They're beautiful." She mused, but nodded in agreement nevertheless, "Aye. Mos' of the time they can' see me, so I'm outta 'arms way." He wouldn't understand unless she showed him, she knew. People didn't seem to react all that well when they saw her do such things out of the ring. Hazina had thought some strange things of her, and generally it startled people out of their wits. When she was suddenly swept by a bulky arm towards the animal that had moments ago attempted to eat her, she gave a bit of a squeak and gripped his forearm with one hand apprehensively. The stallion didn't seem all that ready to bite her... yet. Her mix-matched eyes, round and unsure, glanced up at the stranger with a nervous chuckle and her lower lip clipped between her teeth.

She should have figured he wouldn't understand. She definitely hadn't been teased about it before, and that made a small bit of pride well up in her chest at such an indignant comparison. Peek-a-boo! Honestly! Well, he couldn't be blamed. Arching a brow, however, that stubborn little streak of pride in her ability made her gaze shine as she shook her head, "No, I mean disappear. Make him invisible." Frowning, she turned back to the horse with a frustrated bounce of her curls and lifted her hand first for the enlarged nostrils to breathe her scent. Only when she was absolutely sure the animal wouldn't startle did she place her hand gently on his forehead and made him disappear. Looking back at her new acquaintance, she grinned, "See? Dis'pear." She did, however, remove her hand after only a few seconds. That was much more draining then she had expected and she felt a tad light-headed. Still, she'd been using light-bending to clean the cages all day, it would be understandable why she was exhausted now.

___Rasui smiled at her nervous expression. Horses were hardly anything to be frightened of. Naturally curious and quiet, they were fantastic companions whether on a long journey or short trot.
___"He's not going to hurt you ..." The bronze man said quietly, cradling her in his large bicep. "Animals never ever really mean to hurt anyone, it's all just survival." He said wisely. "They need to trust you."

___At her next face he became slightly concerned.
___"I didn't mean to hurt your feelings." Rasui said in an apologetic voice. He was just teasing, if she really could make things disappear, he could buy into that. "Go on ... Show me." He nudged her, but before he could even get the words out the horse vanished and reappeared. "Holy-!" The man whooped, startling the horse for a brief moment before it went back to its relaxed posture. "You really can-"

___He caught her gently, leaning over her as gracefully as he would when dancing with Shen. She looked very tired, and it bothered him. Gently he picked her up in his large arms and held her to his chest.
___"Come on, I know exactly what'll pick your spirits up." He winked at her and motioned at a nearby worker to take the horse in. "Some tea, or coffee, how about some hot cocoa? I've got loads of cocoa." Rasui grinned at her.

She tucked away all these tips for the next time she interacted with one creature or another. Her goal was to make an elephant disappear - long way off, perhaps, but ultimately that was what she aimed for. If she wanted practice, the horse would be the ultimate partner until she could hold out for longer periods. It'd be key, or at least would make things alot easier, if the beast would hold somewhat still for her. She definitely understood why the stallion had lashed out at her, and she had fixed Rasui with an appreciative grin before the fiasco with making the horse disappear.

If she had felt small before, she felt miniscule now. Being drawn up into his chest as if she were naught more than a paper doll was a staggering show of just how large he really was. No wonder the horse had settled beneath his attempts, did it really have a choice? He probably weighed as much as the beast ( give or take a few hundred pounds, but who's counting). Glancing back towards the horse that was being led away, she fought a persistent pout. Tired though she was, she had worked far past this point of exhaustion before and saw no reason to stop now. It seemed, however, that she, too, did not have a choice. Besides, he was speaking to her.

"Hot cocoa?" She had no idea what that could be. Tea and coffee she knew and knew well, but what was this new bit? Was it a drink as well? It had been grouped with the others so perhaps it was. Instead of inquiring further, she insisted, "I promise, I can walk on my own?" She had never been carried before and while she did feel a whole lot better not dragging her sorry carcass around on her own two feet, she felt bad imposing on this stranger.

___Rasui had almost forgotten he was carrying her for a moment, as he took his long strides across the dusty arena. She was very light, and unless her little voice had peeped up at him from the swaddling of brown sinew, he would have completely forgotten about her. Sheepishly he smiled at her and delicately let her down. The sun disappearing on the warped landscape caused a hush and shudder to run through the camp, when it got cold here, it got cold. Very few people could probably stand to be far from the spelled trailers for long, much less survive. Pale people made Rasui shiver sometimes, they always looked like they needed a blanket. Fortunately, Rasui had several.
___"I'm sorry." He apologized with a wide grin, hoping to make up for being so absent-minded. She had probably noticed by his shocked look back down at her that he had completely forgotten her presence, focused intently upon the sweet liquid treat that awaited him inside the trailer. He reached for her again and then pulled back, repeating the gesture a few times as a childlike confusion crossed his face.
___"Ah ..." Should he lead her in? "No, no wait ..." Perhaps she could follow, but his legs were so long he tended to go faster than he meant to. He briefly searched his mind before coming to a conclusion, they would stroll. Rasui held out his arm to her, bend forward at the elbow in a gentlemanly gesture.

Not entirely shocked that he had almost - or even completely - forgot about her in his arms, she smiled and patted his arm when he set her down again. She imagined him carrying her was much like her carrying a piece of hay and he hadn't noticed much at all. Aemilia had no idea how much she actually weighed, but she had a general idea and it seemed a light load for such a broad man. Tugging her fingers through her mass of curls, her eyes dropped from him to look at the setting sun over the horizon before a shiver did run down her spine. It would be a cold night. She'd have to pull out an extra blanket in her own trailer, if for nothing more than to put her mind at ease.

She still didn't know what cocoa was, but that didn't seem to be an issue anymore. His confusion on what to do next along with the cold was altering her decision to request to be put down. He'd been more confident when he could walk without worrying about her keeping up, as she supposed he was thinking now, and she'd been warmer.

When he offered an arm to her, she smiled broadly at a gesture she recognized from cards and watching other people. This made sense. Moving her arm so that her hand rested in the crook of his elbow, she nodded decisively, proud of herself for knowing this one, before she rephrased her question softly, "What is cocoa?"
PostPosted: Wed Oct 15, 2008 10:12 am

___Rasui's eyes glazed over as he mulled over the complete wonderfulness of cocoa. How could he describe it? Within every taste bud was the gentle memory of family and friends, whipped cream and marshmallows. His other hand reached over and gently rested upon hers, squeezing it with fondness upon his large forearm. A slow smile crept upon his lips, as he looked at her and led her forward.
___"Cocoa is a delicious, fantastic, marvelous warm beverage. It's sugary and velvety, with bittersweet undertones. A little frothy, but every gulp makes your heart feel a little stronger."

___As he led her through the busy labyrinth of cages, practice rounds, and tents, his mind began to wander as he rattled off random information about it. "Cocoa is made from the cacao bean, which is indigenous to the Southern Americas. Well, though, now it's being grown everywhere. The ancient peoples who lived there brewed water with it to make a bitter drink, pouring chili powder or whatever else they had into it to give it a rough strong flavour."
___Reaching the door to his shared trailer, he gently opened the door and escorted her inside, motioning to the expansive easy-chair he usually sat in. Everything in the trailer either was riddled with old Broadway posters, playbills, and flowers; but also Rasui's worldly treasures, gathered from every corner of the earth from digs or exotic places. Cultural statuettes and fetishes stood on bookcases filled with musty cloth-covered books with faded lettering. Rasui seated her gently, before reaching to the nearby table for his rounded spectacles.

___"Just a moment." He smiled at her, making his way to the makeshift kitchen and pulling a tin out of a small cupboard. Setting the glasses on the bridge of his nose, he read the back of the metal box to ensure it was the right one before getting a teakettle. He stood in front of the sink, until he turned and opened a small chillbox retrieving a carton of sweet whole milk. Pouring the milk into the kettle and setting it on the tiny stove, he assembled the rest of his precious ingredients with care. He looked over at her, arms akimbo as he tried very hard not to watch the kettle boil.
___"Most everyone's had cocoa before, or at least chocolate." Rasui commented.

Aemilia was, admittedly, a great deal enthralled by Rasui's reaction to her question. He almost seemed as if he were in a trance for a few moments as he searched for the right words to describe the obviously euphoric experience that was 'cocoa'. Her mix-matched eyes brightened with amusement as she waited patiently, returning the gentle squeeze with her own slight fingers of her opposite hand, placing it with it's partner in the crook of his elbow so that it could be warm as well.

She was also endlessly pleased at his answer. Not only had he given her a tactile description so that she could almost imagine what cocoa was like, but had also provided some factual information for her to mull over. South America - she'd seen it on a map, and was glad she had some idea about it. Geography of the old world, the world that wasn't Cirque, wasn't so important anymore so she hadn't exactly been brushing up on it after she had joined the traveling company. His trailer, however, was a veritable treasure chest of interesting things. She was like a child in a museum, eyes widening considerably as she took in the posters and flowers and statuettes and whatever else her gaze happened across. She felt like she'd fallen into a fairy tale - a dragon's cave (which, considering Rasui's massive size, was an interesting idea). Sitting in the large easy-chair, she managed to pull her eyes from her surroundings once he spoke.

It made her lips twitch in a soft, polite smile as she watched him move about the trailer. It seemed as if everything was made in miniature next to his bulk, but he moved with the same amount of grace as if everything were of the proper size. She watched him set about making the cocoa was keen interest, as if she had the intent of possibly making it herself one day - you never knew what you might come across. "It sounds delicious - cocoa," She said it again, as if to be certain she wouldn't forget it, or could still pronounce it correctly in her lilting accent, "But I'm afraid I haven't. Chocolate... either, I don't think." Her gaze returned to the decor, voice dropping, "I haven't had alot of things..."

___Although he had expected it from her response earlier, hearing her say out loud that she'd never had chocolate blew his mind into a million different pieces. He hadn't been as prepared for it as he thought he would be. He looked at the kettle, and then back at her, then to the kettle one last time. It never boils when you watch it, but with all his heart he wanted it to be done now. It excited him, and he hoped she would like it. Deciding it would be better to distract himself with good company, he walked over to her and leaned on the armrest of the chair.
___"We'll have to fix that then." He smiled at her. While he couldn't expose her to everything he was familiar to in his own world, he could most certainly make an attempt to expose her to as many things Cirque made possible! It was an interesting notion, because as traveling various worlds went, it was all going to be mostly brand-new to him as well.

___His glasses glinted in the last shot of sunlight, and realizing how dark it was becoming, he stood and began turning on the various lanterns across the room, casting warm shadows along the silks and carpets. The evening air was heavy with excitement, and little breezes carried upon it whispers from other tents sharing stories of previous lives. As he lit one last candle, he picked up a cushioned stool and placed it near the chair, seating himself upon it with care. After all that, the kettle still hadn't blown, frustrating.
___"Where are you from then, to not have had either, little blushing rose?"

Everyday brought new people into Aemilia's life here at the Cirque, and she was becoming endlessly grateful for all of it. At least it wasn't entirely too out of place for everything to be strange and new to her, considering the traveling nature of the Cirque - between worlds and times where the performers and crewmembers were exposed to things that some of them had never even dreamed of. There were little things that she had missed out on, such as phrases or words or things like chocolate, but people here were patient enough to explain them.

And Rasui's talent with words and explanations, as well as his willingness to 'fix' her little problem of underexposure definitely made her feel light and content.

Watching him turn on the lanterns, she fiddled with the light a bit for a moment behind his back in order to get a clearer look at a poster across the room. When he turned towards her again, the lighting return to normal as she turned her eyes to him as if nothing had happened. Oh, that question: it was always one of the most difficult to answer, again considering the nature of the Cirque. Still, she tried, "London, England. The year 2007, though I've heard that it isn't much like what others are used to." She frowned, then let her lips spread in another patient smile, "And you?"
