About Rain

Generally rain is water falling in drops from vapor condensed in the atmosphere. Typically made up of fresh water, rain falls as precipitation from clouds. The falling drops of water are considered rain if they are larger than 0.02 inches in diameter. In forecasts, rain usually implies that it will fall steadily over a period of time.

This Rain puff was received by Jinxeh on August 27th, 2005.

Care of egg:

Keep it cool and wet as possible until it hatches.
It should hatch in 5-10 days.
Update: Hatched Dec.29th, 2004!

In which Jinxeh discovers a wethkin and loses it down the drain:

Jinxeh was a young woman of determination and some measure of creativity.
She was accomplished in writing and literature, and had gone to university to study medicine. This was in spite of protestations from quarters we will not name. And so Jinxeh studied for three years until she was allowed into the Gaian Hospital to further her learning.
The Gaian Hospital was a teaching hospital, and Jinxeh soon found that she was very busy. There were ward rounds to attend, tutorials, and she rarely had time left for her usual pursuits. Nevertheless, she maintained acquaintances with her friends, and would attend shore parties by the sea surrounding the Isle of Gambino. For the Isle of Gambino was where Jinxeh lived, sharing a neat and quaint grass-hut with her sister, Keilyna.
One Winter morning, as it drizzled and Jinxeh was waiting outside the Gaian Hospital to catch the bus, a drop of water landed in her hair. At least, she thought it a drop of water. It was only later that she discovered that she had a new addition making itself quite comfortable - and making a bird's nest of! - her hair!
What on earth was this creature?
Jinxeh was amazed. She had never seen such a thing, that looked like a drop of water and had antennae and fairy wings. She thought it some kind of parasitic bug at first, like the kind she was well-acquainted with in the pathology pots in the pathology museum. Alarmed, she tried to shake it off, but it clung on tight.
Jinxeh still had the unwanted passenger in her hair when she finally made her way back home. By then she was drenched, and it was not just the rain. Her unwelcome passenger contributed a fair bit to her drowned rat status.
She found Keilyna cooking dinner - chicken and sweet corn soup! - and lucky for her, Keilyna was better acquainted with the flora and fauna of Gaia than her older sister.
"What are you doing with a wethkin in your hair? Where did you find it?" Keilyna asked.
"A wethkin?" Jinxeh looked rather blank at first. Then she recalled that their friend, mooshroom, was in possession of such a creature.
"It doesn't look anything like moo's pet," Jinxeh said dubiously, still trying to dislodge the thing that clung like glue to the strands of her hair.
"Wethkin come in all different types," Keilyna explained. "It has to do with the seasons. This one looks like it's a rain wethkin."
"Why is it clinging to my hair?" Jinxeh complained.
"I don't know - maybe it's lost?"
"Well I'm going to have a shower and see if it will come off!" With that pronouncement, Jinxeh disappeared.
She emerged ten minutes later dressed in much drier clothes, and with a warm blue jacket instead of a white labcoat. "It's gone!" she said in satisfaction. "It got washed down the drain!"
But Keilyna looked completely and utterly aghast. "Gone? Do you have any idea how rare and precious wethkin are?"
Jinxeh blinked. "Ohh…. Oops, I guess."

Meanwhile:
The poor little wethkin so thoroughly dispensed down the drain hovered in the pipes, splashing around in the soap suds. Well, poor wasn't really the best adjective to describe its state at that time because it was having a blast, surrounded as it was by companion soap suds and bubbles!
It splashed around happily, then when it got bored, it flew back up through the drain and into the bathroom. It was quite surprised, for it had not seen too many bathrooms before. It examined the pink-coral tiles, bounced on the fluffy white towels as though they were a trampoline, then settled itself inside the toilet bowl, thinking that a place of so much water would make it a very good home.

In which Keilyna finds something lurking in the toilet:

Inside the shower cubicle, Keilyna was squatting over the drain, trying to work out how to get the Wethkin out. The ends of her flower-patterned blue sarong pooled around her feet on the floor, getting quite soaked since the tiles were still wet from Jinxeh’s shower- Keilyna had rushed in as soon as she had learned of the fate that had befallen the little Wethkin. Her bowl of soup had been left cooling on the table, and if she didn’t get back soon it could soon end up in Jinxeh’s stomach, but there were more important things around than bowls of soup, Keilyna thought.
Poor Wethkin! I should’ve tried to get it out of Jinxeh’s hair before she went into the shower! This is all my fault...She wondered if the Wethkin would be able to latch on to a piece of string if she lowered one through the holes of the drain’s plastic covering, and be pulled back up if it wasn’t too far down. But would it understand what she was trying to do? Keilyna honestly didn’t know. After all, it wasn’t as if any Wethkin had latched on to her hair before, or been thoughtlessly washed down the drain.
A strange sound drifted toward Keilyna’s ears. It was a mixture of chittering, bubbling, babbling and who knew what else- and this unidentifiable, indescribable sound was coming from the toilet! Was this the result of the Wethkin being washed down the drain? Had it blocked the pipes up, or was it going to make the bathroom flood? Alarmed, Keilyna leapt up, slipped on a puddle and promptly landed upon the floor. Muttering to herself, she got up more carefully this time, getting quite wet in the process- and all the while, the toilet continued to emit that strange cacophony of sounds. Ever so cautiously, Keilyna approached the toilet, water dripping off the ends of her bathwater-saturated sarong.
“There’s a bug in the toilet!” she exclaimed, jumping backwards into the towel rack. “Ouch! Ow…” She grabbed onto the offending towel rack for support before her backside had the chance to greet the floor again. That was when Keilyna realised that the bug had not looked like the usual drowned insects that sometimes could be found in such places, and all that had been visible of the creature was wings and antennae. Then it hit her.
“It’s the Wethkin!” she cried, rushing forwards again. Peering over the toilet bowl, her guess was confirmed. Indeed, the creature she had previously mistaken for a bug was the same rain Wethkin that had been perched upon Jinxeh’s head earlier on in the day.
“I’VE FOUND IT!” she yelled happily, making her way out of the bathroom and back to the dining table- dripping a trail of bathwater over the floor as she did so.

Keilyna plonked herself in to her seat and looked at her bowl of chicken and sweet corn soup. It seemed untouched, and it looked as though steam had stopped drifting from it quite a while ago. But it was still food- and good food at that, she thought- so she began to drink it at a leisurely pace as Jinxeh rushed off in the direction of the bathroom. “By the way,” she called after her retreating sister, “the Wethkin’s in the toilet. It’s yours, so you can fish it out.” And with that, she leaned back on her chair, sipped at another spoonful of soup, and waited.

In which Jinxeh discovers a solution:

It''s yours, so you can fish it out....

Yeah right, Jinxeh thought as she pulled her text books out to study. As if she was going to fish some giant head louse out of the toilet! She scattered her books across the kitchen table, as was her habit, and started browsing through Burkitt''s Essential Surgery... complete with all the pretty pictures of surgical cases! She was, after all, doing a surgical rotation at that point in time. And knew of a consultant who had once operated on Gambino himself! Before his madness had set in, of course.

Alas, she could not ignore the wethkin forever. Because, one inevitably would need to use the bathroom, and she found herself faced with the fairy-winged drop splashing happily about in the water.

Jinxeh watched it warily. How could she get it out without getting dirty? It was an impossible task, and yet....

The thought struck her. She would flush it down the toilet! That would get rid of it for once and for all! What did it mattered if the wethkin were rare and precious? It was an overgrown head-louse, and since it liked the sewers so much, it should go there! Jinxeh''s hand reached out decisively, about to hit the button, when....

.... Keilyna burst in!

"Jinxeh, where is my clan sash?" Keilyna had not knocked because Jinxeh had left the door slightly ajar.

Irritated, Jinxeh did not turn around. "I don't know!"

"But you must know, it's not--" Keilyna paused. "What are you doing?"

"Nothing-"

But Keilyna had already peeked over Jinxeh's shoulder and seen the little wethkin swimming in the water. "You can't do that!" she cried, pulling Jinxeh back. "You have to fish it out!"

"But why?"

"Because - Because-"
