My dad bought the house from an old lady who had been living there alone for some time and neglected alot of basic upkeep. The fencing around the yard was prime example. It had fallen over in quite a few places. I eyed the the wooden planks with a wicked intent. Let's just say my dad saw me outside banging away with a hammer and decided to let things be. [:

This is just a simple tripod setup and the closeup shows the better example of the lashing, which is just a simple wrap around with a few clove hitches. I tied the tomato plants to this one.

For the peas I wrapped twine around the posts. Doing a once-around for each post to help keep them secure.
There's nothing really holding them into the dirt, except some minor digging in. This proved a problem for the peas when later in the season we had a wicked storm and the trellises fell over. The soil wasn't a good spot for peas anyway.
For those interested, this is probably the best resource to explain what I did. (I did tripod lashing with racking turns, didn't know it was called that. ;p )It's a downloadable pdf file.
