I think its safe to say that there are more than a few Dungeons and Dragons nerds that surf this forum. A great pioneer died last week. Gary Gygax co-creator of D&D passed away on March 4th from a heart attack. Many of you outside the Table Top RPG crowd may not know who he is, but his influence and genius has helped shape RPGs and gaming in general for over 30 years.
If you ever drank a healing potion in a video game, you have him to thank. If you ever leveled up a character, you have him to thank. If you ever played Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Shadow Run, Balder's Gate, Ultima, Chrono Trigger, Knights of the Old Republic, Legend of Mana, Xenosaga, Fallout, Mass Effect, Grandia..... Hell any game that used Hit Points, Experience Points, Gold, Stat boosting items or characters that are defined by stats, you have him to thank.
This man was to RPG Games like JRR Tolkien and Robert E. Howard were to the Fantasy genre. Like HG Wells and Jules Verne were to Science Fiction. Like Edger Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft were to psychological horror. Like Osamu Tezuka was to anime and manga.
The world lost one of its most creative minds and he will missed. Next time I attack the darkness, it will be in your honor.
*pours Funions and Mountain Dew on the ground*
This is for you, Gary!

Having started RPGs with AD&D 1E when I was a kid, this was rather sad to hear. Apparently he will be getting a dedication in the upcoming 4E PHB. Had he actually lived to play 4E, I suspect he wouldn't have agreed with many of the new changes, given his stated dislike of 3E, but it's a nice gesture nonetheless. Not to make this a downer, here's a bit of comic levity from the Chasers: http://www.chaser.com.au/content/view/3483/72I really should finish reading those Gord the Rogue novels I bought off of eBay a few years back. Farewell, Col_Pladoh. You will be missed.

Yeah, it was a shame to hear about his passing. Still, there have been some rather nice tributes made to him.

Which Outer Plane is for people with the Lawful Awesome alignment?
