Court: Man put abortion pills in lover's yogurt
Swedish woman aborted pregnancy over tainted food fears

updated 6:58 p.m. ET, Tues., Feb. 26, 2008

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A Swedish court of appeal on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old man to 18 months in prison for trying to make his girlfriend miscarry by mixing abortion pills in her food.

The man, who was not named for legal reasons, had his jail term increased from a previous one-year sentence set by a district court in June.

In its ruling, the Court of Appeal for Western Sweden found the man guilty of aggravated assault for attempting to make his girlfriend of eight years miscarry by giving her a yogurt containing three ground-up pills. The sentence also included a more minor count of assault.

The court documents said the woman had decided to have the baby even though he felt he was not ready to be a father. The man ordered some pills on the Internet and fooled his doctor into prescribing others for another condition.

The woman ate the yogurt and suffered severe stomach pains and vaginal bleeding.

When she later realized what she had eaten, she decided to have an abortion, fearing that the fetus had been damaged by the pills.

The defendant's lawyer, Lars Boberg, said his client would most likely appeal the ruling.

It's quite a shame. Pro-life and pro-choice people alike will be appalled, I bet.

Does seem to highlight an inequality though. I mean, women can opt out of motherhood at some point if they feel they're not ready, but men can't really opt out of fatherhood for the same reason. Not that it's excusable, it's just, if women are willing to kill their offspring against the other parent's will in order to avoid parenthood, is it really so surprising that men do the same? It's worse than that though, because he was willing to endanger her as well, which is an added level of disturbing.

That's horrible, she could of died cause of that. I don't get why people do such horrible things because they they don't like or agree about something.

I agree with you, but I'm sure that the pro-choice argument would be that "it's the woman's body."

You're completely right, that would be the argument. But they really can't deny that just as there are women desperate enough to avoid motherhood that they will break the law to kill their children if they need to, there will be men who will go to the same lengths to avoid fatherhood. I wonder if this guy even realized how much danger he was putting her in?

Jesus, I want to know what exactly he used. No one would just hand actual abortion pills to a guy and buying them off the internet is extremely dangerous.

He got them off the internet, apparently. And yeah, it is really dangerous. He could have killed her. I really don't think 18 months is enough time, quite frankly.

Okay this guy should be charged with a few things. The first being Murder in the first Degree. The second being at least reckless endangerment and possibly attempted murder depending on the circumstance. Then he should be charged with what ever the charge is for possessing medication that is illegal. His sentence should be life in prison with no chance of parole.

If she didn't, I say we organize a field trip. I've always wanted to visit Sweden.

That is just wrong. He should have just talked to her instead of sneaking pills into her food. They could've talked it out somehow. She could've gotten hurt in the process. He should've thought about her and the baby. I think that 18 months is way too short for what he did.
