I'm only a high school junior soon to be a senior, but the thoughts of college and etc. have been in my mind for a long time now. The one that's been getting at me the most are sororities and fraternities, and I'd really like to know the answers to some of my questions:

is it really a good idea to join a sorority?
is it worth the money to join a sorority?
will joinging a sorority interfere with my relationship with God and spiritual growth?

I know there are some Christian sororities out there, but the college I plan to attend doesn't have any Christian sororities. It does have Panhellenic and multicultural though.

I joined a musical sorority - we didn't have a house, and never "partied" in the bad sense. We did get together and provided service projects and generally supported each other artistically.

Obviously it would depend on what the sorority is about and what the people in it are like - Use good judgement and you should be fine.

the greek life has it's pros and cons

pros:

they help the community
help make friends
good network for study partners and contacts for future career needs

Cons:
partying (heavily) [not all do this but the majority seem to]
drinking (heavily) [ditto]
if it is a non-Christian group then generally they are pretty immoral about some aspects of life...the sexual side in particular

i went to a public school for 3 years before transfering to a private school and the greek houses there really wern't all that great. although i'll give them credit for being willing to help freshmen adjust to the college life, primarily through rush week (the free food is always nice, even if you don't join). i personally sought out the Christian organization(s) on campus. we had/have a BCM (Baptist collegiate ministries [used to be called BSU]). i found that to be a great place to meet fellow Christians on campus and to find a place to help you grow closer to God while also helping you focus on your studies.

don't get me wrong though....i don't think all greeks are like this, but even so they need believers among them as well....although i'd be careful and make sure your foundation are strong before deciding to join one though b/c you could easily be pulled away from your faith

Phi Beta Kappa is at three of the state universities in North Carolina.
That's about half.
...
so get off your high horse.
I've got friends getting "real" educations at the places that don't have it.

(And before you get all uppity, my university's got it. I've declined to join. Just as well - I'd be in all kinds of emotional weirdness after those shootings.)

*sigh*
You just have to look at what your fraternity/sorority's all about. ΦΒΚ is an honours one. If you're looking for strictly service-oriented ones, they exist, too.

I never said "real education" had to come from 4-year institutions with Phi Beta Kappa chapters now did I

Maybe community college is the place to go...whatever
although in such a case Phi Theta Kappa would be the honors society to join

If an institution doesn't have a chapter start one
don't have that much time on your hands then join whatever honors society your campus has to offer

you seem to be jumping and phantoms of your own creation Gambol my friend. I choose my words carefully so please read and reflect before responding so we can avoid misunderstandings as much as possible.

The two statements are not equivalent

You are the one now claiming education only comes from 4-year institutions

I made no such claim

No, I'm the one saying that education can be received elsewhere...

eh.

Whatever.

Okay now that the argument looks over. LOL

My advice would be to obviously join whatever the Christian club on campus is and then watch some of the friends you'll make and see what frat or sorority they're in. Like for me a lot of my friends are in TKE (Which I'm not sure what it means) and then look into it and see what kind of stuff they do. Of course if they do drink and stuff that doesn't mean you absolutely have to go.

That's my best advice.
