Sounds either like a genuine ghost, or a poltergeist. I thought I made a post in here somewhere about the Appalachian ghost dinner tradition, but I can't find it.
Anyway, here's how it is supposed to work:
The family who currently lives in the home is supposed to orchestrate a dinner that starts at midnight. They dress the "dining room" in all black, from tablecloths, to dishes... everything that they can. You can pick up black paper tablecloths and plastic dishware at a party store. I found some at Wal-Mart.
Candles are also supposed to be present. If you can't find black candles to light the room, white ones will be fine. I'd use tealights, however, for safety. If you can get a hold of some, I highly recommend burning a brazer with
incense charcoal and
Copal resin. Copal is used in Day of the Dead ceremonies, and is sacred to some Central American tribes. Burn it before dinner and leave it alone in the incense brazer. It should burn safely this way. If you do not have an incense brazer, you can burn the incense charcoal and copal resin in a thick glass or ceramic ash tray, but be sure to put the ash tray on an earthenware or heat-resistant plate so that you don't scorch the paper tablecloth or potentially start a fire.
The dinner is supposed to be orchestrated in reverse, and there is absolutely no speaking at any time until the dinner is completely over.
I would plan the actions of the dinner out perfectly on paper before you enter the room. If you need to talk, make notes on paper. A place must be preserved for the entity(ies) in the residence, just as if an extra person were coming to dinner. You leave the food overnight on the table and do not clear that place setting or anything else in the room except for your finished plates. Extinguish all candles before leaving the room.
In the morning, clear the room and smudge it if you can or think it is necessary. The next night, in the same room, ask the spirit aloud and politely if it will leave, that it is unwanted here, but none in the house bear it ill will or malice. Then, open the front door or a window if possible and smudge or sweep/clean the entire house from back to front, top to bottom, and sweep all of the dust and whatnot outside or smudge until you are outside.
If this doesn't work, let me know. I can give you some advice for preparation and practice of creating an astral ward to make the house a safe zone.
