hmmm when games were first invented, I don't thik they wanted it to be just for boys
hee hee you would think that games would be just for girls cause instead of using real violence, you use video game violence 3nodding aren't boys supposed to use real violence....they are BOYS after all and that IS the steriotype

*laughs* Touche.

It never really crossed my mind that games should only be for boys. I mean when I first started playing games. . . man, I must've been like 5 or something. . . so gender discrimination was the furthest thing from my mind. All I wanted to do was shoot those stupid ducks (and the dog occasionally). ^.^

Now? I'm still of the same mind. Girls, guys it doesn't matter. Games are games. All that matters is whether or not the person enjoys them. 3nodding

Well, it's no big surprise that most games are marketed towards men and boys because they already make up the primary market. You won't see many (if any) game advertisements in Cosmo, but you'll find them all over Playboy and Maxim, no doubt. With the emphasis on sports and violence in mainstream video games (GTA, Madden, Halo) it's no wonder that the mass population of girls feel alienated.

Game companies are still companies first looking to make a profit. Marketing a game for a population that doesn't play games is financial suicide. So yes, generally games are targeted to men and boys, with a few brave companies marketing games that are more gender neutral to hopefully catch a new market...hopefully making something like the Sims corner a new market. A game for those who don't play games. I hear the DS is bringing in the G & G (Girlfriends and Grandparents) into the game market. Short lived? Mayhaps...but might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Video games aren't geared towards guys as much as the gaming magazines are. There's the execeptions of The Guy Game etc..

It's the gaming magazines that make it more and more male-oriented. The female gamer population is larger than you think. We're generally pretending to be men on multiplayer games, because you don't want to see "A/S/L??" flying across the screen when you're trying to knife some newb on Dust.

Xbox live also presents problems, when girls play. Whenever I throughly kick a guy's a** it's:
"Oh, well I was going easy on you 'cause you're a girl"
"Haha, you got your a** kicked by a girl, you suck."
"Girls suck at games. You just got lucky."
"You're not really a girl."

Why is this? Girl gamers aren't rare. Girls are as good at games as guys. But because of the immaturity of guys, we sort of don't make our presence known - and if we don't, then the gaming industry will never know we're out there, and never cater to us.

Cosmo doesn't feature stories about videogames, because Cosmo is all about the following things:
How to please a guy in bed
How to look hot
Your horoscope about how you look hot while pleasing a guy in bed

Gaming magazines don't feature stories about gamer girls, because the magazine is about the following things:
Pixellated hot mostly naked girls
How you're a loser because you play games and can't date
You can't date because of featured pixellated girls

It's stereotypes setting the genders up for disaster - and it's annoying.

sweatdrop That is such a lie. Sure, some girls might not like video games, but I know I'm not the only girl who enjoys video games. (Well...obviously. There's a guild for it).

Really, when I was younger I think I was aware of the 'only guys play video games' sterotype, but I just didn't care. My parents didn't have a problem with it, and I wasn't really THAT girly, anyway. Sure, I liked Beauty and the Beast and tea parties, but I also liked spies and Power Rangers. Why couldn't I play video games?

Girl gamers aren't rare? If that's true, then I must be looking in the wrong place. I never bought an Xbox because I'm mainly from the PC gamer realm, so none of the multiplayer games on Xbox appealed to me. Are they on Xbox Live? It could also be this generation of girls who are more open to game playing than it was in past generations (i.e. my generation).

I agree that girls can be just as good as games as guys. Heck, any single human can be just as good as any other human at any given activity. But unless we're cutting a very specific population (The gaming population from the main population, and then the girl population within the gaming population), girl gamers are fairly rare.

The instance where girl gamers won't let their prescence be known online because of the crowd of immature guys kind of shows that you are indeed the minority, and if you were playing with a bunch of girls, such comments either wouldn't happen, or would die down quietly.

However, as society is placed, gaming is shown to be a more guy oriented pastime, and thus games shall be made to follow this market. However, I think game companies are finding out that the current gaming market is tapping dry, and will start opening up more to the female aspect in order to garner more customers. I mean, in Hollywood, summer action blockbusters can't carry all the money. Millions of dollars to the company who makes the gaming equivalent to a "Chick Flick."
