My best friend and I were having this talk about Lolita clothing. He says he has a hard time finding it attractive on average girls because of all the pictures of J-Pop models and anime characters wearing the clothes, and that it just doesn't live up to the expectations created by these images. Personally, I think he's being rather silly, but there is some truth to what he's saying. What do you think? Do you think Japanese media is creating an unrealistic Lolita ideal, much like the American media does for the typical American teen female?

I think so, but I think I'm thinking in a different way than you.

I think american's look at magazines like the loli bible and think that to be lolita you HAVE to fit into these exact molds when really, what harajuku and all these styles are about is dressing the way you like and expressing yourself, not going and fitting into a mold of "lolita" or whatever fashion. I dress in many styles, decora, Visual kei and all types of lolita, but I always make it my own style by wearing what I want, and adding what I want to the outfit, not what some magazine says I should add.

This is how many new trends start, esspecialy here in Japan. One person really likes accessories and one day, she goes to harajuku wearing everysingle one she owns, someone else sees her and thinks "Oh wow I really like that" anf they go home, with that inspatraion and make there own style of it. Eventualy the "insparation" catches on, and a bunch of people are now doing it, but still making it there own style.

They way my country is, teens and young people have very few ways to express individuality. Fashion and music being some of the only ways. So thats what we do, we takes risks and dress however the hell we want.

I look at loli bible and other magazines and insparation to my own ideas, and that what I think it should be. I don't expect every lolita to look like the ones in the magazines, that would just be rediculous.

But yea, i really think that media gives a really unrealistic view of lolita, but mostly to people outside japan I think. I went off topic a little, sorry! sweatdrop

-C'est la lune qui conduit la danse...-

The media always give an unrealistic view of things, sadly. :c

EDIT: But like, I don't think it's such a serious expectation, since only in a small section of Japan is it really known. If you spread out farther into different areas there are less and less people who know about Lolita, just like in the Western culture.

In the G&L Bible, yeah, there's the models that would "best represent" what a Lolita should look like, but it's only something to look up to for inspiration, really. No girl should have to be pressured into losing/gaining weight, having her hair a certain length and texture and color, and just have an overall attitude to match the fashion style. Lolitas aren't different from the rest of the people in the world, the only thing that makes them look different is the clothes.

Does your friend even see that many lolita (doing it RIGHT) aside from J-Pop models and *ew* anime characters?
Then again, I'm not really inspired by them - the pictures that make me want to try out new styles are almost always pictures on daily_lolita.
I just see the media portrayal as a bunch of ads for brand. It isn't telling me I should look a certain way - it just says BUY ME.

I don't know how "unrealistic" you can say the representation is when it's firstly targeted at tiny Asian girls and modeled by tiny Asian girls.

Well, yeah...lolita clothings do look a lot better on models than average people, that goes for Japan as well, not every Japanese girls look nice in lolita dresses. You just need to find what suits you really, if you look older than your age (like me xD) you can conside dressing up a bit more mature. Even models needs to find what they are suited for, really, not all the models and model every style in the world.

Lolita fashion is just a hobbie, if you like what you are wearing, then wear it, you'll gonna get stared at no matter what anyways. xD I mean, if you truly like something, you wouldn't need to let other people to judge it for you. 3nodding

By your example, I shouldn't wear my swimsuit, because I'm not as busty as the blonde they have squeezed into it on the picture.

All media creates unrealistic ideals, its their job to promote the most beautiful image they can find in this setting to sell the product, to make people want, what they don't have.

He sees it on me and my friends a lot, and he's seen tons of cosplay Lolita (*shudders* never liked that style). He says it looks "cute enough" but still falls short of his expectations.

Like I said, I think he's just being silly. Lolita, to me, isn't so much about looking pretty as it is expressing your own unique personality through clothes that bring out an inner you. 3nodding

*hugs* not many people seem to think that in america... I have noticed anyway. They see a style and just try to copy it instead of making it there own....

As others have said, it isn't just Japanese media. Heck, look at Victoria's Secret. Just because you put on an $80 swim suit, doesn't mean you'll look like you hit the gym at least 5 times a week. The media intentionally hires attractive, fit models to sell their cloths (probably because they have a larger array of cloths they look good in, and don't have to limit themselves to certain things to hide flaws). I thought most people knew by now that not everyone in every-day life is as attractive as people in magazines, and on tv.. hm..
