This Friday, I will likely bring great shame to my school at a Japanese speech and skit competition. I await with dread my inevitable failure. I have horrible visions of stumbling over words or forgetting lines entirely, and for the past week these mental glimpses of terror have reigned over my life. After this is all over, I may have to hire a therapist. That's how it goes.

And you?

What about you? Have you too suffered, or are about to suffer, the horrors of a speech, skit, or essay competition? Has the shadow of crippling doubt pursued you doggedly for longer a time than is tolerable?

If so...

Let's chat about it. 8D

My freshman year skits were a large part of our final grade for beginning japanese 1 and 2. Despite the fact that I hate getting up in front of audiences and I hate acting, the foreign language element somehow made these 'doable.' They were actually somewhat fun once they were all over.

As for speeches in Japanese, unlike English where I can make an outline and just talk, I really felt the need to memorize alll of my speech, even when it had to be 5 minutes long :/ But along the way if I forgot a line I just kind of improvised...I think total memorization is a necessary over preparation because when you drop a line you kinda 'know' where you are in the speech, then just say something similar and go on.

So, yesterday I gave my speech at the contest.

I didn't win, but I had a lot of fun even though I was really nervous. To tell the truth, and not to be super arrogant or anything, but I don't know why I didn't place. xD;; Most of the other speeches were not very correct grammar-wise and their content was sort of like "my family blah blah blah." That's not to say they weren't good - they were! - but I do feel a little cheated, having worked so hard to do a good job. I guess that's how it is with competitions though, isn't it?

I'll just have to do better next year! <33

Does anybody want to see my speech or give critiques on it, grammar-wise, content wise, etc? 8D I'd appreciate it a lot if got some feedback.

Aw, I'm sure everyone worked hard, even if some people are at a lower level of knowledge than you. But you weren't too disappointed in your own thing, so that's good in my opinion ^^

If you want to post some of your speech, I'd gladly look it over, but my knowledge is far too low level to really critique it.

Oh, totally! I'm sure everyone worked as hard as I did, and I'm glad that they won for their efforts. I can't help being a little selfish, though. xDD Human nature, I guess. Still, I'm happy that someone got noticed.

Anyway, here's my speech. I think it's terrible, but I tried. I haven't been taking Japanese for a very long time, so it's kind of yucky.

=D Yay! I was able to read some of that without looking up the kanji! ...Some.
How long have you been studying?

I'm really very bad at thinking of things to say about things I've read and such, so I'm pretty much going to leave it at good job. Hopefully you can get some better opinions on this, and thanks for sharing. ^^

Wow, I actually thought that was really good whee Mostly because of the story; plus I really admire the "友好は木" and "新しい世界の扉" parts. If I had been writing it, I'd be too busy struggling with how to say things literally, let alone put in pretty imagery like that ^^;

Aaaand ... I kind of feel like a hypocrite nitpicking at something I couldn't write myself, but ...

友好の花が咲きました -> "咲き初めました" would be a bit better, I think?

... haha, that's the only thing xD I was going to say something else, but I realized that I was wrong, so, yeah.

@Stellar Green: Congrats on your kanji-reading. As for me, I've been studying about...a year and a half now? Almost two. What about you?

@black.x.white: That does sound better. Haha, why couldn't I think of that? xD Thanks so much for the nitpick (loved it) and the compliments.
