He would have still been upset at his brother for snapping had they still been younger. Had Cornelius no respect for superiors? Sure, Cidney may have looked younger, but she was still older than them. And what was this about bringing up a story? Drake hadn't told one of his epic tales in awhile... Instead of bristling with fury, Drake kept his nerves, even grinning a bit* I'm terribly sorry Miss Cidney, you'll have to excuse my brother. There was the sound of a tongue clicking against the back of sharp teeth.
Pearl sat on top of a rock, shaking her head, and the trio's father walked around said rock. It had been the quick female that had tsked her younger brother and she slid gracefully from her perch and walked up to the gathered otters beside Hector.
"Having troubles, my dear?" Hector asked, walking to Elizabeth and nuzzling her gently. Pearl stopped and sat down beside her mother, smiling prettily and tilting her head a bit so that her hair covered a little bit of one eye.

Elizabeth silently frowned at her oldest son and then sighed, shaking her head, having nothing to say to him at the moment. She looked to her daughter and mate when they came to her and she nuzzled him back, looking back over the still water, "No trouble just....Cornelius....I had hoped his anger wouldn't fester but it has..." she said softly.

At this, Hector sat and one paw rose to rub his chin in thought. Perhaps the boy needed a talking to.
"I'll go talk to him," Hector replied and shed hat, coat, and boots before diving smoothly into the water in search of his youngest.
"Mother, why is Cornelius angered?" Pearl asked softly after her father had left, looking from her mother, to craning around her to look at the water and then back to looking at Elizabeth.

Drake's ears pircked up as his sister and father approached. His dipped his head curtly to them both, pushing up his hat when it fell over his eyes. He straightened his jacket before adressing them. "'Allo Pearl. Lovely attire you 'ave. Makes you look very elegant, might I say." He grinned and turned towards Hector. "Ah, 'allo father. S'been some time, 'asn't it?" He cast a questioning glance towards his mother. "What set 'Nelius off?" He bit his tounge, silently wondering whether the answer to that involved him somehow.

Elizabeth nodded her head to Hector and watched him as he took of his coat, boots and hat and then slipped into the water. She wasn't sure how Cornelius would react to his father trying to pry something out of him, she just hoped he wouldn't fuss and get angry. She looked to her other two children and smiled gently, glad they didn't need her as much as Cornelius seemed to while he was still a pup, "He is angry because of how he was born..." she said softly.
Cornelius waited in the shadows of some roots in the water, his glowing eyes watching a small school of fish. He could just wait till the right moment, he would nab the biggest one to bring back to his mother.

Drake blinked in confusion. "He's angry 'cause... he's a demon?" What could be so bad about being a demon? Besides having horns, a pronged tail, and looking a bit more fierce, they looked like any other otter.

Pearl blinked in confusion and looked to Drake when he questioned their mother.
"But... that doesn't make since. He's stronger and bigger than both Drake and I," she offered her two pence, a rare thing for the more reserved female. Even among family did she rarely speak, and almost never over a soft spoken tone.
Meanwhile Hector slowly made his way through the water in search of his son, finally spotting the sharp tail spines near some roots. Apparently Cornelius was hunting, by the look of the situation with his son hiding in the shadow of some roots and the nearby school of fish. Hector moved slowly into hiding himself, to watch his son.

Elizabeth sighs sadly and shakes her head as she lays down, eyes still on the water, "When he was born...we both almost died...because I hesistated in putting him in shell because I feared it wouldn't keep him safe." she said softly, closing her eyes. "That is why he is so angry with everything."
Seeing his chance, he darts out from the roots like a shot and before the fish could scatter, he snatched the largest one and quickly killed it under the water. Smiling around the scales and meat in his mouth, he swam towards the surface to get some air.

Pearl frowned and studied her mother.
"But how would he know this, unless you told him?" she asked and thought for a minute. By the look in her eyes, her clever brain was quickly processing the information.
"Mother... did you feel the same for Drake and I?"
Hector watched proudly as Cornelius attacked the largest fish and killed it, taking it to the surface. He followed and broke near his son.
"That was a good catch, son," he complemented, nodding to the dead fish in Cornelius' jaws.

Elizabeth looks to Pearl, smiling at her daughter gently, "No, I had you two before I had Cornelius, so you were both safe in your clams. But...Cornelius was the most difficult...and so he is angry at himself and that makes him angry at everything else." she explained.
Cornelius was a bit surprised to see his father pop up beside him and nodded his approval. He then narrowed his eyes and grunted, swimming away to shore to check over his catch.

Drake remained quiet after learning this information from his mother. They could have died...? His concentration was disturbed as Cornelius and his father's heads broke through the surface of the water. He grinned at Pearl's statement. Her mind was quick and cunning. He looked at his mother expectantly as she explained the predicament and nodded slightly. As his brother swam to shore, he waved his tail. "Good hunt?" he called.

Pearl felt that the answer she received wasn't sufficient, but she wasn't about to press her mother, not when the brother in question had just resurfaced. She gave him a small nod and grinned a little sneakily, for no reason other than that she could.
Hector followed his son to shore and climbed up, shaking a bit of the water from his fur and clothes.
"Cornelius, when you are done with that, I would like you and I to take a walk together," he stated. Some might have considered the statement more of a command, but Hector's children knew that unless they were in trouble, their father would never demand something like a walk.

Cornelius just grunted at his brother in acknowledgement to his kill and he swam to shore with his prize still clutched in his maw. He slipped onto the bank and set the fish down, shaking his fur dry and getting ready to take the fish to his mother when his father addressed him. Hector frowned at his son before following. When they were a ways away from the rest of the family, he told his youngest to stop.
When Cornelius stopped, Hector deftly spun around and the flat of his tail made a loud thwack against the back of his son's head. Not hard enough to really damage him, but enough to hurt.
"That, is for talking back to me. What is wrong, Cornelius? I would have thought Elizabeth and I raised you to have more respect than that towards us," he sighed and sat down, his whiskers turned down in a frown.
Pearl copied her brother's shrug and added a small shake of her head. Cornelius was more angry than usual, Father seemed angry, Mother was upset, Drake was confused, and she... Well, she was wondering if she was too clever for her own good.

Drake watched as 'Nelius stalked away from their father. He decided not to go over, thinking he'd probably get in the way. He yawned and stretched and looked over to his mother, hoping to relieve some stress. Aoi's ears fell back as he watched the world move around him, it never seemed to stop even when you wished it would. He felt weak and foolish, as if his life was not worth it. He was an adult yet he had not learned to fly or to fish, yet a young kit just born could do better then he could. He felt angry and bitter but it was at no one but himself, for that’s all he had to blame. His outside might have been clean but his inside was turning black with hate and grief. He was pitiful, drowning in his self pity like a spoiled kit, but he was anything but. Growling lowly he stood up and walked away from the others, his tail swishing behind him as he remained still deep in thoughts. He didn't have a family like those kits, but it didn't mean he had to fall apart. Walking a bit away he came to a medium sized rock that jutted out from the ground casting a shadow across half of him making his fur turn gray.
It was odd what he thought of but right now his mind was on one thing, 'learn to fly.' He walked to the rock before climb up on top of it and looking down knowing it was higher then he had thought. Here was a way he could learn; it was sink or swim, well fall or fly but near enough the same. The height wasn't enough to kill him if he fell, but enough to hurt him for failing. Taking a breath he closed his eyes and jumped, but try as he might he just couldn't get his wings to move and he fell to the ground with a thud. Picking himself up him went back to the rock and tried again. Over and over he did this, and all he got was he was able to soften his landing a bit, but stubborn he didn't do it. He failed over and over but he kept getting up back onto the rock before jumping again. The thought crossed him that maybe he just couldn't fly and his wings were broken, but he knew it wasn't true so he kept going. Each fall made him hurt more and more but just as he wanted to give up his wings opened and he flew not quiet a lot but more then he had ever done.
His landing was not good and he might as well have fallen again but this time he lay panting, his fur again dirty with the dusty ground he lay on, but his eyes were bright and happy as he felt he could do it, this next time he would do it. Grunting he got up and climbed the rock before he could think twice he jumped, but this time he did it and held himself off the ground but with each wing beat he grew tired so when he felt his wings burn like fire he slowly brought himself to the ground and finding his legs wouldn't hold him he just lay there panting happily as he flapped his wings before folding them against his back. He could do it, and he did it on his own, now he had to learn to fish as his stomach growled with hunger and if he was going to practice flying he would need food. He was lighter then his normal weight so he had to gain it back slowly and his wings would adapt and get stronger as the rest of him would. Smiling he let his eyes close and he rested in the shade the rock cast. Maybe he could do it after all, he would prove it to himself he could pick himself back up and nurse his wounds and keep going. It might be a long road ahead and not a very good one to do alone, but he would.

Elizabeth pulled the fish over to her so she could start taking off the fins and stripping it so she could give some to her other two children. She looked up at Drake and then sighed as she looked back down at the fish, "You had your father Drake....I'm sorry..." she said softly.
Cornelius stood a bit away from his father, but he didn't expect to get hit on the head. If it was anyone else, he would have hissed and probably attacked, but he only growled deeply and backed away from Hector, eyes narrowing further, "What do you mean you and Mama raised me?! It was only mother!! You have your two perfectly dressed children to coddle and teach to be pirates! But I was the demon son, the one who wasn't normal! So don't lecture me when you didn't want anything to do with the demon!" he spat back at him, his body shaking with pent up fury.

Aoi was walking back when he heard the sound of yelling, his head hurt from when he hit it a few times but curiosity got the better of him and he slowly walked toward the otter that had been yelling. He had batched in the river before coming back, once more he was clean and the bruises he got safely hidden under his fur. He walked until about a foot away, far enough not to get a hit on the head like he saw the black otter get. He had heard a bit of what was said, something about not being wanted or at least along those lines. “Come now, what’s with all the yelling today?” His voice was kind and soft, much better then it had been before but a little roughness was still around the edges. He didn’t dare get closer unless he risk the others getting mad at him and attacking him for getting his intentions wrong. He felt better then had in a long while, but the wound on his back was not healing leaving him feeling a bit sick, still it was his inside that felt better, brighter sort of.

Drake eyed the fish curiously, but knew that he'd let the mistresses have their share first. He looked to his mother. "Ah, no. I didn't see father much either. You must be mistakin' me for Pearl." He tone began to drip with humor as he entered an exagerated skit. He would try to liven mother up... hopefully. "I was left in the wilderness with a little otter pie, tryin' to survive from packs of savage wolves and killer bobcats with nothing but me will and the clothes on meh back. 'Twas a strenuous struggle, but in the end, I think I came out pretteh 'lright, if I say so myself. Pearl shook her head at both her mother's and Drake's comments.
"I like to learn on my own. Papa learned that quickly an' le' me be. Said I got i' from 'im," she explained, a string of words surprising in length for the normally quiet female. She looked to Drake with a "Give me a break" look and shook her head.
"Two crayfish says you've ne'er even seen a bob in your life," she bet against her brother's story, giving him a small grin.
Hector sat back and let his son yell at him, ears set back slightly. So much anger... At this point Hector stopped caring whether Cornelius yelled at him or not.
"It wasn't like I had much of a choice. Elizabeth wouldn't let you out of her sight for two minutes. An' I had nothin' to do with Drake nor Pearl's raisin', either. Drake was always off adventurin' an' Pearl... Well, she takes after me in that she doesn't like to be taught by anyone but herself. So when you think about it, you were the only one actually raised by either of us, so stop your complainin'," the older otter replied civilly. He turned to the angelic boy that had spoke and frowned just a bit.
"Aoi, I think we should let them be. Father-son time," a mellowed voice said from above and Abel floated down from a nearby tree. He landed and motioned for Aoi to follow him before walking off away from both areas occupied by the pirate family.
Once the angelics were gone, Hector turned back to Cornelius and shook his head.
"I can't believe you would think that I care less for you because you're a demon, but I guess we've never gotten a chance to talk. I expect so much more from you then your brother and sister. I've seen you in the water. You're fast and strong. I can't tell you how proud I am of your abilities," he added and shook his head again. He'd guessed he just wasn't cut out to be a father long ago, and this just strengthened that belief. Pirates just didn't make good parents, considering most never knew theirs.

Cornelius glared at his father, not wanting to believe him. He growled over at the angelic that spoke and it took alot for him not to snap at him to mind his own business and go away. There was only one Angelic he liked and respected. Well two, but he would never admit that to Abel. He had stepped back into his shoes before walking off to talk with his son, so all he was missing was hat and coat, which he would retrieve soon. He turned and took a few steps back towards the others, but paused and looked a bit over his shoulder at Cornelius.
"If Elizabeth blamed herself and thought there was somethin' wrong with her that caused you to be the way you are, she never told me," was all he could manage to say. Pirates didn't make good parents, the short string of words repeated in his head. A rift had grown between him and Elizabeth of late. The pups were grown, of a sort, and it was clear that none of them really needed him, so he decided the best course of action was to just return to his old hunting grounds. Go back to the old times, just him and... Well, Mar would probably want to stick around Smee and the cozy den; she hadn't been used to having a den and took to the one off the China Sea very well.
It looked like he was back to being on his own again.
'Nothing wrong with that,' he thought. But if that was true, why did he not enjoy thinking about it?

Elizabeth laid close by the water, watching her son and daughter with amusement on her face and eyes. But she still felt...hollow, inside, like something was missing. Maybe it was all her fault, this anger that Cornelius felt, the silent rift that was between her and Hector. What would she do now? Go off alone and leave the den cold and empty now?
Cornelius glared over his shoulder, "She never told you cause you probably wouldn't have tried to listen anyway. So why don't you just do what you have been doing since I came out of the clam and just be scarce." he growled, stalking toward the water and slipping, disappearing into the dark depths as he dived down.

Drake's whiskers twitched. "Yeah, seems we've reach'd an 'mpass, love," He was glad he wouldn't have to retrieve a catfish after sorely losing the bet; but Pearl had no proof that he didn't encounter the predators, and that was the end of that. He flicked at the royal blue sash around his waist, pondering the arrangment of a fleet. "What's the ol' man been up to?" he inquired Pearl about their father curiously. He wasn't accusing Hector of being old, but used the term anyway, knowing he could get way with it without receiving a smack to the head when their father wasn't around at the moment.

Before Cornelius left, Hector nodded his head and mutter a quiet, "Will do, son."
Oh, he would have listened. He never ignored Elizabeth when it was important. True, he didn't know how to handle a lot of things when it came to feelings and the like, but the least he could do was listen. He took a slow breath as Cornelius fled into the water, straightened his shoulders and walked back to where he left his belongings, looking to the world like the same slightly arrogant, high-mannered, fashion-sensible otter that he always was. But inside he just felt old.
He nodded to son and daughter as he passed them, walked to Elizabeth and flipped his hat onto his head. He then took his jacket into his teeth and flung it around his shoulders, not bothering to slide his paws into the sleeves.
"When you get a chance, tell your son there's nothin' wrong with 'im. And stop worryin' so much," he softly told Elizabeth, touched his nose to her cheek, and walked away before she could say anything back.
Pearl merely shrugged at her brother's inquiry.
"Bein' an otter, like you an' me, I would 'ssume. 'e dozes a lot," she replied. Speak of the devil, their father walked back through their little area and briefly spoke to Mother before walking off. The smallest of the trio had a sinking suspicion that this would be the last time she would see her father for a while and fought down the urge to run to him. She knew as well as any that if you went somewhere on your own, more often than not you had a reason to. And she wasn't about to bother her beloved papa.

Elizabeth sat up when she heard someone approach and she felt...happy inside when she saw Hector approaching and was going to nuzzle him back, but she felt herself freeze when he basically told her goodbye and was padding off. She watched him silently and something inside of her snapped, tired of the men in her life just walking away from her.
Growling deeply and baring her teeth, she tore off after him, letting out something like a war cry as she leaped up and pounced on him, tackling him down and taking his hat and shaking it around in her teeth, still keeping him pinned down.

"Mmhm..." Drake watched as Hector collected his attire and speaking to mother before padding off. He had a sinking feeling his father would be gone for awhile. Glancing over at Pearl, it seemed she realized this predicament too. Was it something that Cornelius said to Hector? He frowned, and followed after his father. He wasn't going to loose his chance of talking to his father before the last time seeing him for awhile. When he was just a meter behind, he spoke up. "Oi, not everyone want's you to go..."
Drake watched in shock as mother ran after Hector furiously and pinned him down. His hat was being thrashed around in her jaws viciously. "M-mother!"

Pearl's eyes widened to the size of saucers when their mother literally tackled their father, grabbed his hat, and shook it fiercely. She turned her wide-eyed gaze on Drake for a brief moment before dashing off, away from their mother and father, partially hoping that Drake would have the sense enough to follow her lead. All-in-all, she just didn't want to know.
Now, a part of Hector had considered the possibility of Elizabeth tearing after him, but never would he have come up with her actual reaction. His face connected hard with the ground and he lay limp beneath her for a moment as he attempted to get his scattered wits back into one piece. Finding the task too difficult to complete with her standing on him and whipping his hat back and forth, he growled a bit and tried to shake her off.
"What the devil are you doing?! What's come over you this time?!"

Elizabeth shoved one of her paws on top of his head when he spoke and tried to shake her off and she refused to be moved, growling still and shaking his hat, looking incredibly angry at that moment. She didn't care if she might be hurting him, she was just so angry that he was trying to leave and she wasn't going to let him, not this time!! She was trying to pin him down, keep him there, trying to be domineering.

Drake bit his lip, unsure what to do. He watched as Pearl sprinted away and wondered whether to follow or not. It seemed he'd be in more trouble if he'd interfere with mother and father. He felt like he was setting a bad example as the eldest of the three by running away, but Pearl did have the most sense and wit out of all of them. Turning, he dashed off after his sister, hoping she wouldn't run off too far before stopping. "Pearl!" he called ahead.

With his face shoved into the dirt once again, Hector realized his best course of action was to just fall limp, something he was loathe to do, but did so anyways.
'Ball's in your court now, Lizzy,' he thought to himself as he lay very still, waiting for her next move.
Pearl heard her brother call out behind her and slowed to a stop near the riverbank.
"You're slow, Drake. Ev'n little Corny's faster than on lan' you are," Pearl taunted her older brother with a cheeky grin. She didn't mind so much talking to her brothers, especially when she was teasing them for one thing or another.

Drake huffed, obviously not appreciating being called slow. "You're talking to an otter who out-ran an eagle flyin' 70 miles an 'our, love. Besides, I don't know how ye run so fast 'n tha' gown of yers. Proba'ly makes ye more aero-dynamic or whatever." he grinned and cuffed her over the ear lightly. His expression straightened as he tilted his head in the direction from which they came. "Wha' was 'll that back ther with mum an' dad?"

Elizabeth breathed heavily as she stood over him, hat still in her mouth and still standing on top of Hector, paws keeping him pinned down. She felt him go limp, as if submitting and she was glad for it because she didn't really want to fight him to get him sit still. She slowly backed off him, calming her breathing down as she set the hat down to her side, keeping it with her in case he tried to take it and leave.
"I won't let you.....I won't let you leave...." she whispered, still looking at him with narrowed eyes and body incredibly tense, as if ready to spring into action at any second.

Aoi ear's went back at he was tolled to leave it be, but doing as asked he said nothing simply walked away ignoring everything and everyone. He wondered how someone could ignore there child, or the child hate there parents, but then he never had any. Of course he now pitied himself again and quickly gave himself a shake to snap out of the depressing thoughts. He really had no idea how a fight between family members could happen, he tried to think about it but drew up blanks every time. Oh he was sure there were other otters like him but he had yet to meet any, or at least anyone willing to say it. Still, things could be worse; he could still be with those crazed ones. Looking at the pond his stomach growled angrily but he ignored it, instead he walked once more away from the others to give them peace and let them finish what ever it was they were doing. He walked till once more he reached his rock where he lay down in its shade planning on getting some sleep.

Pearl smirked at her older brother and tossed her hair back over her shoulder.
"I'm jus' good that way," she replied and dipped her tail into the water. With a skillful flick, the fin on her tail splashed water at Drake.
"Ha! Out-ran an eagle my paw. If you ev'r ev'n seen an eagle, I bet you hi' in a bush," she retorted, sticking her tongue out at him.
Hector sat up and shook himself as she huffed and spoke. He shook his head and held out a paw.
"Mind's made up, Elizabeth. Your son made it perfectly clear how much I'm wanted in this family. Face it. You picked the wrong otter to start a family with. My kind doesn't know how to be a part of a family. All we know how to do is ruin them," he retorted, eyes narrowed slightly.
"There's always been tension in that family, from day one," Abel said as he walked with Aoi. He sat when Aoi laid down on the rock and slowly shook his head.
"I've tried to help, but it just seems to get worse, especially with their youngest. And it has nothing to do with what he is, only that he is different and that his mother drilled that into his head, though most likely on accident," the priest continued, tapping his tail thoughtfully on the ground. After a moment, he looked up and tilted his head to one side.
"Aoi, how come I've never seen you fly?"

(( Hope you feel better Roxy >< ))
Drake's whiskers twitched as he scrunched up his nose for a second. "Jus' good tha' way, eh?" With a webbed paw, he reached into the water and splashed some back at his younger sister. He still wanted to find out why mother and father had been fighting, but the thought was temporarily wiped from his mind as he heard what he thought was a dare coming from Pearl's mouth. His infamous grin drew across his face at the sound of a challange. "How much are you willin' to place on tha' bet?" He could pull it off. He knew it. The hard part would be findin' an eagle though...

Elizabeth narrowed her eyes, trying not to lose her temper and bite him or something just as painful, "And you think I am so saint, that I am the perfect mother?! It's MY fault Cornelius is the way he is because I tried so hard to protect him but all I did was end up making things worse! Nothing is perfect Hector, especially when we are pirates, but all we can do is try our best, even when we mess up." she said, first in an angry tone and then slowly drifting down to a somewhat defeated whisper.
She then padded her way closer to him, leaving his hat where she left it, a defiant look now on her otter face, "But I refuse for you to leave me!! I....I wouldn't feel....complete...if you left me behind..." she said softly, sitting down, but still looking at him.
