wrestlingicon go for the one with more people, bigger chance of mistakes being missed. No, go for the one that's less common, probably tuba. Scholarships for the win. On an uncommon instrument, you have a better chance of getting recognized. Less competition.

The question is, what intrigues you about the tuba? If you like the low notes, try playing Bass Trombone. A good player can go just as low, and you still will be able to keep the higher range, too. It can easily replace the tuba in a quintet setting as well as other ensemble, plus it will be less of a dramatic change than switching to tuba, you'll learn easier. That plus there's the problems to learning new fingering and notes on the staff, learning to play with a new embouchure and all the fun that goes with that...
Oh, and as for going for less common instruments for the scholarships, there's still going to be hundreds of people competing for the money, and there's tons of people on each instrument. the question is, how good are you on the trombone? it's the hard work and the talent they are looking for, and if you want to play professional, you need to be flat out awesome. What will really get you an edge is to be able to play more than one instrument well. Now, tenor and bass trombone are similar, but if you put tuba and trombone on your application? That's dynamite! to do that, you need to play both. Play both if I were you...
