I'll start off my reviews by going down the list of games that you need to play before you die. Though it isn't topping the list, i'll start with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.
Gameplay: Metal Gear Solid at it's absolute best. A SHOULDER MOUNTED CAMERA! No more annoying camera angles, you control it now! Aiming is made more realistic and slightly more difficult, and the physics system is slightly less exaggerated (But still big fun). Though maintaining your camo index can be frustrating at times, it all levels out. The combat system is second to none in any stealth action game, the shot placement system is slightly more refined (Example: pistol shots are no longer instant kills if you shoot the enemy in the left chest, while rifle shots often are because they can pierce the enemies body armor) but it still applies to you. Also, you are forced to treat your own injuries, procure your own food and weapons, and be able to sneak by enemies or risk facing an entire squad while controlling one man with limited ammo. In other words, big fun! Good enough to make any stealth-action lover drool.
Graphics: Second only to Shadow of the Colossus. Realistic, but not overly, violent, but not excessively, and it has fanservice. But it is not all blood, guts, boobs, and trees. The graphics really do have moments of sheer beauty that you could expect out of a Metroid Prime title, and it also has great cinematic cutscenes and is surprisingly low in graphical glitches. The downside is that the sprites lack variety.
Plotline: It is Metal Gear Solid. As far as M rated games go, it is second to none.
Music: Though you don't often hear music, being busy sneaking around, when you do hear it, it is either intense, beautiful, or corny.
Difficulty: The easy difficulty is perfect to get adjusted to the game, the hard difficulty is perfect for a challenge, the extreme and European Extreme difficulties are perfect for anyone who wants to prove that he has cajones.
Overall: Okay, so it isn't exactly THE best game you will ever play, but it is certainly up there on the top ten. The plot does get hokey at times, but it is several things. Some of the action is over the top, and some people may get mad that you are not allowed to kill certain characters. Also, people who lack patience will find the game impossible because they won't take time to hide themselves and get a drop on their opponents. But, all-in-all, it is a game you should play before dying.
Final rating: 9/10
