Excerpts from the field notes of Raul James Freegraf, NSA approved Mentor and Instructional Advisor, regarding LoQuinn "The Graveler" Sumert.

R. J. Freegraf
Department of Education and Training
Denver, CO----- MAR. 17

Subject (alias "The Graveler") requested transference from sanctioned NSA training facilities, instead opting for a more natural approach citing 'interference' as hampering his efforts. Apparently the upper levels seem to think the same and so here we are.

INITIAL SYNOPSIS: "The Graveler", male, appears to be in his late teens / early twenties. Outward appearance and dress style seems to follow a more flamboyant vein than most. What's more he remains silent, and appears to constantly be staring at me. The goggles make it impossible to determine where his eyes are looking. Charles mentioned something about how reserved he can be but I feel it's far more than that, he's appraising me. Probing me for weakness, for reason to find himself a replacement. Having gone from Photon to an IA must have seemed disappointing. We'll see if he can respect the strict regiment I have in store...

FIELD NOTES: Upon his request we have found an abandoned quarry, now being allocated under Federal Law ETPP07325* as NSA property giving us full authoritative power of it's use. Charles should be pleased that subject has agreed to perform at his full height now that there is no potential for collateral damage...

...Subject shows significantly more control over naturally occurring mineral formations than previously expected. This control seems to be defined by a more intense amount of finesse rather than brute strength. He is able to maintain control through even complicated commands, showing no visible signs of strain, however breaks into a sweat and becomes short of breath when exceeding what appears to be the standard boundary of mass (roughly 1/2 ton of material). Strain appears to be mostly mental, his body recovers very quickly. Additionally he tends to gesture as he exerts control over his element, this doesn't appear to be a needed rather is more of a practice used to more readily focus his mind. Possibly a form of tapping into the subconscious power of 'willing' one's body to move.

-Psychological note- Subject appears to 'communicate' with the mineral formations, often during more strenuous exercises when attempting to break his control he'll actually mumble encouragements to the stones under his breath. Further evaluation will be needed before I can rule out any form of MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder)...

((*Evolved Training and Practice Protection - Legitimizes NSA claims for land and property for use in the training and practicing of Evolved powers. This is in order to allow the development of Supers and their powers in a safe protected environment.))

Charles has asked me to step up the intensity of The Graveler's training in preparation of additional assignments through the NSA. As always I must say I enjoy putting these youth through their paces. However even with all the training I can't help but consider the possibility that I'm simply weaponizing the gifts they already posses. A thousand years ago they'd have been Gods and now they are the tools by which we keep our civilizations in tact. As Charles knows I've spent many years with these 'gifted' children. There are times I think we go to far by training as well as we do. Then again, the world we put them in requires that they be dangerous. Quite the quandary.

Charles has also requested a synopsis of my training regimen. It can be found concluding this report.

FIELD NOTES: Subject still appears to be hesitant to demonstrate his full control regarding the destructive aspects of his powers despite his promises to free himself up. What little he has said (yes, he's finally talking) seems to refer more to a state of mind. He doesn't 'feel the need' to harness these aspects of his power. Whether that means he can't due to psychological limitations or simply a conflict of interest has yet to be determined but I hope to have everything sorted out in due time. I should expect that the proper use of mental and physical strain should yield the right results. The problem with that obviously is timing. Making sure that the last barriers of his inhibitions break under our terms and not his.

TRAINING SYNOPSIS (as requested by Department head): All training sessions begin with a one half hour of meditation and mental focusing exercises. Directly following focus exercises are levitation finesse and 'shaping' (carving or otherwise mounding formations to match a drawn example) to help increase mental endurance. Usually this represents the first block of training and is usually continued until exhaustion and is rewarded with a break. My schedule for the second block deals more with the maximum output of direct force in controlled bursts. This in my professional opinion represents what should be the core focus of our training. The direct force aspects of his powers encompass all the destructive aspects as well as his primary mental load. In effect his mind, his powers, are much like a weight lifter. Or that is what my observations have led me to believe.

"You aren't listening to what I'm saying. Do it again, and this time do it right." The words cut over the dull rumble of stone. "AGAIN!" Raul shouted to make it perfectly clear he wasn't going to accept the lack of effort his pupil was putting forth.

LoQuinn gave a grunt of annoyance as he released several large boulders that were formed into a vaguely human shape. They were practicing the combination of different techniques, something that LoQuinn could sum up in one word, torture. The rocks slammed into the quarry bed, tossing up dust. The only person it was affecting was LoQuinn, Mr. Freegraf had had the foresight of bringing a painters breather mask.

"How the hell am I supposed to do it right if you don't tell me how I should be doing it?" LoQuinn shot back.

"It's not up to me to hold your hand every step of the way. These are your powers, you control them. Act like it already. Again!"

LoQuinn bit back several scathing retorts. Instead using the frustration he felt towards his trainer as a muse. After a few moments the stones rose once more, pulling together into a patchwork form. The ground on one another, merging in places and shifting as like molded to like. In a sense it was the complete opposite of what he'd been doing all along. Joining together mineral structures rather than splitting them was as much an exercise in willpower as it was an exercise in creativity.

"Good, now hone it down. More. Come on Picasso, quit dicking around." Raul had decided some time ago that playful chiding was the best course for encouragement. He kept things from being actively abusive but a little bit of lash always tended to garner the best results. LoQuinn didn't have to like him, he just had to improve. The stone took on some familiar features; legs, arms, a defined head. As the face was formed several attributes prompted Mr. Freegraf to comment once more.

"Real funny Picasso. Explain to my why that form has a pair of buttocks on it's forehead."

"Artistic license. I thought it was more fitting of the subject." LoQuinn said with a smirk as he admired his to-scale rendition of Mr. Freegraf. It was obvious, which was totally a step in the right direction.

"Cute." The older man replied flatly seeming to have missed out on the joke. "It's good to know that you'll have a fall back career in novelty sculpting when you get bounced out of the NSA. Now make a**-face move."

The smirk bled from the Graveler's face, in part due to what had just been implied but also because the task he was being charged with was effectively two fold. He imagined himself as the stone man and flooded his power into the form. Shifting his joints slowly with ponderous intent he began to move. Raul was saying something but it fell on deaf ears. He was the stone. The rise and fall of his horizon told him that he was moving. It was an odd sensation to have no sense of anything but the sight he was given.

Violent shaking snapped him back followed by a loud crashing of stone. A wave of nausea hit him and LoQuinn doubled up and rolled onto his side spilling what had been breakfast onto the ground. It was Raul, the man had rushed to his side. LoQuinn realized he was lying face up on his back. It was really about all he had time to notice before his vision blurred tunneling into darkness.

"Hey, hey! Stay with me. Damnit."

"His vitals are normal." The words seemed to pull him away from the deep darkness that was everywhere. It was the darkness that came from total unconsciousness, void. LoQuinn didn't have to open his eyes to know more or less where he was. His throat hurt, and the steady electronic beep of his pulse was a metronome that kept screaming 'hospital'.

"However his CAT scans came back with signs of elevated activity in both his frontal and specific sections of his sensory lobes. This isn't out of the ordinary for most kinetics but if you look at this scan we took when he came in over here compared to over here it's a pretty stark difference."

There was an audible click. They had some sort of computer station set up. However the fact that they discussed kinetics so openly made it somewhat obvious this probably wasn't a general hospital. It would make sense if the NSA had their own facilities, or perhaps they simply had their own physicians.

"So what do these colors mean exactly?"

"The colors on the screen represent brain activity. These blue regions are inactive. The initial scans showed little to no activity anywhere but the Parietal lobe, effectively he came in brain dead. We were going to call him as a DOA."

"Wait so the Parietal lobe is this red thing here?"

"Yes. However it shouldn't be showing this level of activity. It's used for processing of sensory input, and sensory discrimination. Making sure that a smell is a smell and not a taste. Or realizing that your arm belongs to you."

There was a pause, as if a whole slew of new questions were just waiting to be asked. The one LoQuinn himself was willing to break his possum act for would have been to find out what exactly that meant. Instead a simpler, more practical one was addressed.

"So why isn't he brain dead now?"

"Thats a good question, we don't know. He just started showing regular vitals, his lungs started working on their own again. We took him off the ventilator, and ran another batch of tests."

Ah, that explained the sore throat. He'd had tubes jammed into his lungs. He wondered what else they'd hooked him up to, almost assuredly an IV. There was the click of the mouse again.

"What the hell?"

"Exactly. I'd say it wasn't possible except we did the scan twice. He's showing normal brain function again. He's sleeping still but we expect you should be able wake him whenever. We'll be keeping him overnight though to keep an eye on things."

"Alright, thanks Doc. I'll check on him in a little while.

LoQuinn waited until both men left the room before opening his eyes. Aside from the mild discomfort of the machinery he was tethered to he felt fairly well rested. The questioning voice didn't belong to Raul or Photon for that matter. In fact he was quite sure that he'd never heard that man's voice before. LoQuinn appraised the tubes coming out of his arm. Perhaps it was the lighting but he looked paler than normal.

CC:: Training Accident

Charles,

I'm sorry to say there's been an accident during one of our training sessions. LoQuinn aka "The Graveler" collapsed during a more complicated exercise. He was med-evaced to one of our facilities and showed little sign of brain activity. Shortly after arriving though he stabilized and he doesn't seem to be any worse for wear. I'm still running through cognitive tests to make sure he suffered no temporary or permanent damage. The details are pending in my report but I believe this to simply be another manifestation.

An observational note though, he seems paler than normal.
