Dory had now quite resigned herself to a life as one, alone. Not quite an old spinster as she had children, but still, who want a used and discarded mare with a terrible memory like herself? Things could be worse. She had her health, and when she did forgot about the fact that she'd had love for a while, life was as it should be. She watched the waves as she often did, standing with her hooves half sunk in the damp sand, eyes closing occasionally as a breeze blew salty air towards her.
A name tugged at the corner of her mind..Vas-u? What was that? Her nose wrinkled as she concentrated, thinking hard. A picture formed, a memory of a stallion and racing. That had been fun, she smiled, tail flicking. She wasn't completely lonely after all..though she had to admit to herself that the chance of seeing him again was probably slim. If she set out to actually find him, she was likely to forget what she was doing before her search took her too far. So she stood, in her favourite place, watching the seabirds wheel over the horizon.

The wind spiraled over the plains with a maddening force. Branches of trees were swaying and singing the tune of the storm to come. The sun however, was not completely washed out with gray clouds. It might not rain before late afternoon. It gave a certain black stallion, a desire to make the most of the time before the possible down pour. Vasu could easily spend his day being lazy, but this seemed too challenging to pass by. What could he do with his time though?
A tingling sense pulled through his veins as he picked up his hooves and darted against the wind. His mane danced wildly behind him, rushing to the side when the wind changed direction for a moment, only to push against him again. It felt unbelievably free to run against the wind. Vasu'Raj instinctively picked up his pace, running with a speed he hadn't known he could reach. His chin nodded to the beat of his hooves, as they raised from the ground, expelling him forward through the gusty day.
Where was he going? Did it matter? Only running seemed to be important at the moment. He felt he could run forever, and just might have. Till the sun peeked through the glum sky, and gave his eyes a good strain to adjust to the sudden brightness. His pace slowed as he squinted to see. A strange caw rose above him and he blinked. The sun took it's place back under the blanket of cloud. There in the sky, was a few strange birds, large birds. He had no idea where he was.

Dory turned from the rolling waves; though she loved the sight and sound of the sea, keeping her footing in the shifting sand was tiring and she moved to go stand on firmer ground.
She walked up the beach, towards where the sand started have tufts of hardy grass poke up from it, blinking as the dark blob that she had only glanced at started to form something familiar. Familiar shape. A Soquili. She got closer, her tail giving a little flick, and recognition slowly dawned as the patterns of swirls and spots became visible.
'Vasu?' she said, her voice almost unaudible because she was worried that it wasn't in fact him. If it was another Soquili, she really didnt want to look a fool.

A constant call from the birds rang through the air. They were quite loud. It was a pleasant change, but he imagined that too much of that noise could easily wreck ones nerves.
As he stood there, a faint voice tried to make it's way to his ears. One ear twitched, and for a second he thought he hadn't heard anything at all. Yet, his mind proccessed the sound more. Looking over, he saw his friend, Dory. It was his name in which she spoke. He realized he had heard what she said, it was just so faint that he almost didn't notice.
His face lit up with a smile. "Heeeey!" He remembered who she was, and more so, the race that they had. How perfect a time, to now find her and have a chance at another race! He was on fire, and was sure he could do better this time.
"How are you Dory?" he proceeded with friendly formalities. He wouldn't just burst out, asking her to race right away. He grinned, glad that she seemed to want to remember who he was. He had confidence that she would remember, even if in pieces at a time.

'Nice to see you as well,' Dory said, a happy smile on her face. It was good to see someone other than seabirds, or her familiar, Squishy, whilst she appreciated the vixen's company, it wasn't the same as seeing and talking to another Soquili.
'Did you get lost or something?' she asked, a small tilt to her head. She remembered the stallion, and the racing but she didn't quite remember that she'd invited him to come find her if he wanted. If she did, she probably wouldn't have believed that he'd come all this way to see her anyway. 'I'm good, thank you.' she added as a polite afterthought. 'You?'

Vasu let out a light chuckle. "No, I didn't get lost. Rather, I took to the wind aimlessly, and it brought me here." he grinned. The winds still pulled at his mane, threatening to still storm at any minute. He didn't care, he only wanted to run.
"Me, I couldn't be better. Although.." he smirked and raised his eyebrow as if thinking something could be better. He wanted to race of course, and already knew that. He wanted to see if Dory could think of a thing or two.
"..I guess I could..hmm, I dunno.."

'It did huh?' Dory would thank the wind, if it was possible, loneliness wasn't really her style. She liked people..she just didn't remember meeting them that often! Said wind tugged at the curled locks of her mane and she looked into it, eyes closing for a moment before turning and looking back at Vasu.
'Although?' her brow furrowed. Did he expect something from her? She wracked her poor memory, trying to recall what had happened when they first met. Had she promised him something? 'Race?' she spoke, before actually realising she had said the words out loud. 'You want to see if you can beat me?' her cropped tail gave a happy flick at the thought.

"Ha! A race is just what I need!" his front legs bounced from one side to the other anxiously. The sand pushed up into deep furrows as he did, making it harder with each push from side to side. Tricky stuff. He glared down at the sand, returning his legs beneath him. "I bet this stuff will slow me down. But I'm confident that won't hold me back!" he beamed at Dory.
He was obviously excited, and felt young at heart. Course...he was still pretty young.
Kicking a hoof at the sand pits his hooves had made beside him, he inspected it as best he could. A small obstacle to overcome.

Dory grinned back, reflecting the excitement that Vasu was showing. She looked at his hoof motions, noting how he sunk into the sand. She too sunk into the sand, after all she was just a grounded Soquili, and those weren't noted for being..well light. But this was her home, and she'd raced along the beach before. 'This isn't the best place to race.' she said. She could have not told him and slipped away to near the water where the sand was damp and easier to run along once the race started but that would be mean, and she simply wasnt.
'Down where the tide comes in, that's the best place.' she turned, moving down the dune back towards shore, lifting her hooves high until they got closer to where the sea was rushing in and out. 'We race from here to?' she glanced around, looking down the beach for a landmark to use.

Vasu started after her in a playful jolt, bounding to her side, then in front of her. He stopped short in front of her, gleaming over his shoulder at her.
"Let's start off with a short race, then we can go farther if we want to." he curved one hoof and dug a deep line in the sand before them. "We can start here...aaand.." he bounced away as he spoke. "..we can raaaace.....to....about......here." he said as he reached a far enough distance from her and stopped, drawing another deep line in the sand. The clod of sand he had produced flew from his hoof as he turned and sprinted back to her.
The sea salt air teased at his hair, making it clump around his face with bits of lose sand. He didn't care. He wasn't vein like his dad. His hair would be fine messy or clean.

Dory giggled, her tail giving one of its usual happy flicks as Vasu bounced to her and then in front of her. She was fine with having just a short race at first, that way she wouldn't lose it just because her memory decided to fail on her. She clipped up to the line, listening to the sharp sound that the damp sound made under her hooves. Her legs tingled, anticipation for the race ahead. She hoped to win, but losing to Vasu would be no hardship either. What she enjoyed most was the movement, the salty wind in her face.
There was the added bonus of the company as well, and she flicked a sidelong glance at the stallion, noticing for what she felt was the first time that he had blue eyes. Dory smiled at that. She liked blue after all. 'You want to start us or should I?' she asked, her gaze fixed ahead now, on the finish line a distance from them.

Above them the clouds began to roll over the sky. An erie glow emanated from everything, making the colors of the land seem more vibrant underneath the clouded day.
Vasu looked up once and then over to Dory. They would have to move soon, or their first race was going to be in the rain. He winked at her playfully. "I'll start. You ready Dory?" he flicked his tail as he righted himself firm in the sand, ready to bolt like lightning.
When he was sure that she was ready he took a deep breath. "Aaaand....." he paused, feeling the tense air between the two of them, anticipating the run. "GO!"
He dug into the sand, bouncing a few paces and then running, heading towards the short goal with great speed. His head danced back and forth, sending waves of curls behind him.

Dory had smelt the new damp scent to the air, different from the one that always came from the sea. She glanced up, frowning at the coming storm clouds. Well, so they ran in the rain! She was used to dashing along the damp sand, she would still beat him. Well maybe. She grinned, looking sidelong at the stallion, waiting for the 'go'.
At his question, she gave a short nod, looking ahead of them again, concentrating on the line once more, her legs starting to tremble as she waited to sprint off.
'Whoohoo!' she called, letting the noise out in a great whoosh, as she sprinted forwards, snapping at his heels, sand flying in the air behind her as she left the starting line. She galloped behind him, moving in his slipstream this time, waiting for the moment to inject some speed and try to over take him.
