What the hell is wrong with you? Sitting down and playing real music is the whole point of band. Marching band is just some freakish hybrid of military and music.

And gay =/= bad.

Sing it, Sista! I love band, and marching season is what I live for, so when contest season winds down, I get to start on bassoon again *blegh...*

However, I can see Koravin's point, too. I hesitate to say "real music," though, because some of the stuff I've seen for vibes in the last three years is like... flute, sax, trumpet, horn, and clarinet parts, all at once or in sections. To me, that qualifies as real music.

Search for "Fossil Ridge Panther Regiment" on youtube, and watch the shows for 06 ("Quintessence") and 07 ("The Raven"), you'll see what I mean.

I stopped enjoying concert band around my junior year of high school. It just got depressing to see how under appreciated concert band was, and it's not really much better in college. At least in marching band, people see my performances, hear my music, and are ALOT more appreciative.

Don't get me wrong, I love listening to classical music, and I go to the concert band performances, but it just doesn't give me (personally) the same satisfaction that marching band does.

I don't think "real music" is exactly a good term for concert band music. Plenty of marching bands do classically oriented shows. Does the fact that it's done by a marching band/drum and bugle corps mean that it's somehow inferior to concert band?

I love marching season SO much better that I do concert season. Maybe its just our band, IDK, but ours is so dull, almost the whole band agrees tht marching band is better than concert.
I like concert band though, its a time to challenge myself, and it makes me better at playing my instrument

QFT.

Also, it's rather peculiar. In marching band, I can chew someone out for talking excessively/doing something wrong/forgetting something/etc. and they'll do what I tell them, but in concert band I chew them out for similar reasons and they do what I order them to for a while, but five minutes or so later they've gone right back to doing it.

Maybe it's all that stored-up energy sitting and playing instead of moving around?

Haha, I know during concert band I always felt keyed-up, like I had all this energy but there was no outlet for it. A bad day in concert band felt so much longer than a bad day out on the field, I mean, at least you could walk off the field. Concert band, you're still stuck in the building!

Also, mistakes in concert band (that you correct) are less obvious than on the field. If you say "hey, it's a curve not a diagonal" someone remembers that. You say "hey, it's an F DOUBLE sharp..." it's a little more brainpower than remembering where to stand.

hm, i'd say that i love both equally. ((: marching is the bomb, and probably more fun.. but concert isn't that bad, either. depending on the songs, i would probably prefer concert music.. but i'd much rather march the concert music. >> lol.
and, they both pretty uch hrt my back equally xD so, that ties them up, too...

well you work on important stuff and read more demanding music, which is always necessary in order to prepare you for the next marching season. And lets face it, most high School marching Music, is reletively easy, and the show music is pretty much all you play, besides football games. But yes I enjoy marching highly drum corps more actually, but yeah , marching is fun i agree

lol, I love marching much more than concert band simply because I'm active. But, I can also blame marching season for the reason I'm so crappy at oboe now. XD

Concert Season is cool. I love the music we play.
But i Adore marching season.
I love staying after school and running our halftime
show right before a football game.

I love marching into the field and hearing the anouncer say
" And here they are! The Mighty Black and Gold Marching BAND!"

I love playing in the stands and dancing around, being crazy.
My favorite thing is challenging the band across the field with songs we play.

One game we played navarre i think.
Our band played Jump on it.
Then Navarre played Jump on it.
Then we played jump on it like SUPER fast!
Then we waited for navarre......
Then when they finally did play, they went 4 times slower.
And that just made the entire band laugh.

But the one thing about marching band that i absolutley LOVE

http://youtube.com/watch?v=lITEF0DPDJc

when my BD bought the DVD and the whole band was sitting on the floor
watching the beginning.
The screen was showing us making our final move to our Superman Set.

And we heard our impact point. ( at 01:23 if you watch the video )
Thats was what got us our Superior at Troy & at FBA
When I heard that amazing impact point, i was like. OMG i want to cry!
All of our Hard work paid off.

We are finally a Superior Band.
This year's Marching Season is the best.

NOTHING can ever replace it.
Nothing.... Ever...

While marching season is hilarious, fun, and full of good memories, I do enjoy concert band a lot.

I just don't really like it with our director; he spends two months rehearsing the first page of a four-page piece he'd like us to play at festival, then decides not to have us play it at the last minute because the last-minute full run-through was horrible. He can't get stuff done, and it irks me. However, he was pretty cool during marching season. :]
