Today i went with my little cousin to the 'lake' in the area, and we caught some fish. brought them home and put them in a spare 5 gallon. I'm guessing about 5 to 6 poecillia somethings and one small tilapia. (Didn't manage to throw them all back) All of them are an inch or less in size.
So now I ask of you, how many of you have ever randomly caught wild fish? What did you do with them? I'm keeping these for a week till my cousin goes back home, so she has her own little aquarium to take care of, but what should I do after that with them.

Well I go fishing and swimming in beaches so in my bucket there would be a couple of wild small fish now and than but I would end up releasing them. I kept one once in a bucket but after a week I brought the little guy back to his home. It's best to keep them from where they came from because well that's were they feel more at home smile

I've ALWAYS wanted to do that, but I'm not sure about how to take care of wild lake fish.

Awww, sweet, You're making me feel guilty now emo Lol, I'll see if they accept flakefood tonight. They look pretty healthy and relaxed, though they have yet to get used to th glass. It's 4 males and 3 females though, terrible combo XD.
It's really fun to catch wildfish, not that hard eighter, since they are always used to people coming around and trowing food at the ducks. They don't really fear the net. catching aquarium fish is harder XD
I'll see what I'll do with them in a week. Probably throw them back, but I wonder, think goldfish would try to eat them?

awwww no worries<3 Taking care of wildfish can be pretty difficult but just add some things you'd usually see in a lake to add some comfort. Just observe and if they feel like home keep them and if they don't than bring them back to the lake. Well it depends if the fish can fit into the goldfish's mouth than the goldfish might have a little snack... I've heard a goldfish eating a guppy before LOL Well good luck on the wild fish!

Heh, I've seen a goldfish eat a mollie. Granted they still hadn't reached their full mature size, but still, they were out of the fry stage. So i can believe that they'd eat guppies too.
As far as i can tell they are in love with the flake food, they go crazy for it. They don't seem to be too uncomfortable in the aquarium, only after a water change they seem to forget about the phenomenon 'glass'. They also love the little caves, and although the lake barely contains any water plants they love nibbling on the ones i put in the aquarium.
I'm not sure what species this is though, but it doesn't seem to be a guppy. Light gray/cream body and the males have yellowish/ brown speckles on their fins and often a yellow 'gonopodium'. Any ideas what they are?
I'm have half a mind to experiment with them, to see if they'd breed in captivity, and if they can be crossed with tame guppies. is this even a good idea?

I fed them peices of lettuce and random things bread crackers and stuff. They lived a through the summer then i let them go. Cause' It was hard to keep them. and my mom Bouht me some rosy reds and some actuall fish food for me. xDD
