Ok, this topic is quite simple. I'd like to know why you (yes, you!) like Eva.

What draws you to it enough to make you come onto an online site to discuss it? Do you relate to one of the characters? Or do you just like big (so called) mechs? Perhaps you're a fan of the artwork or you just like trying to figure out the deep and nicely twisted storyline?

Anyway, whatever your reason.. I want to read it. Make me a happy girl and post it! biggrin

I aim to please! (in more ways than one... heart domokun heart domokun heart )

Seriously though...I love stories that are well developed and Evangelion is definately a well developed story. I remember when a friend of mine got the first two DVDs of the series and was anxious to show it to me. I remember thinking, 'What's going to happen next?! I must know!' after watching those first few episodes.

Its a story that introduces you to great characters through comedy and humor and then captivates you when it turns to a more serious theme. After I watched it all the way through...I decided that it was, indeed, a crowning achievement in anime, and I have yet to find another anime that tops it.

Yes, I have to agree with everything you have said there. The only thing that differs from my reason is that when I was first introduced to Eva it was through the means of a TV channel. I was 13 years old and had never seen an 'adult' anime.. well.. I'd seen Astro Boy and Sailor Moon, let's put it that way. I'd never seen anything like it before and I think that's what the initial appeal was for me but yes, I most certainly did grow to love it for what it is after a few years, when I actually understood it on some level.

Evangelion first caught my ear. My friend was talking about it all the time and I always listened with a bit of interest. Then came my big break. Tonnami had a lineup of shows that they called "Giant Robot Week" where they showed as many giant robot shows as they could get their hands on. One of those shows was Neon Genesis Evangelion. I watched it more out of curiosity than intrest, but after seeing the "Massively Edited Toonami Version of" the first episode, I was hooked. Even with most of the best parts removed it kicked a**. I watched the second episode the next day and drooled over that as well.

My friend was so protective of her DVD's that I turned to the internet and dug up as much info on Evangelion as I could find. Everything from Angel names, pilot facts and names, common Eva terms, the pilot's psyches, and just about everything else I could find I drunk in and I wanted more. Finally, after almost a year of looking and searching, I got another big break. My friend came over for a get together and she brought the DVD's. I watched as many as I could and got even more into it.

In short, Evangelion is the best anime that I personally have ever seen. It IS anime. The massive and perplexing plot, the deep characters and themes, the action, humor and character development is all there. It stands out among anime even today. It gets you hooked with its frontal assault of simple action and humor, and then draws you under with its underlying themes and characters. Its something that most anime fans have seen throughout the world which allows you to talk about it to people everywhere. And lastly, the many unanswered questions leave you guessing and allow you to fill in the gaps with your own thoughts and ideas. And thats why I love it. It leaves room for you to expand on it. It leaves open areas for you to fill where some shows just give you all the answers. And lastly, it has characters that almost everyone can relate to in some way. And to me, that makes it great.

Simple

Yuri's friend eddie comes over. Friend eddie shows Yuri the bohemian rhapsody eva amv. Yuri goes "HOLY HELL I MUST SEE THIS"

but that wasn't the question, my bad, smack me with a tuna.

Hmmm what's not to like? Beautiful designed art, very awesome mechas, twisted shiz, an intelligent (mostly) fanbase, good story.

Uhm whats that farkin' apple jacks thing...

Eva, he likes it! wait no thats not right... ********, we eat what we like! THATS NOT IT

Eva, we just do it... hell no... oh well... idea... I... woosh. *stops now*

Actually, for me, it's a combination of what you suggested there.

I started out on a hunt for Eva when I was quite a bit younger.
As it goes, I saw a picture of Unit-02, became fixated with finding it. Then when I finally did, and that's how I fell in love with the art style.
Sooo, I got a manga, then pirated the Series on VCD, and I was screwed for life... er... obsessed fo lyfe. Yes.

I really have no real reason for being so taken with this series anymore, since it's been so long since I first saw it.
I think it's the fact that now I've actually found people to discuss it with for once.
As opposed to my Anti-Eva circle of friends.
There is actually things to talk about, and answers to be found now, so I suppose that's what drives me to come here and post.

I really enjoy a series or manga so much more when I can actually understand the characters.
As long as I'm interested by at least one of them, then I'm quite set.
Eva's storyline and characters were something that kept me thinking, and made me want to be more involved.
I thoroughly enjoyed the little subtlties they threw in, and all the symbolism.
It was different from what I was used to, and I loved the change.

Also, I've never bothered to try and relate myself to any characters before, however when it happens by accident, it almost seems like the character is relating to you.
That's what happened with Evangelion. I somehow found myself relating to a few of the characters and that made it much more personal for me.... or something like that.

Y...es... and that be it.

I almost gave my life story as it relates to Eva, and then I remembered the question is "Why do you still like it?"

Answer: Because I like the story and the characters. The characters feel like real people (I've commented before and I'll say again that I think Shinji has Asperger's Syndrome, and he seems like he'd fit right in my family as like a youngest brother). The story is interesting and there's a lot in it which you can discuss with other people.

Lol, wtf Yuri. I'll just nod and agree. heart

One thing I forgot to mention in my post, and the majority of you seem to agree, is the fact that it is so.. ugh, can't think of the word. Open ended? That'll do. Anyway, I believe that's why the series (can't speak for the manga) has such a dedicated fan based. It almost drives one to discuss what's going on because unless you're one of those freak people with a massive intellect, I think it's quite impossible to understand everything that's going on without some form of help from other media sources, discussion or multiple series views.

Thanks for all your replies!

all right, just remember, you asked.

I like Evangellion for a lot of reasons.

-big battles with lots of fighting and combat.
-I am a lot like Rei and my sister is a lot like Asuka, all though we have our moments when we tend to switch
-I feel like Shinji a lot of the time. Growing up I was the quiet, teased, and all that. Not so much now, I have been assimulated into geekdom.
-I like the plot, very complex
-(maybe) first non-americanized anime I ever got to see

-I know there are other reasons, I just can't think of them now.

simple, its a beautifal and amazing blend of philosophy, theology and psychology with enough of one own spin, or flare for interpratation that makes it nontextual.

I jsut reread that post... I'll just nod and smile as well...

I have a big huge a** rant to go on about 'understanding' how the character feels type thing I want to type, but I won't because I don't feel like pissing anyone off.

Well, like a few of you, I got into Eva through AMVs, mostly because they give an aspect or a little overview of series.

Eva has some outstanding qualities that you just don't see anymore in anime. The action is fluid and unique, the mecha designs and character models are detailed and smooth, and the symbolism is blatant and embedded throughout the series. But there's one main aspect about Eva that grabbed me and most of all of you guys too:

The character development is what made this my favorite series of all. All of the characters relate to real people because they all have serious flaws that they struggle with often. Like Langley said, I too found myself relating to certain characters and their situations as well.

Most anime these days have main characters, or characters in general, that are generally likeable, with few annoying flaws. One major example of this is Tenchi Masaki from Tenchi Muyo. He has almost no flaws, except the fact he can't or won't choose a girl. (I think I ranted about this already in EFH. Oh well wink ). When I showed my friends Eva, they kept asked me, "What the hell is wrong with the main character? He's so annoying like that!" But all I could say in Shinji's defense is "Well, that's more real that any other show I've seen."

And when I saw EoE and how most of the characters suffered horrible and agonizing deaths, I may not have cried or bawled but it was painful to watch the characters you have come to know and love bleed, scream, and get shot (not to mention become tang).

So, for the record, that is why I like Eva.

Mmmmmkay but I warned you, keep in mind I'm not clear headed right now so this may not seem nice. Keep in mind I love you all and am not trying to offend heart

It bugs the CRAP out of me when people say "I can relate to that character" or, "I understand how that character feels" because in all honesty you can't. Not most of the time. You haven't been in that situation, so you haven't a clue what its like. No one here has piloted a mech. To say "I understand how blah blah feels" is like "I know how it feels to pilot a mech and doodleblah blah." This may seem off, but its like when our social teacher had us learning about immigration. We had to taste vinegar water, and smell nasty old potatoes. This was to give us a feeling what it was like to travel on the immigration boats. I still don't know what it was like for them, I only know what yucky water tastes like, and what old tato's smell like. Granted, you can guess and say "Oh I bet he's scared, or upset" blah blah, but you don't know what its like to be them. You can empathize, but not relate.

sorry if that made no sense hah.

Ay.
Well, everyone can relate. Not TOTALLY, because that's impossible.
Asuka: is deadly - | ReverieFangirl | says:
but in certain aspects, you can.
Like being left alone and being betrayed, losing a loved one, being ignored, I can relate and understand all of that.
I can understand the pain of losing, and having your pride hurt. I know what it's like to have no choice but to succeed, and the pressure that goes along with that.
I know what it's like to be driven positively mad by failure.
Asuka: is deadly - | ReverieFangirl | says:
But I dont know what it's like to pilot an Eva, or to walk in on my mother's hanged body, or to be in love with someone or someone I can't have. etc

There's certain things that touch you, because youv'e been thru them, and you do know what those certain things are like and you know what it takes to get over them. (if you can)
And then there's the other things that you can only pity and empathize with because you'd never want to imagine what going thru those things could feel like, and you never want to have to go thru them yourself.

(Copied and pasted because I'm retarded)

And so I really think you can relate to certain experiences, but only to a slight extent.
Part of the characters role is to make you relate to them in just the slightest way.
That way it makes it easier to watch the series, and/or deal with certain things that come along.
