It was a warm afternoon, coming ever closer to spring the snow had all but melted, leaving the lands muddy in places and green in others. The young filly trotted out across the vast open plains, short green grass now covering its hills, along with tiny flowers of all colors. Uni tossed her little horn-adorned head, a light breeze catching in her bright orange mane. She ignored the muddy patches that were now splattered on her ivory coat, from a less than graceful leap into what she thought was solid ground.
Uni continued through the fields at her short prancing gait, until the mud had started to dry and itch, she could ignore it no longer. She set off insearch of the babbling brook she had heard not far off, at a bouncing canter, but it wasn't long before she heard the sound of hoofbeats along with the babbling brook.

Karma stared quietly into the water of the stream and watched as it gurgled over rocks and splashed the edges. Just a few days ago those same rocks had been coated by ice but now they were bare and damp. The ice had been beautiful, if cold, and he thought that the warmer weather was a poor exchange for the beauty of winter.
He stuck one hoof cautiously into the water and pulled it back out when the chill water wet his fur. It was like his mother had said, they had to wait for spring to go in the water. He shook off the remaining droplets and lifted his head to listen to the sound of approaching hooves.
"Hello." He gave a quiet greeting to the yet unseen stranger, wondering whether it was a sibling or maybe even one of the other foals in the area he had heard about.

As Uni cantered quietly in the soft earth, she heard the even quieter voice not far off. Now she knew where it was, having not known exactly where the hoofbeats were coming from, or if it was just her imagination. She turned and bounded towards the brook, scrambling over the small hill that lay between the brook and her. As she stood atop the hill, she finally saw him, a colt younger than her, who looked friendly enough, and he was very colorful.
"Hello." She said from her perch atop the hill, before launching herself down it, sliding in the soft green grass, and leaving a trail of turned up earth behind her. Coming to a stop not far from him.

Karma took a small step back when the filly started to slide, not knowing quite where she would stop. He looked her over then, eyes lingering on her horn and tail. He had been told that soquili like these existed but he hadn't ever met one before. "Hello," he repeated before moving onto his introduction. "My name is Karma. Who are you?" He thought that he might be forgetting something polite that his parents had told him to always do upon meeting a stranger but he would rather think about this new person rather than what he should do about her.
He watched her with a look of calm interest. He'd have to tell his siblings that he met someone like her.

Uni watched as his eyes darted to her horn and tail, which had happened before, she didn't know if Unicorns like her were really that rare. While he looked at her horn and tail, she quickly glanced at his wings and colorful markings. "Nice to meet you Karma, I am Uni." She said brightly, flicking her long, bony tail behind her, unlike most hairy tails, she had to be careful not to hit anything with her's because it would hurt her, and it also made it near useless at driving away flies.

He briefly considered whether she meant that her name was Uni or that she was a uni. He had thought that was what the horned soquili were called. She had told him Uni in response to his request for a name, though, so it was probably safest to assume that was what she wanted to be called.
"It's nice to meet you too, Uni," he replied automatically as his thoughts drew to a close. He looked back over the water for a moment. "It's too cold to swim."

"Oh I know, I fell into a stream the other day, it was so cold I could barely get out of there." She said with a glare at the stream. "I wonder why the water is so cold, when it is warm all around." She said, glancing back at Karma, flicking her tail behind her.

"Well... it's..." He looked into the water and the tiniest furrow appeared in his brow. "I don't know why it's like that." She had brought up a question he hadn't even considered. Why was the water colder than the air? Shouldn't they both be the same temperature? He resolved to ask his parents the next time he saw them.

"Well I suppose it is just one of those strange things, certainly nothing important." She said as she shook out her short mane, before pawing at the water to feel just how cold it was today. "But there are many other things to do now that spring is here, that don't involve swimming." She said, wondering what he wanted to do, since standing around and talking was hardly normal for little ones, and she much prefered running to talking.

Karma looked to his companion without understanding. Many more things to do with spring? What was so different about spring rather than winter? There would be more plants, yes... warmer weather. Still, life was life and he didn't see that it would be that different.
"What do people usually do in the spring?" He blinked as he asked the question. Maybe she did have something special, even if he didn't.

Being that it was only her first spring as well, having only come into this world in the middle of winter, she had no idea what people did during the spring.
"I don't know." She said with a shrug. "I suppose without the snow, it makes it easier to run, and there are more creatures out, and flowers, and grass, and more good food to eat." She added, as she tried to think of how it was different from winter besides the obvious. "I suppose most just find it nicer out in spring, since winter is so cold most just hide and stay warm."

"I didn't hide during the winter." He had only ever really known the winter. If he had been hiding all this time Karma didn't imagine his life would have been very interesting. A quick look about the area gave some truth to the other filly's words. There did seem to be more animals about now that it was getting warm.
"Maybe it's harder for smaller animals to stay warm when it's cold." That would explain why they disappeared but soquili didn't.

"I didn't hide either, I would have missed so much. But I still didn't see many Soquili, at least not as many as I do now." She said, as she watched a butterfly, fly past her head. All these new creatures were so interesting, she kept discovering new ones everyday. "Maybe some Soquili just don't like the cold. I didn't like it much at first, but I don't like being cooped up even more than I don't like the cold." She added.

"I didn't mind the cold." He put one hoof back into the chill water and drew it out when the water lapped at his fur. "And I don't mind it being warm." He paused for a minute and considered between the two options. "But I think I like the warmth a little better. It is easier to move without the snow." He remembered the huge snow drifts that had been almost taller than he had. Those were the days that he had just stuck close to his parents and hadn't gone anywhere.

"I don't mind the cold either, but it is much easier to move. I could barely see over some of those mounds of snow, and got stuck in a few." She said with a grin, staring at him before glancing back at the water. "I suppose the cold water will be a good thing, when it gets very hot." She added.
