The Bleak Barrens ArenaOriginally set up as an open air theater for performing arts, this old amphitheater was bought out and remodeled to serve as a seedy betting arena for various face-off games, small races, and (the most popular and promoted feature) brawlers. The stage and ground levels have been converted into a sand pit. The backstage houses props to be moved out or stored depending on what events are happening at the time. The ground level seats are roped off behind an iron-forged wall that comes to about waist high, so those lucky or unfortunate (depending on your view wink ) enough to get front row seats often crowd at the wall and cheer or jeer at the competitors. Balcony seats are reserved for big spenders and have also been set up with a few enclosed sections overlooking the sand pit where high stakes card games take place. Servers in gray clothing walk the stands offering refreshment while the bookies in gilded clothing search for the risk takers and those willing to wager their gold, scribing the bets in the leatherbound books. Rumours abound about the arena and its owners, the most common being that the lower levels contain more grisly events, but the doors are barred and guarded by men and women who seem to know their way around a blade. So what lies beneath this old amphitheater? Here's the dark of it all...

The Arena Basic Info
Once an open air theatre for the performing arts, this octagonal shaped structure has undergone several renovations since its purchase a few years ago. The sign on the front is printed in bold, charcoal lettering proudly announcing that you have arrived at the Bleak Barrens Arena. Below this is the arena logo, a blade point down piercing through a turning coin.
As you step to the main door your senses are assaulted by the smells of burning oil used to light the torches all along the stands, the aroma of food and winery drifting from the first floor kitchen, and the sounds of the cheering and jeering of the audience over the clamor in the sand pit. Occasionally one might catch the iron tang of blood on the air too as it's not uncommon for the brawlers to spill blood in their zeal, though the regular spectators know that at this level of the arena the fights are stopped before they reach a lethal point. Once you pay your coin at the door they will see you in. Perhaps you're hunting for a quick meal and entertainment? Perhaps you're looking to get in on the action yourself? Whatever it is that has drawn you here, the servers will tend to your needs...for a price, of course.

The Sand Pit
Formerly where the commoners would crowd when the theatre was open, the ground level has been filled with sand and the stage that once graced the grounds has been downsized to make room for the arena's events. The sand pit spans a circle 125ft in diameter. A four foot wall rings the outer edge of the sand pit separating spectator from competitor. Regulars to the arena know that several areas near where the old stage was have been rigged with trap doors and compartments that lead to the backstage area to allow for spectacular entrances and exits as well as contraptions to change things up by adding obstacles and platforms for various events. A small portion of the old stage remains along with a guarded entrance into the backstage area where other props, tools, and the like are stored for use by the stagehands. Along the outer wall stand six evenly spaced platforms from which the three judges and three referees keep an eye on the events to make sure things run smoothly.

The Stands Ground Level
For those wanting to be up close and personal with the action the ground level seats are recommended. At ground level spectators crowd in at the wall cheering on their favorites while jeering their competitors, and it's not uncommon for the spectators themselves to get rowdy and throw punches. Lighting at this level is provided by torches in sconces along the second level balcony as well as the arena lighting so it is generally a rather dim glow overall. The security at this level is more along the lines of a tavern bouncer with the exception of those guarding the passageways to the higher balcony levels. Spectators at ground level are able to go up to the first floor to go to the privy, place a bet with a bookie, or place an order with a server, but usually don't stay on the first floor any longer than needed. After all, they usually pay at least a little more than the first floor patrons in order to get up close and personal.
--
First Floor
Raised above the ground level by a wooden floor, this outer ring of the bottom level has been set up with tables and chairs where those looking for a bite to eat may sit and feast while they enjoy the show. Lighting is provided by dim globes of magical lighting placed strategically along the ceiling so as to provide plenty of light without being overwhelming. The ground level bookies and servers, those who are less experienced or lack seniority, are denoted by their emblems emblazoned in copper or bronze threading on the breast of their tunic and bustle around from table to table taking down the spectator's bets and ferrying orders to the kitchen. The first floor is perhaps only slightly less crowded than the ground level being that patrons from the ground level often come up to the first floor in order to place bets or order food. There are passageways at the north, south, east, and west areas which lead to outhouses outside for the men and the ladies far enough out to prevent any smells from drifting back into the arena, but still enclosed in the outer boundaries of the arena's grounds. Those wishing to go up to the balcony levels must present a pass to the security guards blocking the way to get by.
--
The Balconies Second Floor
Those wishing to escape the crowds of the floor level or who wish a different sort of entertainment can purchase a pass to the second floor balcony level. On this floor patrons can participate in various card games and other games of chance where they can test their luck. The area is well lit by its enchanted globes and the servers and bookies here are those of middling seniority as denoted by the silver threading for their emblems. Large, enchanted mirrors have been placed sporadically throughout the floor to provide a view of the events below for those who wish to keep an eye on the arena as they play their luck, or for those who wish to participate in the house bets on the events below. Finally, those who wish a more private setting for their card games or who wish to host a large party of people away from the crowd can rent one of the three V.I.P. rooms, all of which are enclosed with enchanted glass panels overseeing the arena for a spectacular view. Each VIP room comes with its own security guard who stands at the door and only admits those the buyer permits inside.
Third Floor
The cream of the arena crop, the third floor is where all of the highest of the high stakes games take place. The air often hangs thick with smoke from pipes, cigars, and the like creating a bluish-purple haze around the globes used for lighting. The servers and bookies on this level are only the best of the bunch marked clearly by their gold emblems, and the security is well trained to keep the peace and the atmosphere just as the patrons with the money desire it. For those who wish even more privacy there are a few lushly decorated V.I.P. rooms designed for a smaller, more personal setting unlike the larger rooms on the second floor. Like their larger counterparts, however, they provide a clear view of the arena and the glass here has been enchanted to double as a view screen for an even better view if the patrons so desire. Not only do the V.I.P. rooms here have their own security, but they may also have their own personal server and bookie as well.

The Wall Carving: An addition made by the new owner, this stone section of the backstage wall is about head high and carved in fanciful designs along the edge. The center depicts two warriors forever frozen in their fight in such a position that each is poised for a killing blow, but if either struck then they would suffer a great and crippling wound if not die. The inscription below the piece reads "Mea obviam ire est evinco, haud res rei devoveo". The translation, for those who know the language, reads "My enemy is vanquished no matter the sacrifice."

The Medic's Ward
From the Iridescent Realms RP: "They continued through one of the doors in the backroom down a larger corridor decked in lighter shades of gray, blue, silver, and white and well lit so as to provide a calming atmosphere. What had once been an open hall sectioned off into small, variable sized dressing rooms for the bulk of the cast of a play had been turned into a medical ward with partitions separating the sick beds and a larger area at the back for minor wounds. The staff members were easily picked out by their crisp, white dresses or shirts and slacks over which they wore a light gray apron and a deep blue tied sash. The apron was embroidered with that same sword through coin logo but backed by a red cross on a light sunburst of either white, silver, or gold which seemed to indicate rank. The medical ward seemed to have few patients for the moment with most of the smaller morning staff cleaning bed linens or tending to those with more serious wounds."
((Will be edited into a more descriptive format ASAP))
--
Wardrobe
From the Iridescent Realms RP: "As they step inside they find a squarish room about half the size or less of the medic's ward but with several doors leading off to smaller dressing rooms labeled for women on one side of the room and men on the other. Another set of double doors in the back are locked, likely the private dressing rooms. A few bolts of cloth and leathers are stacked in the corner of varying shades along with a shelf containing old costume props such as hats, belts, necklaces, and the like from the theater that have been kept for use. A rack to the other side of the cloth contains some pieces of clothing that have already been made such as various tunics, corsets, breeches, skirts, and the like that are kept ready for wear needing only a few minor alterations. On the other side of the room is a table set up against the wall with a mirror and several bottles and vials along its length, presumably various face and body paints where the gladiators can add to their appearance, fearsome or otherwise."

The Pit
Hidden from the general public beneath the sands of the arena lies an even darker game. Here mortality and the struggle to live is ever present like a dark shadow hanging on the air. There is certainly something darker about the pit itself, a noticeable difference from the moment one walks in through the heavily guarded and barred iron doors. The iron tang of blood is so strong on the air one can taste it and naked steel is a common sight. The crowd is bloodthirsty, waiting for the next spray of crimson that will mark victory or defeat. They can taste death on the air and like a vulture circling the battlefield they await with bated breath the moment one man breathes his last. The servers and bet takers here have a hardened gleam in their eye and often carry a blade or mace with which to fend off the unruly patrons, their emblems outlined in a dark gloomy gray. The lighting here is dim overall, but plenty to provide a clear look at the gruesome action. Several smaller rings are available for use, but the most popular and beloved attraction of the pit is the infamous Cage...
--
The Cage
The main attraction of the pit where the bloodiest matches take place, this is The Cage. 40ft in diameter, the cage is lined with titanium enhanced fencing and laced with patches of barbed wire and copper wiring to make things interesting. The cage is large enough for two human opponents to have plenty of room to brawl, but the expanded size means that inhuman opponents can also step in and get a piece of the action. The cage is built with a magically enhanced iron frame and the bolt on the door is made from pure adamantite making it nigh indestructible. Once you're in the cage, the only way out is to fight and survive. Weaponry and magic are allowed, but there are no protections against stray spells, blades, or bolts so injuries in the crowd are not uncommon, but then with the kind of bloodthirsty crowd that populates the pit, that's to be expected. In the Cage, anything is fair game...

Familiar Faces Arena PCs Devaena - The arena's owner, though most wouldn't know it. Devaena tends to walk with the crowd preferring to manage the arena by seeing for herself what's working and what isn't. She often poses as an arena official or a casual observer. There are many rumours floating about concerning the arena and it's owner and if both are really as sporting and well meaning as they appear at a glance. If directly confronted about it Dev won't deny owning the arena, though by the time she gets through speaking one might wonder if that's actually what they heard her say or not. For Devaena's full profile click [here]. Thanks to Katherdante for the awesome avvy edit! Felixie "Tempest" Farcliffe - One of the newer gladiators who has already earned her fame for her brash challenging of Bane. Upon her declaration as winner in that challenge, she gained quite a popular following among the arena regulars who disliked Bane, though there are many in the crowds who dislike her for just the same reasons. She carries a tetrahedron mace which appears far too large a weapon for her, but don't let her size fool you. Tempest is ready to bring on the storms. For full profile info click [here]. Burzurk - One of the arena regulars, though it's not for certain whether he's a gladiator or just a spectator. Whatever he is it seems he has free range of most if not all of the arena and the owner's approval. Burzurk sometimes wanders the stands and the balconies, but those truly in the know would tell you he is more oftentimes found around the Pit. Notable NPCs of the Arena Staff Members The Book Keepers (Bet Takers) - Also known as the bookies, these ladies and gentlemen prowl the crowds taking bets on whatever event is going on in the arena. They are distinguished by their velvetine tunics of slate blue worn over charcoal gray. Some take to wearing large, feathered caps in a matching shade. The left breast of the tunic is embroidered with the arena logo in varying colours. Those with a bronze or copper logo are called Coin Initiates. They are just beginning or still learning the ropes. A bet taker with a silver logo is known as a Silver Tongue. She has proven that she is a cut above the rest, but not quite distinguished herself enough to serve the best. A bookie whose logo is embroidered in gold is known as a High Roller. He has proven himself a top quality server who knows what to say to get the coins exchanging hands. Servers of this quality usually serve the third floor only and are often asked for by name by regulars. Finally there are the elusive and not widely known Gloom Merchants. These grim, cutthroat bet takers wear dark gray or black embroidery and serve exclusively in the Pit where it is said they have their own vicious ways of competing for the best customers. Known Bet Takers
The Servers - The servers are responsible for taking and filling orders for food, drink, and services. They mostly work with the kitchen staff taking down meal orders for the cooks to prepare. They wear tailored, long sleeved tunics of soft linen in the lower levels, or silks in the upper levels, in dark charcoal gray shade. They, too, distinguish themselves by the color of their embroidery much the same as bet takers, though their naming is less elaborate than that of the bookies. Bronze embroidery denotes a beginner level Waiter or Waitress. Silver indicates an intermediary Steward of Stewardess. Gold indicates a high ranked and well renowned Host or Hostess. The bleak, black embroidered servers of the Pits call themselves Studs or Sirens. Known Servers
Trystan - A handsome, young, dark-haired and blue eyed Waiter who's always ready with a charming smile and an eye for the ladies. He's always willing to sit and have a drink with a pretty woman, and he'll sometimes provide drinks on the house...so long as the boss doesn't find out.
] Ysolde - A fair and freckled red-headed Stewardess, Ysolde tends to help on the first floor as much as she does on the second. It usually doesn't take long to figure out why. Ysolde loves gossip and prides herself on being one of the first to know things. Though she tries to keep it a secret, any of the arena regulars who are looking for information will ask for Ysolde to get the latest gossip on the happenings in the arena. Ysolde, as a result, is one of the most well-tipped servers in the arena.
Arena Officials - The men and women who are judge and jury when it comes to who wins or loses in the arena, the arena officials are marked by their darkly hued cloaks embroidered with the emblem of a sword point down through a spinning golden coin. It's the official's jobs to break up fights that are getting out of hand in the sandpit as well as scouting for new blood for the arena. They are responsible for the sign-ups during the daytime when there are often few if any fights going on or when the gladiators are training. The officials have their own higher ranked sub-sects as well. Most officials are just that, but those who have proven themselves keen of eye and judgment are promoted to the ranks of Judge or Arbiter and preside over the fights. These men and women are trusted to be impartial, though there are rumours that sometimes they take orders from the owner on who rises and who falls. Known Arena Officials
Myrghin - A tall woman of medium build, Myrghin is most easily recognized by the twin scars which cross her otherwise pretty face. She has long brown hair that is most often pulled back into a looped ponytail and eyes of a dirty green shade. She generally wears a smile and seems to be of good humour, however when she gets serious her expression made more severe by the scars which give her a sort of sneering look about her.
Sashenka - A lean, blonde haired young man, Sashenka seems human at first glance. However for those with a keep eye for detail, his sharp nails and lizard-like green eyes stand out, and when the torch light catches the young official just so it glistens off the light spattering of scales dotting his skin. Sashenka doesn't make light of the fact he's not entirely human, but is known for making light of almost everything else. He enjoys a good laugh and is often found amongst the crowds of the first floor wherever the laughter is the loudest on his nights off.
The Medics - Forthcoming Known Medics
Selmah Semiramis aka Miss Semira - Forthcoming
The Backstage Staff aka Stagehands - Forthcoming Known Stagehands
Rivkah - Forthcoming
Krella - Forthcoming
The Gladiators The Ladies Brigida "Bone-Crusher" Vykran - An imposing woman of strong build, Brigida stands a towering 6'4" tall and weighs 232lbs. She is fair skinned with brilliant red hair often worn with two smaller braids plated to frame the sides of her face and the rest plated into a larger braid that falls to her lower back. A braid of leather circles her forehead and her eyes are a stunning shade of green. She is often seen decked in a loose linen shirt over which she wears a sleeveless, thigh-length leather tunic bordered in a strip of green and lightly embroidered with intricate spirals, lattices, matrixes, and knotwork designs around the hems. Her leather breeches are simple over heavy boots. A latticework torc of gold circles her neck matched by golden armlets in her arm. When not in the arena she often wears pelts of winter white fur like a cloak. When in the arena she is known for wearing the blueish woad paint over her face and arms.
Mesha "Mayhem" Basiyr - A lithe fighter often described by regulars as a viper in woman's clothing, Meysha is a dark fae of arena renown known for her rowdy victory parties and the mead named after her. She has a rich, dark complexion common to her kind with pointed ears, dark rose-gold eyes, and vibrant white hair by contrast. She tends to dress in red leathers with lots of gold jewelry accessories studded with matching rubies or red stones and almost always has her fan, cane, or both with her. She stands at a height of 5'7" and weighs roughly 125 lbs, but don't let her somewhat frail appearance (at least in comparison to the other arena fighters) fool you. They call her Mayhem for good reason...
Kali "Nyx" Natesh - A tribal fighter who fights with feet and hands as much as she does any weapon, Nyx stands just barely taller than Mesha at 5'8" with dark hair and eyes and weighs 145 lbs. She prefers natural clothing made from doe and buck skin or the tanned leather hides of animals and any jewelry she wears is made from braided leather, teeth, claws, and sometimes raw gemstones smoothed by the flow of a river. Barbarian she may seem with her tribal tattoos and her bamboo spears, but Nyx is frighteningly calm and precise as a fighter. She knows where to strike to inflict the most damage and arena regulars know that she is armed and dangerous, even without her weapons. Nyx often paints a stripe over her eyes to match her tattoos before entering the arena.
Juno "Fury" Kairos - As fleeting as the wind and yet as furious as a the gale of a raging store, Fury is the shortest of the female fighters standing at 5'5" and almost the lightest as well matching Mesha's weight of 125lbs. Arena regulars know her for her sky-blue skin and hair and the fact that wherever she goes, a breeze seems to follow in her wake. Fury is known for favoring short, light weapons that she can wield one of in each hand and she is particularly fond of her pair of silver sais wrapped in blue dyed leather along the hilt and dotted with small sapphires. Like the wind she is so fond of, Fury is often here and gone again, a mistress of stealth and able to often sneak up behind her opponent before they knew what hit them. It's often too late that they find the fury of a windstorm bearing down on them. The Men
Gryff "The Gryffon" Marduk - Forthcoming
Balin "Bane" Sannath - Vain and arrogant to a tee, Bane stands at average height and build for a man. However he is known in the arena as an imposing, terrifying demon of a man due to the unique platemail he wears that's been forged and enchanted to give him a hellborne visage. He is the gladiator the crowds love to hate, onstage and off, and is known for being a bully of the worst sort always taunting and jeering his opponents and merciless in victory.
Drake "Drago" Athan - Forthcoming
Brann "Sabre" Gurvyr - A plain looking man who could easily blend into the crowds of the lower levels, Sabre stands at just below average height at 5'9" and weighs 143lbs. He is dark of hair but with calm blue eyes and an often grim expression when outside of the arena and left to his thoughts. Lean and wiry by comparison to the other arena fighters Sabre prefers to rely on speed and stealth to strike quickly and often so he can wear his opponents down. Arena regulars gave him the name Sabre after one of the cats of the eastern plains stating that he fights like a cat playing with its prey, and Sabre does seem to enjoy playing with his opponents.
