Mr Sharpton

PostPosted: Sun Feb 24, 2008 4:15 pm

This is one of my favorite SK stories. Although it wasn't as powerful in my opinion as the Mist or 1408, it was equally good to read, as all SK tends to be. I liked the detail as always, but the Ideas behind it were not as strong as they could have been. I enjoyed the ideas but that just weren't powerful. That was the main problem. Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions? If you who have read this story may have already guessed, I draw my user name from the book.

First off, The Mist and 1408 can't even come close to Everything's Eventual, but I've already made it clear that I'm not a huge fan of those two.

Next, you really should make your avatar look like Mr. Sharpton. Suit and tie, the works. That's have a better effect.

Finally, I enjoyed this story as well. I like the concept of start and end the week broke. I liked the suicide inducing letters. I liked Dinky's Day Board. It was a really cool idea for s story, and nicely executed.

Why didn't you find the Mist or 1408 good? You have me intrigued. The Mist and 1408 both scarred the hell out of me. I couldn't look out my window when I finished the Mist, because it had been really foggy lately. 1408 just intrested me. Most of my short stories are based around Demons so the thought of a Demon possessed Hotel room strung my fancy.

At one point I did have the entire Romani set in black. I am working to get it again.

I was disappointed with him killing Mr. Sharpton. It seemed.... wrong? I can't understand why he would do that. Yes, I too like the concept of ending and starting the week broke. Although I couldn't have just tossed money down the storm drain. I would have used it in some way. Dink'ys Day board was a good Idea. On another note, I had my friend read the story, then I sent him a PM tittled Dinky Mail. I was hoping to scare him. I also can't understand why he would deviant and quit his new life style. But then again, the though of killing acctually strikes me as appeasing right now, so I wouldn't know.

The Mist seemed overlong and, frankly, boring. I guess prehistoric monsters randomly appearing in a mysterious mist don't creep me out...at all. It's not just that it isn't realistic, because I can go for the sci-fi and fantasy quite a bit. It just seems cheap. This isn't a shot at King (I wouldn't think of it) but I do admit that he has some works that I did not enjoy. The whole thing was like "Zomg crazy monsters outside. Ok, we're gonna sit around for a while being boring, then go out and try to get away from this.... Now that we're in a potentially interesting situation, here's the ending you were hoping would come 50 pages ago. Hope you enjoyed..."

1408 I have fewer negative things to say about. I don't dislike it, I just found it somewhat unremarkable. The ending where he set himself on fire to get out was cool. Parts of it were cool. but I saw it as being on a level with most of King's other stories. No greater, no worse. And my opinion is that people are crazy about both of them because of the movie hype. 1408 I did see, after reading it, and I thought it was a pretty good one, that they did a good job with it, but my opinion still stands about the story.

To give you an idea, some stories I really did like were Quitters Inc., Survivor Type, Little Sisters of Eluria, Autopsy Room Four, Battleground, Children of the Corn, The Mangler, Word processor of the Gods, Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, and You Know They Got a Hell of a Band.

There are more but the list would get too long and those are the ones that really stood out for me. My favorite collection is Night Shift, certainly.

As for the actual topic here, and Mr Sharpton....I didn't have a strong reaction to him killing Sharpton. I see how it worked. The guy made him into something bad without him really realizing it until the end, and he felt he was saving other people like him from Sharpton, I think.

I do have to say the Mist was long but, in the end, it was powerful to me. I really can't explain why. And I was hoping for it to be more Unholy, not prehistoric. But I also think alternate dimensional beings could be a better term. The main character is just using Prehistoric to describe size and likeness.

I like how in the movie he did the whole, "Go to Hell." Thing with the firebomb. However I was disappointed in the phone call. I expected it to scare me as much as it did in the story. Negative time. The whole, "is this the real reality thing" in the movie was bull s**t. Uncalled for deviation from the story.

I enjoyed Autopsy Room Four, but that is a discussion best suited for the other short story forum I have. I haven't read the last one, but I shall. I want to read Cell, and Children of the Corn. I heard the movie sucked but the books are always better.

From my current stand point, I wouldn't mind working for one Mr. Sharpton. I want to kill right now, and I don't know why.

Meh, killing is easier said than done, but I won't digress further into that.

Children of the Corn rates high on the creepiness factor. I've seen only a small bit of the movie and it didn't look as ominous as the story.

Cell was good except for the ending, which wasn't very satisfying.

And King is usually straight-forward when it comes to other-dimensional stuff. He tends to just come right out and say he's talking about stuff from other worlds. Even in From a Buick 8 he does that, but I wasn't crazy about that one, either.

I didn't have much of a problem with the movie. They did what they had to to put in enough content for a feature-length film and I didn't feel they really left anything out. It is one of the three King movies I've seen. The other two are Carrie and The Secret Window, which I saw before I was a King Fan, but still thought was decent.

Then I guess I should read Children of the Corn then.

That's rather disappointing. I liked the idea.

Hmm... Well I still think that there is room for variation and this might just be the one. The thing that leads me to believe that, it Project Arrowhead. It seemed to be... Ominous. And to me it seemed to foreshadow extra-dimensional creatures. Just the mysteriousness of it and how the Mist formed over in that area. And how the two men hung themselves after a day.

I know they did what they needed to to make it full length. But the whole trippy, is this a dream or not, thing was in my opinion, uncalled for.

I agree on the dream issue. That was dumb and cliche. There was never a question of whether it was real or not and it seemed like an insult to suggest it, let alone try to trick you into believing it. Bastards...

As for Autopsy Room four. I loved it. The detail made me sick. I already don't like needled but having a six inch metal spike driven into your chest cavity... *shiver*... That's a no-no. I find it entertaining that such a down to earth, uncensored happening such as an erection would give away his dead persona.

the whole short story book Everything's Eventual was incredibly grood. (good and great) I think lunch at the gotham cafe was up there as was 1408, Autopsy room 4, everythings eventuall, little sisters of eluria, and everything else in the book.
