I try very hard to not make changes on myself that clearly are suited for more european features/tones/hair and are unflattering to me.

but reading this article my friend sent me I began to wonder,

What's everyone's view on making changes on them self to be more eurocentric
Black girls going blonde

tbh I think it 90/100 times looks awful when a african american goes blonde, there are very rare cases where it looks good(to me)

I read the article and i feel its really more in the person If you Style mean rockin Blond Hair then by all means do you but if you do it to be more eurocentric, that person has no love for the culture which is no love for self

but if its for style........ like I said do you but the only female Ive seen who rocks it right is heart Keyshia Cole heart

and I am not a fan of the skittle bag hair styles

thats my piece

I didn't read the article...but I will say this. If you want to do something, go for it. It shouldn't matter what other people believe or think or say. It's your life and you have to live it the way you want. If you're going to be put down but racial stereotypes and the norms of society, then you won't be able to live your life the way you want to. I actually straightened my hair once and though it didn't look bad, I got more put downs than I did complements and the complements didn't even come from my family! Everyone excepts you to have braids or a crew cut or afro just because you're black, but race shouldn't determine a persons wants.

Quoted from the article:
Quote:
"My hair is really, really dark and I wanted to do something different," said Nina Harrison, sophomore undecided major. "If people do it to look more Eurocentric it is a subconscious thing because we are trained to conform to the white idea of beauty. People do no think 'I want to appear more Eurocentric.' There are not a lot of options that look natural for black girls."

Harrison suggests that Black girls who go blond to keep up with the latest look model their hair after singer and actress Beyoncé.

The first part:
I agree with that. I do think that aspect is there more than black people would care to admit or realize.

The second part: So you're trying to look like Bey. And just what standard does Bey have to meet?

Blantly put, I think it's an attempt to resemble whites. What are the odds that a standard is shoved down our throats since we came out the womb and you want it just "for a change?" And what gets me is when people say that SOME not all people do these things to conform to whiteness. I can understand when people deny it for themselves but to say that there is noone with self hatred issues at all any where is just naive.

Sure, these girls have every right to do what they want, but if they want to color their hair in a way that doesn't compliment their features and live with low self-esteem, it's their problem.

I think some people do it just to see how it looks and for a temporary change. I don't think it means that the girls are trying to be more white. And yes, most black females do not look good with blond hair.
