I do a lot of lurking in the GCD and SF forums, and often find myself rolling my eyes at some of the people there. Especially the elitists with their "Newbs don't deserve free clothes", "I ignore people who wear ________", and "I've been here longer than you so I'm better than you" threads. I think to myself, "Thank God, I'm not like that."
Then, the other day, we had a new member join a group I RP with. He's nice enough, but his RP skills are...not so great. His grammar and spelling are perfectly fine. It's his interaction and description skills that are lacking. And I quickly found myself being annoyed whenever I saw him and secretly hoping he'd lose interest.
Which led me to the terrible realization that....I am like that. I'm a snob when it comes to RPing. If I meet you for the first time in an RP, and you're bad at it, I have a very hard time getting past that initial impression and getting to know the you behind the character.
Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever been going along your merry way, thinking you're just fine and dandy when, suddenly, a situation jumps us and slaps you in the face and you realize that you're every bit as biased and prejudiced as those you've been feeling superior to? How did you handle it? Did you accept the realization right way? Or try to deny it? And, even more importantly, how has the realization changed you? Or has it changed you at all?

The only problem is that I am not prejudiced except in very selective ways. Not agaisnt a group of people.
Mind you, this person of whom you speak may not be versed in English very well as he/she may be a foreigner and does not speak English. (I am in contact with two young people, brother and sister, from Germany and neither speaks English well. They are trying)
I do wish that Gaia has a language translator. It would make things a WHOLE lot easier. Especially since there will be more people from more countries discovering this site in the future.
I come from Neopia (Neopets website) and had been there for over 6 years. They HAVE a translator.
Ya know, with this in mind, I think we should bring this to the forums as a proposal with a poll so that we can then take it up with the Admin.
What do you all think?

No it has not and you are a bad person who should feel ashamed for thinking that way.
I kid.
I prefer to stick with my biased belief that I am superior to all meat creatures and allow my mind to shield my with denial and paranoid delusions whenever I think I might be wrong.

Ya know, with this in mind, I think we should bring this to the forums as a proposal with a poll so that we can then take it up with the Admin. What do you all think? I'm pretty sure he's American. And, like I said, his spelling and punctuation is perfectly fine. It was just that...he's a terrible RPer. I'd say my prejudice, in this case, is pretty select too. I mean, if he hadn't tried to RP with us, and I had just met him OOC, I wouldn't feel that way. I don't care if your "speech" online is a little awkward, and I don't even necessarily care if you're a bad RPer. I have a few friends that I consider bad RPers, but I don't have a problem with them. I think, what it comes down to, is having a really hard time getting past my first impression of someone. If I mostly know you outside of an RP and become friends that way and later discover that you're a bad RPer, I don't have a problem. The problem is when my very first impression of someone is that they're a really bad at RPing, then I have a hard time moving past that first impression. Hmmm...how does the translator on Neopia work? Does it translate from any language to any language? Or just from other languages to English?

No one wants to admit that sort of thing about themselves. I know Duntada Man was being humorous, but he had a point. It's so much easier to stay in your safe little "I'm fine and dandy" zone that to take that hard look at yourself.

Yeah, excessive chat-speak can be highly annoying. As long as it's easily understandable it's not too bad. But when you have to take the time to actually interpret it...then it gets annoying.

I agree. These kids use the text messaging WAY too much too! Ya need to comminucate properly in the real world if you wanna get anywhere. These kids are gonna have a really tough time when reality slams them right in the face. My biggest prejudice... People who use prejudice and hatred as an excuse to hard or kill others. Politics and religion as excuses are also among my biggest pet peeves.

I have something to say... I don't know if you remember when I used to wear my sunflower and a few accesories... but anyway. When I use that avatar sometimes guys started to talk to me and we chat and everithing is nice... until they ask the question, "are you gay?" and they ask because they are gay. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not homophobic. I'm allways try to be openminded with everything. But it's really hard when they start to say "OMG you are so hot, do you have a picture to show me?"....
One time a 15 years old kid started to be that way.
And the worst part is that I really really like that AVI crying

Not sure if Gaia's up to the coding of something like that yet, but it's definitely something to suggest for the future.
