(For those not in the know, a MUD is a text-based roleplaying server, like these fancy mmorpgs only keeping text based and so with a far greater scope, all at the mere cost of having to use your imagination a bit more)
I've been looking around for a while now, but I can't seem to find any decent MUD that has a steampunk setting, or even scope for a steampunk character and adventures etc., and so I was wondering if either
1. Anyone else here has looked, and if so, whether they were successful. or 2. If anyone knows how to set up a MUD, so that we might fashion out own!

There once was a MUSH that was pretty steamy, but that was a couple of years ago and it eventually shut down because everybody moved on to flashy, yet dumb 3D games... crying
I would have thought Iron Realms would have developed something more steamy by now, but alas, instead they're now jumping on the graphical MMORPG bandwagon, too.
If you ever think about making your own MUD (be assured you'd have at least one dedicated player and spare time developer xp ), consider going for a PBBG instead - they only require a simple webserver (cheap), are by far easier to develop and maintain, make it easier for people to play thanks to the simple browser integration (but, depending on the server technology, you'd still have the choice of developing your own client instead), and they are very versatile. You could make a "real" MUD with text only, add simple graphics for avatars and items or even go the way of graphical text adventures, adding fully fledged scene images to go with your textual descriptions.
