So, we've all had other ships outside of Avatar. Perhaps it was in something like Harry Potter, or some other such work of fiction. I've noticed that people tend to like the same pairing reincarnated, and similarly, HATE the same pairing.
SO. My question is, what ship types do you like/dislike, and how does that affect your shipping POVs in Avatar?
There are typically 2 ships that I ship, with some discrepancies.
1. Friends that tease/fight with each other. (Often this is SarcasticGirl/SillyGuy.) Examples: Ron/Hermione (HP), Shikamaru/Ino (Naruto... shut up -_-).
2. Crushes/love stemming from childhood crushes, AKA Puppy Love Evolved. A variant on this is 'crush on first sight evolving into love'. Basically the same as PLE, but just within a shorter time span. Examples: Kaylee/Simon (Firefly), Hinata/Naruto (Naruto... SHUT UP.)
My FAVOURITE ships often mix the two. (Example... SMELLERSHOT! *falls over*) My favourite ship in Avatar is actually Smellershot, but we never get to SEE them so it's kinda like... yeah. Tokka takes over. I really hope they're alive.
So, can we guess what my favourite ships are, based on these two types?
...No, really, guess. NO C'MON GUESS.
Okay that's enough. -__-;
Now for the ships I DON'T like... you know, there really isn't any particular ship-type I detest. Usually I just hate ships because they make no sense when figuring in OTHER long-standing ships in the story.
An example: Harry/Hermione. PISSED ME OFF TO NO END. I was a Ron/Hermione shipper from the start, because, hey, IT WAS FCKING WRITTEN IN. That was THE ship in HP.
So, I guess if I had to stereotype that ship...
A ship that was mashed together with no basis in the story.
So! How about you? (Examples from other shows would be good, to get the point across.)
Side-topic: Do you think shipping types has to do with how WE want our relationships to go? Explain. (I sure as hell do; I love guys who I can squabble with.)

I really, really hate the love-at-first-sight sort of thing. Which is what Kataang is to me(from Aang's side, anyway), so that's one reason why I don't ship that pairing.
As for shipping types that I ship... It varies, really. I tend to ship fanon over canon because canon ships bore me to no end. There have been few canon ships that I have been a fan of: TearxLuke(Tales of the Abyss), and... um... Actually, I think that's pretty much it. neutral
Majority of the pairings that I like, however, are the enemy/enemy, or the love/hate and rivalry types. Basically the ones with a lot of UST, angst, and all that other jazz. To name a few specifics: Hector/Lyn (Fire Emblem) Hermione/Draco (Harry Potter... Yeah, what. I shipped these two. Still do. Kind of) Nel/Albel (Star Ocean: TtEoT) Zuko/Katara (These two have nearly taken over my life, no joke)
Like you said, there are some exceptions. Cloud/Tifa (FFVII) will always have that special place in my heart since it was the first pairing I've ever fangirled over.
Many people have commented on the ships that I like since they hardly ever make sense. I could care less, really. That's what fanfiction, fanart, and imagination are there for.

Hmm, it's hard to say. I do seem to have a liking for the angsty ships. You know, those that obviously like each other, but everything in the series keeps them apart, or makes things difficult for them. "Doomed from the start" sort of thing. The more obstacles in the way, the better. Bonus points if it's actually impossible for them to end up together.
Examples:
Tobias/Rachel (Animorphs). Tobias is stuck in the body of a hawk, and Rachel is human. Tobias can become human for two hours at a time, but there's still a huge strain on the relationship.
Pyrus/Zera (Shadow Raiders/War Planets). They're from two races that are completely incompatible, and can't even really touch without hurting each other. They're also both royalty on their own respective planets, and so will probably need to marry one of their own people. Especially Pyrus, since the moral of his people kinda sucks right now due to his planet having been destroyed.
Terazuma/Wakaba (Yami no Matsuei). Terazuma turns into a gigantic monster when touched by women. Though this causes a lot of humour in the series, it could also cause lots of angst.
Andreios/Danica (Kiesha'ra). She marries someone else for political reasons, trying to stop a war. Plus it's later discovered that Andreios is from a different race that doesn't breed well with others. They're genetically compatible, but magic would make any children of theirs COMPLETELY CRAZY.
Sol/Rush (My own original story). Sol goes deaf, and Rush goes blind, which makes it really difficult for them to communicate, at least at first. This actually ends up strengthening their relationship in the end, though, so it doesn't quite count.
There aren't really any pairings in Avatar that fit that type, though. Hm... Zutara comes close, but it's not quite there. All the other couples I mentioned canonly like each other, while there hasn't been enough Zutara hints for me to consider it canon. Now, if we get some canon evidence that they like each other, but then Zuko gets all "I have to marry someone from the Fire nation if I become Fire Lord", THEN they'll certainly qualify. Which is why I like them in fanon. But so far in canon, they just don't have that spark for me.

Interesting. *nodnod*
So, how do you think your typical ship relates your own relationships?
(lol I shipped Hermione/Draco too. xDD)

Butterfly Nebula Now for the ships I DON'T like... you know, there really isn't any particular ship-type I detest. Y'know, this explains a lot between us right here. Yes, I actually shipped Harry/Hermione. Why? I wanted to see something different. We all knew Ron/Hermione was going to happen since about Book 3. It was there, I knew it was going to happen, but I wanted something I thought was interesting. There was some basis in the middle of the series but that got overshadowed by book 6 and 7. But my Harry Potter shipping was a little mixed and I even had ratings for who I supported with Harry. Harry x Ginny - 95% (supported since the second book) (would've supported it since the first had I known it was going to be a continuation) Harry x Hermione - 90% Harry x Luna - 80% Harry x Tonks - 70% Harry x Cho - 50% (dubbed it a crush-at-best the moment it happened) Favorite crack couple that a friend mentioned: Ron x Giant Squid xd I'm trying to avoid being one of those "falls in love with the first ___ they see" supporters. I remember hearing a lot of people complain about that. I've even tried to write stories that avoid that tactic. Let's see if I can remember my Digimon shippings because that was the first series I ever seriously shipped. Taiora - Tai x Sora (confirmed lose crying ) Takari - Takeru (TK) x Hikari (Kari) Taruki - Takato x Ruki (Rika) Yamato (Matt) x Mimi) (And lots of other various little shippings but only to the point of "yeah, I like this better than that other one.") Negima: (Yeah, this is challenging) Negi x Yue Negi x Eva Negi x Anya (Negi's childhood friend) Konoka x Setsuna And since we're on the topic of Naruto.... (even though I have very few shippings from the series) Shikamaru x Temari And I'm stuck between Naruto x Hinata or Naruto x Sakura (which is slowly growing on me) And trust me, I could go on with a lot of other shippings including some from original stories but I think I will stop there.

NOOOO SHIKAMARUxTEMARI! *HulkSmash* Dx Do... not... like... at all... No, y'know what, I'm not *that* far into the series yet. I've read spoilers and such of "Ohoho, they keep helping each other out and Naruto thinks they're on a date, ohoho." I'll make up my mind once I've seen more. At this point (episode 102? Dx So much for my vow of not becoming a Narutard... I'm even planning a Tsunade cosplay...) I'm a ShikaIno fan though.
For Negima, I'm a Negi/Nodoka fan. Although, I am a fan of Negi/Yue too. Dx ...You know what, I'm probably a bigger fan of Negi/Yue than I am of Negi/Nodoka, but I started liking Negi/Nodoka first, so it's hard to deviate from that path. >.> I DON'T like Asuna/Negi. I'm like, "NYUUUU ******** YOU." (It weirds me out slightly when I refer to you AND your namesake. Do you feel weird being paired off? xD)
For Digimon, I was a harcore TK/Kari shipper, and I was a Tai/Sora shipper too. (It frightens me that I was a shipper at the age of 7. What the ********. -_-)
Hm... lemme think... What other shows/animes do you have ships in? xDDD
It's weird; on some we agree, on others we are polar. I guess there's no absolutes, eh?
(On the note of HP ships, mine are: Lupin/Tonks, Hermione/Ron, and on a crack note Hermione/Draco. Harry could go ******** a porcupine for all I care. xD But, yeah, Lupin/Tonks is my big one, they're my two favourite characters and they're adorable together... AND THEY BOTH DIED DAMNIT. I thought before I read the book, "What's the worst death that could happen?" My answer: Tonks dying and leaving Remus alone AGAIN. When I read that she was pregnant, I was like, "s**t, she's gonna die." It's a good thing that he died too, in a way. Dx)

I'm pretty leniant with my Potter ships, even more so than with my Avatar ships. I like the canon ships well enough. I used to like Harry/Hermione, but that was back when I'd only read book one. After that they really struck me as having a sibling-like relationship, so it was awkward to pair them up.
Anything else I'll usually liked if it was well written. There was a really good Draco/Hermione fic that got me liking them. (Macbeth, by Cyropi) It's a really complex couple, though, so it's hard to find some actual GOOD fics about them.
I like Grindeldore, but mostly in fanart. I find that in fanfics everyone just kinda keeps using the same ideas for them, especially since it became canon. But in fanart they're very pretty.

Ahhhh. The tl;dr devours souls. But I actually did read it, really.
1. Love/Hate Phoenix/Edgeworth (Phoenix Wright), RoyEd (FMA), SasuNaru (Naruto), KakaSaku (Naruto), Jeile/Airi (MeruPuri), Draco/Harry (Harry Potter), KyoTohru (Furuba), Sasame/Himeno (Pretear), and I think you get the point. I can go on, if you really care, because I've got lots more. Oh, and Zutara, of course.
s**t, I can't think of any other theme that I adamantly ship. O.o
Wow. Even though it may look like it, I'm not your stereotypical ship-everything-with-a-dong-together yaoi fan. I swear! Its just because I've read really, really good fanfiction for those that have kindof converted me. D:
I dislike ships that suck. So it really depends.

I like canon. It's not because it's there, stated by the creators, and I simply accept it. I do remember going "that slut, she's no good for him" or something along those lines (but don't remember with who XD), and going 'meh' at several canon couples. It's because I enjoy watching the relation develop. I really dislike grasping at straws for evidence, and I like seeing things happen. After that, Iām open to pretty much anything, as long as I like the characters and their interaction.
My favorite ships are as follow:
Guts/Caska(Berserk)- My current OTP. Their relationship grew slowly (as in, 12 manga volumes slow), starting from dislike on her part, indifferent on his, and then growing to respect. It was like an answer to my prayersā¦until everything went to hell, and now theyāre breaking my heart. Orson/Bree(Desperate Housewives)- Two psychos together. I just love the nonsense of it all. Bree is my favorite character, and I just wanted her to be happy with something Aladdin/Jasmin(Aladdin)- I donāt have any specific comment on this one. Thereās plenty of them, what with three movies and an animated series. Sokka/Toph (No duh)- Not technically canon, but quite frankly I donāt have to grasp at straws to form a romantic connection between them. Ron/Hermione(Harry Potter)- I shipped these two since day one, mostly because at that time I was more enthusiast about love/hate relationships. Horohoro/Tamao(Shaman King)- This was my OTP for the longest time. The one pairing on the list that isn't canon at all. However, thereās enough space to speculate. Technically, she marries someone else, but that was just mentioned in an interview and I can always pretend she cheats one her husband : ) The rest are canon/oc, because Iām a fantard :B

Butterfly Nebula Hm... lemme think... What other shows/animes do you have ships in? xDDD It's weird; on some we agree, on others we are polar. I guess there's no absolutes, eh? Gah, I've been trying to think of other ships that I was serious about but I can't think of very many. Love Hina - Keitaro x Motoko. Naru did appeal to me for most of the series but eventually I was rooting for Motoko. Going back to Negima, Asuna also did appeal to me a little at the beginning but as we learned more about other characters that support kinda dropped. Eventually I did come to the idea of "I kinda hope Ken Akamatsu doesn't do another 'Keitaro x Naru' pairing in this story," which is why my support went to other characters. Pokemon - Ash x Misty (yeah, BIG surprise) I think I should say for my Harry x Tonks support, I knew it wasn't going to happen but it seemed like a better idea to me than Cho. I'm not that far either on Naruto. I'm only up to whatever episode is on TV and the English manga. The manga is now at the 3 year jump while on TV we've reached the dreaded fillers (I've heard horror stories about them). Yeah, that's all the other big shippings I can really think of right now. If I was back home with my full manga collection I could get a better idea.

I do that when I find other Firefly fans. sweatdrop Jeez, for the romantic that I am, I'm not much of a shipper. I guess it depends on the ship, and the relationship, etc. I usually don't really like "The two enemies fall in love and do it passionately" thing. I mean, it's one thing when the two are at least on the same side and don't get along, but when they're total enemies? Not my thing. Oh, and I hate "They've known each other since they were babies, so they're soul-mates!" thing. Like, Ginger and Darren from "As told by Ginger," or any other middle-school-based show. If I knew a guy since I was a baby, I'd think of him more as a brother than a lover. *shivers* But I'm pretty lenient when it comes to "type" of shipping.

I tend to like ships that don't seem to be there...but yet ARE. Subtle ships. Like Ichiruki in Bleach, Taang in Avatar, Kagura x Sesshomaru in Inuyasha, Royai in FMA...
I also like the sweet near-canons that are just too perfect. XD;; Like Sukka in Avatar, Cher x Hubb in Wolf's Rain, and Inuyasha x Kikyo in Inuyasha, Yuki x Shuichi from Gravitation.

My other-wordly shippings: Harry/Hermione (I don't know, I never liked Ginny. Is this why I love Zutara so much? Because of my dislike of Mai?) Inuyasha/Kikyo (Why is this on my list? I've never read it! I guess I've observed it, and its so obvious. To me, at least.) Mario/Peach (Hehe, videogames!) Luigi/Daisy (Hehe, more videogames! Although they've never been expressed, you pretty much put two and two together.) Husky/Nana (These guys are from +Anima, a manga I love to death. They have a love/hate relationship going on. They argue; she clings to him for comfort and he doesn't pull away. She wants to marry into a rich family; OH LOOK HE'S A PRINCE! Hell, he MAKES HER A NECKLACE AND PASSES IT OFF AS NOTHING.) Senri/Rose (Another pairing from +Anima. Senri's a big guy that doesn't speak much, and yet is unbarably cute. Almost like a big teddy bear. Rose is bubbly and instantly takes a liking to Senri. They balance!)
So, I guess I like some pairings that are obvious, but if I really love something, I'll hang onto it (Zutara and Harry/Hermione is my case in point.)
