There are certain tracks that I can't say an awful lot on due to issues I have with confidentiality in my writing, but I want to talk about what I feel I can regarding the imagery I get with different types of music. However, there are certain artists that you may have never heard of - unless you've heard of any artists from an organisation called New World Music (which have an international website).

To begin with, I get a lot of imagery from bands such as Nightwish.
Here's one example of what this thread is about. I don't want people just posting what they imagine though, I want the imagery presented by myself and other individuals to actually be discussed. Obviously it's easier if you've heard of the band/artist and have heard the songs/scores in question.

NIGHTWISH - Bless the Child
This song conjures up images of a castle high in the mountains (not of the stereotypical depiction of Dracula's castle, but a castle used by a vampire nonetheless). The castle has tall turrets and spires that resemble the buildings in Prague - Church of Our Lady Before Tyn. Imagine the spires and stone work of this castl being of that kind of design.

Additionally, imagine the castle at night with a brisk wind blowing through the mountains. The moon is out and the sky is clear with only a few streaky clouds passing by. The vampire lord stands atop one of the towers, long wavy blonde hair blowing in the wind. He's dressed in the finest quality noble's clothing - including dark green velvet.

Nightwish is love. heart

I usually find a track and put it on loop when I'm writing a scene. It's really helpful to keep the right mood going. Sometimes I even put together my own soundtracks for my stories, though they never see the light of day.

Oh come on, there must be some people here who get nice fantasy imagery from different types of music!

Celtic music of various sorts is usually what inspires me when I'm writing fantasy stuff. I especially like compilation sampler CDs because not all the songs are quite the same style.

Windam Hill is a good label for that sort of thing.

I often use Celtic sounding music if I am thinking along the lines of Elves, or religious buildings like Cathedrals (the music has to have the chanting in it of course). I'm sure you can gather what type I mean.

This CD is one that I own.

You know, the only imagery I get whenever I hear one of Nightwish's songs is imagery from Castlevania. I wonder if I'm THAT odd or what, he-he... mrgreen
Just for the record, I haven't heard many of their songs, just the ones you can find on my profile, in my multimedia section. 3nodding

Bless the Child, as mentioned before, makes me think of a vampire castle high in the mountains, so I'm not that different really. Their faster songs have a tendency to make me think of aerial combat.

Tell ya what, I'm gonna see if I can find that song on the playlist project and listen to it if available. I'll even put it on my list if I like it. 3nodding

Play.com or Amazon. Buy their CDs if you like more of the music.
If you ever give me your Yahoo ID I'll add you and can even send them to you over the messenger!

Hey, projectplaylist is pretty sweet! I'd never heard of it before. But I sure have a list in my profile now. Thanks, hypno! 3nodding

I've populated it with some of the stuff I like to listen to while I'm writing and a few other random things besides. There's even a few period pieces in there.

I have a superb CD called "Keeper of the Holy Grain" by Richard Shulman and Samuel Welsh; it's "new age" Christian mood music with a strong set of roots in the ancient pagan traditions of avalon and the Grail. If you google "RichHeart Music" you'll find them online; they have some great stuff. It serves me well for "thoughtful writing" moments.

For angst and violence I like a combo of the Drop-Kick Murphys and Dead Can Dance. smile

I don't buy music these days Mel, sorry. I might start to do that again someday though.
BTW, my ID for yahoo is "hypnocrown_fs" and if anyone wants to add me, feel free. Just make sure to tell me in the message that you know me from Gaia or I'll probably delete yer request. sweatdrop
The problem with the messenger is that I don't always use it. I'm not much of a messenger kinda guy, he-he. rolleyes

I don't use messengers much anymore. I am always signed into MSN when I am online, but I am almost always set to offline because I don't usually want to be bugged.

I buy music for the inspiration it gives me really.

There's a track called Sanctus by Karl Jenkins that's really quite foreboding in the way it sounds. The lyrics are all sung in Latin.

Guess what Mel? I finally heard that Bless the Child song but I'm not sure if I should include it on my list. Still debating it... mrgreen

I hear ya! I do that sometimes too, he-he.

Hmm, I much rather buy games for inspiration though. Especially good ones cuz they include great music tracks. Castlevania, for example, has Michiru Yamane as a composer; need I say more? wink

Sanctus, huh? I'll search for it another day...
